Each seems, in opposite ways, shocking to common sense. This paper explores the latter claim, looking for its source in Hume’s account of the passions and exploring its compatibility with his associationist psychology. We are led to the conclusion that this view—that desires vanish when fulfil- ment is deemed impossible—endows reason with a power over the passions that is at odds with its role as slave, and ultimately incompatible with a proper understanding of emotions such as grief. Such emotions involve continuing to want what one believes to be impossible. The human (and Humean) imagina- tion can sustain desires without the belief that fulfilment is possible. [N]othing is more certain, than that despair has almost the same effect upon us with enjoyment, and that we are no sooner acquainted with the impossibility of satisfying any desire, than the desire itself vanishes. -

Isaac Watts's Hymnody As a Guide for the Passions
English Literature e-ISSN 2420-823X Vol. 5 – December 2018 ISSN 2385-1635 Isaac Watts’s Hymnody as a Guide for the Passions Daniel Johnson (University of Leicester, UK) Abstract Isaac Watts (1674-1748) argued that the passions, understood synonymously with the affections, were an essential component of the Christian experience. Watts designed a system of hymnody which allowed the worshipper to excite, cultivate, and express their passions. This paper traces the history of the passions and affections in those who were to influence Watts’ thought, before considering the ways Watts’ hymns allowed the passions to be experienced and articulated. Calvinism. 1 Introduction1 Isaac Watts (1674-1748), the dissenting minster, hymnwriter, educator, and philosopher, is a pivotal figure, representing the transition and migration from seventeenth-century Calvinism to eighteenth-century Evangelicalism. He is, in the words of Graham Beynon, an “Enlightenment Puritan” (2016, 192), situated between “Puritanism and Reason, and between Reason and Revelation” (Watson 1999, 136). He inherited the attitudes and priorities of the Puritans, modifying and communicating them for changing society (Rivers 1991, 168). Rather than reject either the Reformed faith, or the ideas emerging in the early enlightenment, Watts attempted to bring the two together into a balance of rational and affectionate religion (see Bey- non 2016). The subtitle to Dewey D. Wallace, Jr.’s Shapers of English Cal- vinism, 1660-1714, describes a religion defined by three characteristics: variety, persistence, and transformation. -

A Hegelian Critique of Desire Based Reasons Abstract This paper approaches Humean accounts of desire from a perspective relatively unexplored in contemporary moral theory, namely Hegel’s ethical thought. I contend that Hegel’s treatment of desire is, ultimately, somewhat more Humean than Hegel himself recognized. But Hegel also goes further than contemporary Humeans in recognizing the sociality of the normative domain, and this difference has important implications for the Humean thesis of desire-based reasons (DBR). I develop a Hegelian critique of DBR and conclude by outlining a distinctively Hegelian approach to understanding the normative import of desire. NICOLAS MALEBRANCHE.l BY PROF. L. LEVY-BRUHL. ALEBRANCHE was a philosopher, to use Plato's beautiful Mexpression, from his whole soul. Far from raising a kind of impenetrable partition between his religious faith and his rational thought, he did not even conceive the possibility of a conflict be tween faith and philosophy, if the latter were genuine. "I am persuaded, Ariste, that one has need to be a sound philosopher in order to find one's way in the understanding of the truths of faith, and that the better fortified one is in the true principles of meta physics, the more steadfastly will one cling to the truths of reli gion." These few words sum up the program which Malebranche endeavored to carry out, or, more exactly, the jJostulatum, the truth of which his whole philosophy seeks to establish. To this end it was necessary for him to introduce new elements I . between Catholic dogma and the Cartesian rationalism, which would enable him to pass insensibly from the one to the other. These elements almost spontaneously offered themselves to him in Augustine, whose doctrine was particularly studied by the congre gation of the Oratory, to which Malebranche belonged. With the help of Augustine, he dived deep into ancient philosophy, from which he chiefly borrowed Platonic notions, and towards whose notions the natural bent of his mind inclined him. Thus the tra dition which Descartes thought to have definitely interrupted be tween the ancient and the modern philosophy was renewed with the very first generation which sprang from him, at the hands of his most illustrious successor. -

In this course, we will consider how two 17th century arch-rationalists approached these topics: Rene Descartes and Baruch Spinoza. More specifically, we will examine their answers to questions such as: How do the passions relate to the mind and the body? In what ways are passions valuable for (semi-)rational creatures like us? Can we control our passions with reason? What do our passions tell us about value? Some background in the history of philosophy will be helpful, but is not required.
