We identify the needs of the senior community and implement services and programs that encourage self-reliance, good health, education and community involvement. We advocate for seniors and increase citizens’ awareness of our efforts to meet these challenges.

Dear Patrons, As crocuses sprout up and daffodils bloom, spring is definitely in the air! We look forward to warmer weather and the return of some outdoor activities in April and May. Our new outdoor recreation area will officially open the beginning of May. We continue to assist seniors who need help and information regard- ing scheduling COVID-19 vaccinations. The Senior Center is not officially open to the public with the ex- ception of services by appointment, but we will keep you informed as to any updates in our policy. The new building expansion is coming along and the slab has been poured. During March and April the framing will get underway. The project is on budget and on schedule at the printing of this newsletter. With April, we celebrate Volunteer Month and share the article below from Old Colony Elder Services who we partner with through the RSVP program. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for programs or services that you might like us to offer in the future. Wishing you hope and renewal for the spring season, Carol Hamilton

Celebrating OCES Volunteers for their Heroic Efforts

April is National Volunteer Month, a time to celebrate the individuals who generously donate their time and effort to make a difference in the lives of so many. At Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), a private, non-profit organiza- tion, we honor more than 700 volunteers who are dedicated to providing essential services to older adults, individ- uals with disabilities and others throughout the 23 communities we serve. OCES volunteers are community mem- bers of all ages, ranging from retirees to employees of local businesses seeking outreach opportunities, to stu- dents and others. Our volunteers support a number of programs. For example, we have over 400 volunteers in our Nutrition Program delivering “Meals on Wheels” to homebound recipients on a daily basis. More than 60 volun- teers support our Money Management Program and help older adults and individuals with disabilities balance their checkbooks, reconcile bank statements and pay their bills on time. OCES is also fortunate to have more than 250 volunteers in the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Plymouth County, part of the AmeriCorps Sen- iors network, which is the federal agency for , service and civic engagement. These volunteers help local agencies such as Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Plymouth, the Brockton Public Schools Reading Program, South Shore Community Action Council, Food Banks, Veterans Services and others. Volunteers also serve on OCES’ Board of Directors and the RSVP Community Advisory Council. As with many nonprofit organizations, the need for volunteers is ongoing. OCES offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to match a volunteer’s interests. We also recruit volunteers for programs at other nonprofits, schools and organizations throughout Plymouth Coun- ty. For anyone who is 55 and older, OCES can provide information on RSVP of Plymouth County. Over the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about many new challenges, but OCES continues to adapt and safely serve the needs of our consumers and the communities in which we serve. All of OCES’ programs, from Nutrition (Meals on Wheels) and Home Care to Protective Services, remain in place and are operating. We are truly grateful for the heroic efforts of our volunteers as they continue to provide important services - such as daily meal deliver- ies and more - to older adults and individuals with disabilities to keep them safe and independent at home. A heartfelt “Thank You” to all volunteers for the important contributions you make in the community each and every day. For more information about volunteer opportunities throughout Plymouth County and the Southcoast, visit OCES’ website at www.ocesma.org/volunteer. SOCIAL SERVICES CORNER Did you know that the Marshfield Fire Department has a Patient Advocacy Alert Program that is available to all residents in town? If you have a medical condition, the MFD will complete a Patient Advocacy Alert form. They will place that form in a secure location of their 911 Dispatch Center and enter your information into their database which are located on the Paramedic 1 & 2 ambulances. A few reasons to utilize the Patient Advocacy Alert Pro- gram include past medical history of chronic illness, terminal illness, inability to speak, patients on home oxygen, handicapped individuals, diabetes, seizures, pulmonary hypertension, babies with special needs, etc. In the event you are unable to speak or relay your important medical information, the MFD will have it already in their data- base. If you need EMS services frequently, this will eliminate the need to repeat your demographic information every time you call for help. The Patient Advocacy Alert Program allows the MFD to better serve and treat you in the event of a medical emergency. Contact the Marshfield Fire Department administration office 781-834-5546 to enroll or if you have any questions. We are currently taking fuel assistance applications over the phone for those in need of help paying their heat- ing bills. We are able to make copies for you if necessary and will submit the application and documentation for you. Fuel assistance is an income based program. For more information, contact Judy or Ken by calling the Senior Center. There are other fuel assistance resources available for those with higher income. Contact Judy or Ken for more info by calling the senior center at 781-834-5581.

The SHINE Program is recruiting Volunteers for SHINE Counselor Certification Training!! SHINE Counselors assist Medicare beneficiaries with understanding their Medicare costs, benefits, and options. We also screen for public benefit programs that can help reduce costs for low income households. SHINE Coun- seling is confidential, unbiased, and free! SHINE Counselors traditionally work within Councils on Aging and other human service organizations, however this past year we have learned how well our services can be delivered re- motely. Like so many others, our program continues to evolve to suit a wide variety of needs and circumstances and we are always looking for new candidates to add to our ranks! Our next certification training, consisting of twelve, three hour Zoom sessions, two days per week, will begin in May! If you would like more information about this opportunity and the training process please contact SHINE Program Regional Director, Christie Rexford at the Middleboro Council on Aging at 1-800-231-1155 or [email protected] 11 The Link • Marshfield APRIL 2021 VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION CORNER Chamber of Commerce! “Greetings Residents of Marshfield, Spring is around the corner! With that, construction of the Senior Center will kick into high gear. The General Con- tractor has been making slow and steady progress finishing the foundation and all the underground utilities. The new concrete subfloor is being installed. The weather couldn’t be any better. The sub-grading had been heated over the last week to prevent inadvertent frost from creeping under the building. The project has to meet a 6” book of specifications that detail every nut, bolt and material that the Town expects for the addition. Once the concrete “slab” is completed and the delivery of lumber and steel for the buildings skeleton will be next. We ex- pect to start to see walls up by the end of the month of March. The entire building should be up by the end of April. Exciting times for the Council on Aging. On the technical side, the old building and the new building are con- nected to the revised septic system. All of the drainage structures, “manholes,” are installed, as are most of the exterior electrical conduit to the light poles and the new “Electric Car Charging” station areas. Reminder to all: this is an active construction site. Please be careful driving up the driveway as there are fence posts on both side of the . Stay safe as we continue through this pandemic and remember to follow CDC and Board of Health guidelines. Fun Fact: The existing Senior Center is clad in traditional painted wood clapboard and shingles. The new Center will be clad in cementitious clapboard and shingles that look the same as wood but will last longer.”
