ARTICLES It’s Not About the Money: THE ROLE OF PREFERENCES, COGNITIVE BIASES, AND HEURISTICS AMONG PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES Michael A. McCann† I. INTRODUCTION Professional athletes are often regarded as selfish, greedy, and out-of-touch with regular people. They hire agents who are vilified for negotiating employment contracts that occasionally yield compensation in excess of national gross domestic products.1 Professional athletes are thus commonly assumed to most value economic remuneration, rather than the “love of the game” or some other intangible, romanticized inclination. Lending credibility to this intuition is the rational actor model; a law and economic precept which presupposes that when individuals are presented with a set of choices, they rationally weigh costs and benefits, and select the course of † Assistant Professor of Law, Mississippi College School of Law; LL.M., Harvard Law School; J.D., University of Virginia School of Law; B.A., Georgetown University. The Chicago Bears chose Devin Hester with the 57th pick in the 2006 draft, nike nfl uniforms 2012, and they got a steal. Hester is the best kick returner in the league, new nfl nike jerseys, and he has a chance to go down in history as the best kick returner ever. Every N.F.L. team would love to pick this year’s version of Devin Hester. But does this draft have a Devin Hester? One surprisingly bold player is willing to say it does, and he’s it: Troy cornerback Leodis McKelvin. The Vikings clearly were unconcerned about the risks of a huge second contract for a superstar running back. We discussed that issue this summer, nfl jersey monster, leaked nike nfl jerseys, noting the relatively short career spans for running backs and the recent examples of big-time runners whose production dipped dramatically after signing their second contracts. Peterson has tallied 1,334 touches in his career, womens football jerseys, including kickoff returns, but has missed only three of a possible 64 games and has had no off-field issues that would compromise his eligibility to play with the league. Most NFL observers consider Peterson and the Tennessee Titans' Chris Johnson as the co-best running backs in the league, football jersey creator, but Peterson's deal exceeds the one Johnson signed last month. Johnson's extension averaged $13.3 million in new money and included $30 million in guarantees. Peterson's will average nearly $15 million per season in new money over the life of the deal, make your own college football jersey, in addition to the $36 million guaranteed.

  • All-Nfc North Team
ALL-NFC NORTH TEAM By Bob McGinn Posted: Dec. 31, 2005 Scouts from each of the NFC North teams were asked last week to rank the top three players in the division at each position. They were not permitted to vote for their own players, and none of the comments that follow in the position-by-position rundown was made by a scout about a player on his own team. A first-place vote was worth three points, a second-place vote was worth two and a third-place vote was worth one. Asterisks denote unanimous selections. OFFENSE NO. 1 WIDE RECEIVER: *Muhsin Muhammad (Chi.), 9 points. Others: Donald Driver (GB), 7; Roy Williams (Det.), 5; Travis Taylor (Minn.), 3. Comments: Muhammad dropped 11 passes and cost the Bears $12 million in signing bonus, but he was light years better than the No. 1 from '94, David Terrell. "It's a bad group," one scout said. "If (Rex) Grossman had been the quarterback it'd have been easier to determine where Muhammad is at in his career." Driver had one of his finest seasons. "He's still a better 2 than he is a 1," one scout said. Williams ranks as a two-year disappointment. "He has to understand the difference between being hurt and being injured," one scout said. LEFT TACKLE: Chad Clifton (GB), 8. Others: Jeff Backus (Det.) and John Tait (Chi.), 6; Bryant McKinnie (Minn.), 4. Comments: Clifton had too many penalties but made first team for the third year in a row. "He's close to elite," one scout said.

  • Big 12 Conference Schools Raise Nine-Year NFL Draft Totals to 277 Alumni Through 2003
Big 12 Conference Schools Raise Nine-Year NFL Draft Totals to 277 Alumni Through 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Apr. 26, 2003 DALLAS—Big 12 Conference teams had 10 of the first 62 selections in the 35th annual NFL “common” draft (67th overall) Saturday and added a total of 13 for the opening day. The first-day tallies in the 2003 NFL draft brought the number Big 12 standouts taken from 1995-03 to 277. Over 90 Big 12 alumni signed free agent contracts after the 2000-02 drafts, and three of the first 13 standouts (six total in the first round) in the 2003 draft were Kansas State CB Terence Newman (fifth draftee), Oklahoma State DE Kevin Williams (ninth) Texas A&M DT Ty Warren (13th). Last year three Big 12 standouts were selected in the top eight choices (four of the initial 21), and the 2000 draft included three alumni from this conference in the first 20. Colorado, Nebraska and Florida State paced all schools nationally in the 1995-97 era with 21 NFL draft choices apiece. Eleven Big 12 schools also had at least one youngster chosen in the eight-round draft during 1998. Over the last six (1998-03) NFL postings, there were 73 Big 12 Conference selections among the Top 100. There were 217 Big 12 schools’ grid representatives on 2002 NFL opening day rosters from all 12 members after 297 standouts from league members in ’02 entered NFL training camps—both all-time highs for the league. Nebraska (35 alumni) was third among all Division I-A schools in 2002 opening day roster men in the highest professional football configuration while Texas A&M (30) was among the Top Six in total NFL alumni last autumn.
