Biota Neotropica 20(4): e20200094. https://doi.org/10.1590/1676-0611-BN-2020-0994 Abstract: The Ribeira de Iguape River basin has about 100 fish species. This study aimed to characterize the fish community from “serranias costeiras” of the Ribeira de Iguape River basin. Samplings were conducted with electrofishing during the dry season in the years 2018-2019. The sampling effort consisted of 30 streams stretches. As a result, 50 species were captured, distributed in 37 genera, 11 families, and six orders. The species richness estimate (SChao1) was 57 species, and the coverage estimate for the entire data set was C = 0.998. Harttia kronei and Chasmocranus lopezae are endemic species and can be used as bioindicators of streams in this river basin. We captured approximately nine species by stream stretch. Beta diversity was found to be more critical for gamma diversity than alpha diversity. This finding highlights the streams environmental heterogeneity importance for maintaining regional fish diversity. We captured eight individuals of the threatened species Spintherobolus papilliferus and this indicates an expansion in the geographic distribution of this species. Ictiofauna das “serranias costeiras” da bacia do rio Ribeira de Iguape, sudeste do Brasil Resumo: A bacia hidrográfica do rio Ribeira de Iguape possui cerca de 100 espécies de peixes. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar a comunidade de peixes de riachos das serranias costeiras da bacia do rio Ribeira de Iguape. O levantamento das espécies foi realizado com uso de pesca elétrica durante a estação seca de 2018-2019. As coletas ocorreram em 30 trechos de riachos. Foram capturadas 50 espécies distribuídas em 37 gêneros, 11 famílias e seis ordens. A estimativa de riqueza de espécies (SChao1) foi de 57 espécies e a estimativa de cobertura para todo o conjunto de dados foi de C = 0,998. Harttia kronei e Chasmocranus lopezae são espécies endêmicas e podem ser usadas como bioindicadores para os riachos nesta bacia hidrográfica. Capturamos aproximadamente nove espécies por trecho de riacho. A diversidade beta foi considerada mais importante para a diversidade gama do que a diversidade alfa. Esse resultado destaca a importância da heterogeneidade ambiental dos riachos para manter a diversidade regional de peixes. ARMBRUSTER Loricariid catfishes have evolved several modifications of the digestive tract that • appear to fWIction as accessory respiratory organs or hydrostatic organs. Adapta­ tions include an enlarged stomach in Pterygoplichthys, Liposan:us, Glyptoperichthys, Hemiancistrus annectens, Hemiancistrus maracaiboensis, HyposWmus panamensis, and Lithoxus; a U-shaped diverticulum in Rhinelepis, Pseudorinelepis, Pogonopoma, and Po­ gonopomoides; and a ringlike diverticulum in Otocinclus. Scoloplacids, closely related to loricariids, have enlarged, clear, air-filled stomachs similar to that of Lithoxus. The ability to breathe air in Otocinclus was confirmed; the ability of Lithoxus and Scoloplax to breathe air is inferred from morphology. The diverticula of Pogonopomoides and Pogonopoma are similar to swim bladders and may be used as hydrostatic organs. The various modifications of the stomach probably represent characters that define monophyletic clades. The ovaries of Lithoxus were also examined and were sho~ to have very few (15--17) mature eggs that were large (1.6-2.2 mm) for the small size of the fish (38.6-41.4 mm SL). ZAWADZKI² ¹Universidade Estadual Paulista, UNESP, Departamento de Morfologia, Laboratório de Biologia e Genética de Peixes, 18618-000 Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil ²Universidade Estadual de Maringá, UEM, Departamento de Biologia/Nupélia, 87020-900 Maringá, Paraná, Brazil Abstract In this study, we describe three new species of the genus Neoplecostomus: N. bandeirante, from Salesópolis in the state of São Paulo, N. langeanii from Muzambinho, in the state of Minas Gerais, and N. botucatu from Botucatu, in the state of São Paulo. All of the described species are found in the Upper Rio Paraná basin. The new species are different from each other and from their nominal congeners in their mitochondrial DNA sequences (COI), morphology and meristic traits, in addition to their color patterns. Morphologically, N. bandeirante can be distinguished from all congeners by the presence of moderate keels throughout the lateral series of plates and by a naked area between each mid-ventral and ventral plate that is greater in size than the length of these plates. Neoplecostomus botucatu is morphologically distinguished by a re- duction of the adipose fin and the presence of dark spots that are distributed along the body. Neoplecostomus langeanii can be morphologically distinguished by the absence of hypertrophied odontodes and a swollen integument on the head, as well as by morphometric characteristics.

Two new species of heptapterid catfish genus Cetopsorhamdia are described from close localities in western Brazil, at Chapada dos Parecis, an area with extremely high level of endemism. One species is from the upper Rio Madeira system, Rondônia State, and the other from the upper Rio Tapajós system, Mato Grosso State. The two species are diagnosed, among several other features, by their markedly distinctive color patterns, with the former having well-defined quadrangular marks in trunk flanks while the latter bearing irregular, vertical bars along the trunk. The monophyly of Cetopsorhamdia is discussed, with two putative synapomorphies being proposed to support the genus. Potentially informative morphological characters to resolve the internal relationships of the genus are presented and discussed. Despite the striking external differences between the two species herein described, they are found to likely form a clade.
