Wild Dear Chamber Member, April 2021 Spring is here and that means it’s time for the City and its community members to ramp up their spring cleaning efforts. In a coordinated effort between Westland's Public Service and Neighbor - hood Services departments, Westland kicked off the launch of a comprehensive clean-up program to address trash which has accumulated and created blight across the City. The program, called "Operation Clean Sweep" will divide the city up into five sections and employees from both departments will pick up trash along the major and local roads, city parks and any vacant commercial properties. As a result of the suspension of the 18th District Courts Work Program due to Covid-19, and recent high winds my office has received a high volume of complaints. With unseasonable mild weather, our DPS and Neighborhood Service professionals have some extra capacity before normal spring maintenance begins. I am also asking that all of our local business owners do their part to ensure their properties are clear of trash and debris. On Thursday, March 25 the United States Senate voted to extend the Paycheck Protection Program through May 31 and provide an addition 30-day period for the Small Business Administration to process applications that are still pending. If your business is in need of financial assistance, please visit www.sba.gov for more information on this program and other financial resources available to support your business. Once again I am asking Westland businesses to become a partner on a common goal of introducing Westland's young adults to the workforce. The "Wild About Youth Works!" Program aims to prepare Westland's young adults for the workforce by teaching them the virtue of a strong work ethic, good customer service skills and financial respon - sibility. If you are hiring for your business and would like to become a partner or would like more information, please call the Economic Development Director, Aubrey Berman at (734)793-3900. The City’s events team is currently working on planning its premier annual event, Blues, Brews and BBQ which is slated to take place on August 6 and 7. As in years past, thousands will be treated to some of the Detroit Blues Society’s most popular acts, amazing barbeque and a wide variety of Michigan’s most popular micro-brews and back by popular demand, a firework celebration on Saturday evening. Proceeds from this event are donated back to area non-profits and community groups who volunteer to help plan, organize and operate the event. As you determine what your annual community outreach activities and sponsorships will be, we humbly as that you consider becoming a part of this fun and charitable event. As a sponsor, your business will be promoted in a comprehensive marketing strategy that will be featured on radio, TV and creative print advertisements and signage before and during the event. For more information on sponsorship opportunities, please contact the Westland Chamber of Commerce at (734)326- 7222. In case of event cancellation, sponsorship dollars will either be refunded or credited for next year’s event. We knew we wanted to continue our tradition, but instead of going into stores we decided to do PSCU 12 Days of Tipping. Employees were encouraged to order carryout at a local eatery. To support the restaurants frontline staff, PSCU gave the employee $200 to be able to tip the waiter/waitress who handed them their food. BGya Steneiowr Paaysto rF Daamwn iSlyteb lWetoon rship Center Gateway Family Worship Center is a non-denominational church located on Cowan Rd in Westland. We are a small, multi-cultural and multi-generational congregation led by Matt & Dawn Stebleton and team. The majority of our mem - bers play a very active role in our church community and in serving the local community. It is often said of us, that we are the “biggest” small church around. Our main purpose is to please God by serving the passion of God’s heart, peo - ple. Loving Jesus is our priority and is evident in our worship, our message, our relationships and our culture. We believe that love looks like something. We en - courage our people to live the Christian life beyond lip service but also as active, involved and engaged in our church. We are known for this and have often been able to encourage other churches and ministries to follow our lead and adopt the same mindset towards community enrichment. We believe the church should serve and bless our city rather than looking for our city to serve us. We do this by offering Summer and Fall Enrichment Programs for all children where they express their creativity, get physically active and make life- long friends. We also offer a Youth Basketball program for young men to find mentors and experience teamwork while having fun and learning how to play basketball. Over the past few years, we have served over 300 children and youth through our en - richment programs and basketball camps. What makes us different is our active community involvement as a church. We believe the church operates best outside of the four walls. We were founded in 1997 and have been committed to our mission ever since. We participate in several com - munity groups, including our partnership with the Wayne-Westland Community Schools. We aim to identify needs striving to meet those needs and enrich our community through our involvement, our resources and our relationships. We are grateful to have several members of the Gateway family who actively participate in the life of the Church. In fact, many of our members lead the majority of our community programs and other ministries at Gateway. It is our love and support of one another and our belief in the power of “team” that helps us to labor together and love and care for each other well. The needs in our community are growing and we are looking forward to engaging other churches, organizations and busi - nesses in our community to work together to make positive change in the lives of those we are entrusted to serve. We are located at 34645 Cowan Rd in Westland and have gatherings on Sundays at 11am and mid-week services at 6:30pm on Wednesdays. We have men’s groups, women’s groups, and leadership classes. We offer weekly children and youth programs, which are led by qualified and experi - enced volunteers and teachers. We hope to meet with oth - ers in our community and make strong, impactful partnerships to advance and prosper our city together. Our website is www.gatewayfwc.org and we have a public Facebook page where we often post announcements about events and activities. The NNatiaotniaol Kniadln eKy iFdonunedya tFioon uofn Mdiachtiigoan: Foofc uMsinicg honig Haenalth in Westland The National Kidney of Michigan (NKFM) has a special and long-standing relationship with Westland. In an effort to reduce diabetes and high blood pressure, the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease, the NKFM offers a variety of nutrition education, physical activity, and chronic disease self-management programs in Westland schools, churches, and community locations. It has also been an active member of the Healthy Westland community coalition and helped to link people at risk for chronic disease to existing programs and resources. This is especially important in Westland, where 10.5% of adults have Type 2 diabetes, 33.6% have high blood pressure, and 38% are obese. In 2019, the NKFM received a 5-year Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), targeting the cities of Westland, Inkster and Wayne. The goal is to remove barriers to health improvement caused by structural factors that make it difficult to be active, eat healthy, and access quality health care. REACH grant projects include: • Joining the City of Westland to build bike lanes in the city, including participating in the upcoming Walk and Roll bike and pedestrian plan Steering Committee. • Working with the Norwayne Community Citizens Council, Wayne County Parks, and Friends of the Rouge to develop the Lower Rouge River Water Trail and Greenway in Venoy Dorsey Park, which would include two boat launches, trails, and other park amenities. • Holding a flu shot clinic at Westland’s Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church and creating public service announcements with West - land pastors to promote the flu vaccine. We will be working to encourage flu vaccination before next year’s flu season as well. • Partnering with the Wayne Westland Community School District to establish a Safe Routes to Schools Task Force • Supporting Westland’s Hope Clinic by funding technology to create a patient referral database • Supporting Farm to Early Childhood Education initiatives In the near future, The NKFM will also be encouraging COVID-19 vaccination by supporting vaccine confidence and access. Started in 1955, The NKFM is a with 105 employees. Our mission is to prevent kidney disease and to im - prove the quality of life for those who have it. With more than a million people in Michigan affected by kidney disease, we work to provide life-changing programs and services across the state. We provide the following evidence-based programs (now virtual), most of them at no cost: • patient services and support for those with kidney disease, including scholarships and an emergency fund • the CDC-certified Diabetes Prevention Program • Personal Action Toward Health (PATH) workshops on chronic disease prevention and management • physical activity, including EnhanceFitness® and A Matter of Balance • kids’ nutrition • kids camp for children with kidney disease (pre-pandemic) • healthy lifestyle programs for all ages Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious public health crisis in Michigan. Recently, the NKFM and the MDHHS announced their joint 5-year CKD Prevention Strategy, created to address chronic kidney disease in Michigan, especially among communities of color. Although much of it is preventable, CKD affects over one million Michiganders, many who don’t know it because they have few or no symptoms. Over 15,000 people in Michigan are on dialysis and more than 2,000 are waiting for a transplant. Government, health systems and private sources fund many of our pro - grams. In addition, we hold large events such as the Kidney Walk (see picture at left) at the Detroit Zoo and the Kidney in downtown Detroit, other kidney walks and golf outings throughout the state. Although we have physical offices in Ann Arbor, Detroit and Grand Rapids, most of our programs are now offered virtually and will be con - tinued online even after we return to in-person meetings. One of the ad - vantages of online programs is that they are accessible anywhere in the state, especially to people unable to drive or without transportation. For the past 13 years, Navigator — the nation’s leading non - profit evaluator — has recognized the NKFM with its highest rating of 4 stars for success in sound fiscal management. In addition, the NKFM earned a 2021 Guidestar Platinum Seal of Transparency. For more information, visit nkfm.org or call 800-482-1455.
