Health Requirements for Poultry & Pigeons 4 DEPARTMENT 8 Animal Health Regulation POULTRY Section 13: Pennsylvania Poultry, Including Chickens, Turkeys, Waterfowl, Upland Game Birds, Ratites and Pigeons/doves, and Hatching Eggs Requirements: 1. All Pennsylvania poultry, including chickens, turkeys, waterfowl, and upland game birds entering an exhibition must bear an official PDA-issued crimp style or butt end style leg band. Ratites must be identified with a neck band or an electronic implant device (the exhibitor must supply a reader). Pigeons and doves must bear a unique individual identification leg band but do not have to be identified with an official PDA leg band. 2. An Owner-endorsed Poultry Health Certificate or a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health chart or CVI) must accompany all Pennsylvania poultry, including chickens, turkeys, waterfowl, upland game birds, and ratites; and pigeons/doves; and hatching eggs. The certificate must include the following: ▪ Name and location of exhibition; and ▪ Name, address, and telephone number of the owner; and ▪ A statement that the entries and the flock of origin are free of evidence of infectious and contagious diseases; and ▪ Owner signature and date of that signature. 3. Avian Influenza Testing and Verification: All samples must be collected by a Certified Poultry Technician or a Category II Accredited Veterinarian. ▪ All poultry, including chickens, turkeys, waterfowl, upland game birds, and ratites, (pigeons/doves excluded), and their hatching eggs for exhibition must originate from a flock in which a random, representative sample of a minimum of 30 birds, 3 weeks of age or older, were tested for avian influenza within the 30 days prior to opening date of the exhibition. The birds or hatching eggs must be accompanied by the most recent test report (copy acceptable). Test results must be negative. If there are fewer than 30 birds in the flock, test all birds. For waterfowl, cloacal swab samples must be collected for testing instead of blood samples, and the swabs may be tested using PCR techniques. Swabs from geese and ducks may not be combined in the same tube for testing. Untested birds shall not be comingled with or added to the tested flock after negative samples have been collected and before the show. 4. Pullorum-typhoid Testing and Verification (pigeons/doves and waterfowl excluded for exhibition). All samples must be collected by a Certified Poultry Technician or a Category II Accredited Veterinarian. ▪ Poultry, including chickens, turkeys, upland game birds and ratites (waterfowl excluded) and their hatching eggs must originate from a flock in good standing on the NPIP Pullorum-typhoid Clean Program (and there was no break in the chain of ownership by NPIP participants) or from a flock in good standing on the PA Pullorum Equivalent Program. The birds or hatching eggs must be accompanied by the most recent test report (copy acceptable). Test results must be negative. If the rapid whole- blood plate agglutination test was done, the most recent NPIP 9-2 form or state equivalent form must accompany the birds or hatching eggs (copy acceptable). Test results must be negative. If birds are less than one year of age and originate from an NPIP Clean hatchery, they do not have to be tested for pullorum-typhoid if they are accompanied by an NPIP 9-3 form from that hatchery and any additions to the flock were also from NPIP Clean sources. The NPIP number must be noted on the report for NPIP Pullorum-typhoid Clean flocks; 5 DEPARTMENT 8 OR ▪ All individual birds (pigeons/doves and waterfowl excluded) for exhibition (maximum of 300) must have had a pullorum-typhoid test within the 90 days prior to the opening date of the exhibition. The birds must be accompanied by the most recent test report, or state equivalent form for the rapid test (copies acceptable). Test results must be negative. The following age restrictions apply: ▪ Chickens shall be tested at 4 months of age or older. ▪ Turkeys shall be tested at 12 weeks of age or older. ▪ Game birds shall be tested at 4 months of age or older, or upon sexual maturity, whichever comes first. ▪ Ratites shall be tested at 12 months of age or older. ▪ All birds not meeting these age restrictions at the time of sampling are exempt from pullorum-typhoid testing requirements. Section 14: Out of State Poultry, Including Chickens, Turkeys, Waterfowl, Upland Game Birds, Ratites, Pigeons/doves and Hatching Eggs Requirements: 1.

  • The South African Breed Standard for the Rhode Island
SOUTHERN AFRICAN SHOW POULTRY ORGANISATION BREED STANDARDS RHODE ISLAND ORIGIN: American CLASSIFICATION: Heavy breed: Soft feather EGG COLOUR: Light brown to dark brown (Sitters) MASSES: LARGE FOWL: Cock: 4.0 kg Hen: 3.0 kg Cockerel: 3.6 kg Pullet: 2.5 kg BANTAMS: Male: 1.7 kg max Female: 1.5 kg max RHODE ISLAND RED The origin of this breed dates back to a fowl bred in that section of New England which is located between Narragansett Bay and Buzzard's Bay. The name Rhode Island Red was given to the breed in honour of the State where it originated from crossing the Red Malay Game, Leghorn and Asiatic native stock and first exhibited in 1880 in South Massachusetts. In 1904 the single comb variety was admitted to the American Standards as a distinct breed of poultry. 2013 Page 1 of 7 The Rose Comb Rhode Island Red was admitted to the American Standard in 1906, although some breeders acclaim it to be the original variety. The earlier Rhode Island Reds sported both the single and rose combs, some even having pea combs, due to their mixed ancestry and the fact of their being bred primarily for market purposes before they become a Standard breed. An important dual-purpose breed, capable of excellent egg production, but also popular at poultry exhibitions. RHODE ISLAND WHITE While the names and place of origin are the same, the Rhode Island White is actually a distinctly different breed from the Rhode Island Red. The Rhode Island White was developed in 1888 by Mr.

  • Top 10 Birds for Raising Backyard Chickens
Top 10 Birds for Raising Backyard Chickens (According to Chickenreview.com) When you’re picking your first flock, there are a few key things to look for: 1. The breed should be a recognized breed, and should be easy to find in most hatcheries. 2. The breed should have a reputation for docility, friendliness, and general tameness. 3. The breed should be fairly low-maintenance without too many care issues. You should decide whether you’re raising chickens for table meat or just eggs. If you want eggs, choose a breed that excels at laying. If you want meat, make sure to pick birds that gain weight quickly. The great thing about chickens is there are a few breeds that meet these criteria, making them excellent birds for the average backyard flock. Some of these birds are good layers and some are good layers and meat birds also! We’ve put together a list of our ten favorite chicken breeds for Urban or backyard flocks. Each of the breeds on our list meets most of the items to look for we’ve mentioned, and are very good birds for a beginner. 1: Rhode Island Red: The Best Dual-Purpose Bird: Easy to care for and a good layer! They are a popular choice for backyard flocks because of their egg laying abilities and hardiness. Although they can sometimes be stubborn, healthy hens can lay up to 5–6 eggs per week depending on their care and treatment. Rhode Island Red hens lay many more eggs than an average hen if provided plenty of quality feed 2: Buff Orpington: The Best Pet Chicken: The one caution on this breed is that their docile nature will often make them a target for bullying from other birds.
