Belmont Zen Center 려산암 Ryeo-san-am Beautiful Mountain Hermitage Service Liturgies June 12, 2021 Page 1 of 36 These liturgies are based on the rituals of the Korean Seon Buddhist tradition, with most texts translated into English and incorporating a simplified 4-tone chanting system. Most texts are taken from the Taego A-E Parish Service Manual. There is limited use of Korean and Sanskrit for important, traditional texts. Key to special symbols: ⩃ indicates the striking of the seong-myeong (large bell) ⊙ indicates the striking of the yo-ryeong (small bell) ❢ indicates the striking of the moktak (wooden gong) ∖ indicates the striking of the chokpi (small stick) Hapjang � means to hold the hands palm-to-palm ➀➁➂ indicates something that happens only on a specified repetition of a text A red line indicates pitch changes in chants: 1 tone up 2 tones up Base tone 1 tone down In texts to be chanted, regular text indicates a single beat (musically equivalent to a quarter note or shorter) bold text indicates two beats (equivalent to a half note or longer) Belmont Zen Center / Ryeo-san-am is an affiliate of the American-European Parish of the Korean Taego Order, and an extension ministry of the Muddy Water Zen Temple in Royal Oak, MI (Hae Doh Sunim, Abbot). The same is true of feeling, thought, impulse and consciousness. ⊙ O, Shariputra, all dharmas are empty. They are not born, nor annihilated. They are not deJiled, nor immaculate. They do not increase, nor decrease. So, in emptiness, no form, no feeling, no thought, no impulse, no consciousness. ⊙ No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind; no form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or objects of mind; no realm of sight, no realm of consciousness. ⊙ No ignorance, nor extinction of ignorance; no old age and death, nor extinction of them. ⊙ No suffering, no cause of suffering, no cease from suffering, no path to lead out of suffering; no knowledge, no attainment, no realization, for there is nothing to attain. ⊙ The Bodhisattva holds on to nothing but Prajñaparamita, therefore the mind is clear of any delusive hindrance.
