Page 1 of 36 These liturgies are based on the rituals of the Buddhist tradition, with most texts translated into English and incorporating a simplified 4-tone chanting system. Most texts are taken from the Taego A-E Parish Service Manual. There is limited use of Korean and for important, traditional texts.

Key to special symbols:

⩃ indicates the striking of the seong-myeong (large bell) ⊙ indicates the striking of the yo-ryeong (small bell) ❢ indicates the striking of the moktak (wooden gong) ∖ indicates the striking of the chokpi (small stick)

Hapjang � means to hold the hands palm-to-palm

➀➁➂ indicates something that happens only on a specified repetition of a text

A red line indicates pitch changes in chants: 1 tone up 2 tones up Base tone 1 tone down

In texts to be chanted, regular text indicates a single beat (musically equivalent to a quarter note or shorter) bold text indicates two beats (equivalent to a half note or longer)

Jun Bal Gae (Setting Out Bowls) [spoken – hapjang � ] Now I set out these four bowls, Which symbolize the reception of the Buddha’s enlightened wisdom. May all beings without distinction, take part in this offering And realize the purity in the three wheels without self.

Shik Sa Ha Neun Ma Um (Before Eating) [spoken – hapjang � ] Where does this food come from? My efforts are not worthy enough to receive it.

I let go of all of my excessive desires and unhealthy attachments. I take this food only as medicine to maintain my health. I receive this food in order to awaken, and realize my true nature.

Sheek Pil Gae (After the Meal)[spoken – hapjang � ] The meal is finished, our strength is restored. May we use this strength to help all sentient beings in the past, present, and future, in all of the ten direction.

This is what should be done By one who is skilled in goodness, And who knows the path of peace: Let them be able and upright, Straightforward and gentle in speech. Humble and not conceited, Contented and easily satisfied. Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways. Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful, Not proud and demanding in nature. Let them not do the slightest thing That the wise would later reprove. Wishing: In gladness and in safety, May all beings be at ease. Whatever living beings there may be; Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none, The great or the mighty, medium, short or small, The seen and the unseen, Those living near and far away, Those born and to-be-born, May all beings be at ease! Page 27 of 36 The Jung-Yu (Antara-bhava)* Prayer [spoken – hapjang � ] ⊙ ⊙ ⊙ O Compassionate Ones, abiding in all directions, Endowed with all-knowing wisdom and loving compassion, Giving protection and guidance to all sentient beings, We invoke your presence and ask that you hear our prayer. ⊙

O compassionates ones, NAME is passing from this world to the next, S/he is entering the great mystery of death and . ⊙

O compassionate ones, Protect our fellow being who is now defenseless. Be to him/her a father and a mother. O compassionate ones, Give guidance to our fellow being who is now alone with the joys and sorrows of his/her past life. Guide him/her to see beyond his/her blindness and let go of attachments so that s/he may move freely through the passage between lives. ⊙

May the power of unconditional forgiveness embrace him/her. May s/he be clear and unafraid amid the karmic winds that may surround him/her. May s/he know all sounds as his/her own sound. May s/he know all lights as his/her own light. May s/he know all pain and pleasure to be transient. ⊙

O compassionate ones, Help his/her heart to be open, And may the thought of loving kindness guide him/her to choose a new life that will benefit himself/herself and others. ⊙

Antara-bhava (in Korean, jung-yu) refers to the intermediate state between death and rebirth, more commonly known in the West by the Tibetan word “.” Traditionally special prayers are recited every seven days after the death, culminating with the 49-day memorial service.

This prayer is not of Korean origin, but is of Korean . It was composed by Dharma Teacher Parang Jerri Larkin of the Still Point Zen in Detroit, Michigan, which is in the lineage of Ven. Samu Sunim.
