TIN ARMOR—COLUMBUS, OHIO

Columbus punk-tinged indie-rockers Tin Armor headline the first night of Lobsterfest 2k11. The band is full of toe-tapping, head bopping melodies accompanied by expert harmonies by multi-talented vocalist/pianist/guitarist Matt Umland. They’re guaranteed to have you swaying and dancing to both ballads and upbeat tunes respectively. Expect to hear material from their latest album, rumored to be released sometime this summer.

SCUBADOG—ATHENS, OHIO

Lobsterfest veterans Scubadog are a folksy indie-rock group from right here in Athens, Ohio. It’s hard not to move your feet to Scubadog’s hard-hitting chords and strong, melodic vocals. The band is known for their hilarious banter and antics--such as passing out bacon and beef jerky at shows--and their undeniably catchy songs. Always energetic and always fun, expect to be laughing, singing and shaking your hips during this set.

THE KYLE SOWASHES—COLUMBUS, OHIO

Power-pop band The Kyle Sowashes are also Lobsterfest veterans hailing from Columbus, Ohio. The Sowashes are well- known in Athens, and it is not uncommon for fans to request their favorites during the set. With the Sowashes always sporting smiles, expect to hear infectious, feel-good, danceable tunes.

STOMP THE CONDOR—COLUMBUS, OHIO

Opening Lobsterfest 2k11 will be post-ska and pop-punk band Stomp the Condor from Columbus and Athens, Ohio. Often rowdy, energetic and jorts-clad, these dudes will keep the energy level high with slammed piano keys layered with upbeat guitar and falsetto cries. Members of Stomp the Condor also play in bands Free Sample Tuesday and Mindfish.

FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 10 p.m. @ THE UNION—FREE!

CHILD BITE—DETROIT, MICHIGAN

Headlining Day 2 of Lobsterfest is the Detroit-based Child Bite. Led by vocalist Shawn Knight, whose pitch range gives the audiences a sense of adrenaline mixed with paranoia, Child Bite’s experimental sound and instrumental explorations create an art-rock sound with a garage-pop edge. The band has been together since 2005, with their latest release The Living Breathing Organ from summer 2010.

NARROW & THE BRIGHTS—COLUMBUS, OHIO

Narrow & the Brights are a post-punk group from Columbus, OH, formed by guitarist/vocalist Tim Race and drummer Zack Inscho. Both Race and Inscho played together in Athens’ based Russenorsk and Manor Animals while attending Ohio University. The group exhibits the diversity of its hometown, fielding influences from punk, folk, metal and noise put together to form their art rock, post- punk sound.

EVOLVE—CINCINNATI, OHIO

Lobsterfest veteran Evolve is a one-man psychedelic hip-hop band from Cincinnati, Ohio. Evolve, a.k.a. Colin Murray, offers a wide range of electronic sound and vocal mixes. His layering of song fragments and beats gives him an original sound and edge to the hip-hop world.

VAGRANT BEAT—ATHENS, OHIO

Vagrant Beat is a psychedelic post-punk/emo group from right here in Athens. This four-piece act can pack a mean punch, bringing great energy and enthusiasm to their audience. They will have you up and raging in no time.

NURSER—ATHENS, OHIO

Nurser is one of Athens’ newest bands. The trio has a progressive sound with a mysterious dark side. Guitarist and vocalist Shane Riley shows off his wild side with his savage shredding while bassist Sam Fink plucks away at audiences’ heartstrings and drummer Keenan Huq bangs it out.

SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 12 p.m. @ SOUTH BEACH—FREE!

ASOBI SEKSU—BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

Headlining Lobsterfest is the New York-based Asobi Seksu. The duo, consisting of Yuki Chikudate and James Hanna, creates music for dreams. With the use of hazy instrumentation and electronic effects, it’s not difficult to hear roots of , while Chikudate’s voice adds a sweeter sense. Asobi Seksu has been featured on many television shows, including the British version of “Skins.” They released their fifth studio album, Fluorescence, in February of this year.

PRUSSIA—DETROIT, MICHIGAN

Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, is co-headliner Prussia. Their version of indie-rock, comparable to Wolf Parade or MGMT, is as enticing as it is bizarre. The bouncy, nearly goofy vocals support many different sounds--some electronic beats, others acoustic. Their songs display a sense of humor with a psychedelic feel, which will certainly entice show-goers in one way or another. Four for Attention, their latest EP, was released in January and is for sale on iTunes.

BROTHERTIGER—ATHENS, OHIO

South Beach will transform into a dance club Saturday for Athens’ own Brothertiger. Brothertiger, a.k.a. John Jagos, will bring just himself and his box, creating danceable electronic music that not only Athens folk have grown to love, but also people all over the world. He is an Internet sensation and with six EPs under his belt, he’s bound to go only up from here.

SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 12 p.m. @ SOUTH BEACH—FREE!

SHE BEARS—COLUMBUS, OHIO

Born in Athens and currently living in Columbus, the beloved She Bears will make another return for this year’s Lobsterfest. We just can’t get enough of ‘em. After a tour down to SXSW, and a performance at the Nelsonville Music Festival, the band is still ready to please Athens with alternative indie-rock like nobody’s business.

WHALE ZOMBIE—ATHENS, OHIO

Progressive rockers and Athens’ own Whale Zombie has been taking the music scene by storm, playing nearly every weekend this year. They have a strong Athens following and rightly so. Their music is explosive at times, and alluring always, mostly just through instrumentation. With new record label Dark Circles underway, it’s clear they’re destined for bigger and better things.

IN SILENT MOVIES—COLUMBUS, OHIO

In Silent Movies formed in Athens, and were an indie staple to see around town. Though they’re currently delving into the Columbus music scene, they occasionally make their way back to Athens. Lucky for us, they’re able to make time for Lobsterfest. Their honest lyrics and dynamic instrumentation provides an all-around endearing show.

BRIDESMAID—COLUMBUS, OHIO

Bridesmaid, a Columbus-based stoner metal band, is a newcomer to Lobsterfest. Expect a heavy, slow sound from the band’s two bases mixed with a politically charged message. While this is the band’s first time playing Lobsterfest, they are no stranger to Athens, having just played here in early May.

BLITHE FIELD—ATHENS, OHIO

Lobsterfest veteran Blithe Field is the moniker of Spencer Radcliffe. He is an Athens-based electronica ensemble with an intriguing blend of haunting beats and soothing sounds, incorporating samples from all over the place, including Joanna Newsom’s “Peach, Plum, Pear.”
