Chapman, a 6-2, 215-pound junior, batted .312 with six home runs and a team-leading 48 RBI this season for the Titans. He walked 27 times against just 26 strikeouts and finished the season with a .412 on-base percentage. The right-handed hitter also hit 16 doubles and stole six bases in eight attempts. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif., native was named to the First Team All-Big West Conference team following the 2014 season. This marks the sixth time in the last seven years the A’s have drafted a position player with their first-round pick, along with Billy McKinney (2013), Addison Russell (2012), Michael Choice (2010), Grant Green (2009) and Jemile Weeks (2008). The A’s drafted right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray in the first round in 2011. It also marks the first time the A’s have drafted a college player in the first round since Gray was selected out of Vanderbilt University three years ago. Oakland Athletics Call Up Top Prospect Michael Choice Author : @TheInscriberMag With the Sacramento River Cats being eliminated from playoff contention yesterday it didn't take much time for the Oakland Athletics to call up top outfield prospect Michael Choice. The now 23-year old got taken in the first round with the 10th pick in the 2010 MLB Draft and has progressively made his way up through the minor league system for the A's. For his 013 season in Sacramento he hit .302 with 154 hits, 90 runs scored, 29 doubles, a triple, 14 home runs, 89 rbi and a OBP of .390. He can play all three outfield positions though he most likely will see time in left field or right field when given the chance to start by manager Bob Melvin. Chris Young has struggled throughout the season and if the A's face a left-handed starter Choice might get the opportunity to start and according to the A's lineup card second basemen Jemile Weeks, shortstop Andy Parrino and reliever Pedro Figueroa have also been added to the roster. The River Cats do have two more games remaining for the season, so within the next couple of days more additions will get made. Currently the A's are two games back of the Texas Rangers for the AL West division and are looking to sweep the Tampa Bay Rays with right-hander A.J. The Athletics also drafted shortstop Daniel Robertson from Upland High School in Upland, Calif., and first baseman Matt Olson from Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga., as compensation picks following the first round. Russell batted .358 with eight home runs and 33 RBI in 32 games for Pace HS this year. He added 30 walks for a .532 on-base percentage and scored 40 runs. Russell hit .460 in his four-year high school career with 37 home runs. The 11th overall selection, Russell is the first high school pick by the A’s in the first round since 2001 when they drafted Jeremy Bonderman with the 26th selection. Since 1991, the only other high school players the A’s selected in the first round were Eric Chavez (1996) and Ben Grieve (1994). Russell is the third position player the A’s have chosen in the first round in the last four years along with Michael Choice (2010) and Grant Green (2009). The A’s drafted right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray in the first round last year. -

MLB.COM Reds sign free agents Parra, Olivo Reliever could bolster lefty presence in ‘pen; catcher brings depth to camp February 1, 2013, 9:57 PM ET By Mark Sheldon CINCINNATI -- The Reds on Friday added some depth to their bullpen and behind the plate by signing two free agents. Lefty Manny Parra was signed to a one-year contract worth a reported $1 million, with a chance to earn an additional $400,000 in appearance bonuses. Earlier in the day, the club signed catcher Miguel Olivo to a Minor League contract with an invite to big league Spring Training as a non-roster player. To make room for Parra on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Todd Redmond was designated for assignment. Parra, 30, spent his entire pro career in the Brewers organization, including five seasons in the Majors. He was thrilled to be joining a former National League Central rival. "I was excited, especially when I heard they were interested," Parra told MLB.com. "I'm excited to have an opportunity with a team that's doing so well. I always had a ton of respect when playing against them and now I am looking forward to playing for them." Originally a prized young starting pitcher who once threw a perfect game in Triple-A, Parra didn't develop into the ace Milwaukee hoped for. He was to be moved to the bullpen in 2011 but missed the entire season with a sprained elbow ligament and back issues. In 2012, Parra was 2-3 with a 5.06 ERA in a career-high 62 appearances while earning $1.2 million. -

A’s News Clips, Monday, November 21, 2011 Report: A's may find out soon if they can move to San Jose San Jose Mercury News staff and wire report There are indications that Major League Baseball is now quickly moving toward a decision on whether to permit the A's to move to San Jose, Fox Sports reported Saturday. Commissioner Bud Selig, who nearly three years ago appointed a committee to help decide the A's future home, reportedly plans to meet with the San Francisco Giants within the next two weeks. The Giants hold territorial rights to San Jose, a huge obstacle Selig would have to help the A's clear through negotiations. According to Fox's sources, the A's already met with Selig earlier this month, and the team has given MLB assurances it will comply with baseball's request to expand the A's proposed 32,000-seat capacity of Cisco Field. The San Jose City Council last week agreed to give the A's exclusive rights for up to three years to buy almost 5 acres of downtown land for $6.9 million in order to build the ballpark near San Jose's Diridon Station.
