An Update from Seminarian Jacob Gruber My dear friends at Archangel Gabriel, as many of you know, I took a leave of absence from seminary for the last year to go to the desert of Egypt. I was looking for a time of prayer, discernment, and preparation for what priestly ministry would call for in the future. Praise God – it was exactly what I needed. I flew to Cairo at the end of August and stayed there for FROM A SEMINARIANFROM a couple of months, making arrangements to get into a monastery. In the model of the Holy Family, after my own flight into Egypt, I visited and prayed at many of the places where they stayed. From October 2020 to May 2021, I stayed at St. Macarius Monastery in the desert of Egypt, between Cairo and Alexandria. While here, I entered into the rich liturgical life of the monastery in early morning praises, sunset prayers, long vigils, and ancient rituals of HolyMass. I buried myself in the Sacred Scriptures and the Church’s treasury of spirituality. I learned from desert fathers, ancient and new. And most important of all, I came to know more deeply of the great love God has for us. And now – praise the Lord – I’m back. The Lord pointed the way back into Pittsburgh, and Bishop Zubik generously welcomed me back. This summer, I’ll do some part time work back here at AGP, and then in August I’ll head back to Theological College in Washington, D.C. for my third year of theology. Thank you for all the support I’ve gotten in doing this trip and all the love you’ve shown me. I’m looking forward to diving back in! ARCHANGEL GABRIEL PARISH PRAYER O blessed Archangel Gabriel, you announced our salvation to the Virgin Mary. Pray for us that we may be courageous and compassionate, strong and faithful followers of her Son, Jesus. By your intercession, obtain for us the unification of our parish, and the fruitfulness of our mission to make disciples. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints, through Christ, our Lord. Amen. 3 PROCESSIONAL HYMN — THERE’S A WIDENESS IN GOD’S MERCY FIRST READING — AMOS 7:12-15 Amaziah, priest of Bethel, said to Amos, “Off with you, visionary, flee to the land of Judah! There earn your bread by prophesying, but never again prophesy in Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal temple.” Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor have I belonged to a company of prophets; I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.” FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME IN ORDINARY FIFTEENTH SUNDAY 4 RESPONSORIAL PSALM — PSALM 85 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME IN ORDINARY FIFTEENTH SUNDAY 1. I will hear what the Lord God speaks; he speaks of peace for his people and his faithful. His salvation is near for those who fear him, and his glory will dwell in our land. R/ 2. Merciful love and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have kissed. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth, and justice look down from heaven. R/ 3. Also the Lord will bestow his bounty, and our earth shall yield its increase. Justice will march before him, and guide his steps on the way. R/ SECOND READING — EPHESIANS 3:1-14 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved. In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth. In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped in Christ. In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised holy Spirit, which is the first installment of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Verse: May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. GOSPEL — MARK 6:7-13 Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick—no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.” So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. 5 OFFERTORY HYMN — SOUL, ADORN YOURSELF WITH GLADNESS AMEN FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME IN ORDINARY FIFTEENTH SUNDAY LAMB OF GOD 6 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME IN ORDINARY FIFTEENTH SUNDAY COMMUNION HYMN — THIS IS MY SONG PRINT MUSIC LICENSE One License AGP License Number: 700868-A Invoice Number: 275339 License Type: Annual License G 7 SATURDAY, JULY 10 4:00 PM - SMC Deceased Members of the Barbera Family by Barbera Family 5:00 PM - HTC Anthony V. Sermon for the Exile in Egypt and the Feast of the Epiphany Preached at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Mt. Kisco, NY By the Rev. William A. Doubleday, Priest in Charge January 5, 2014 In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We just heard a part of the story of the Magi – the wise men from the East – the Persian astrologers – the Gentile visitors to the Baby Jesus and his parents in Bethlehem – from Matthew’s Gospel. Today I want to speak to you about what the late Radio Announcer Paul Harvey might have called the REST OF THE STORY. The fuller story is punctuated with dreams. The Magi are warned not to go back to King Herod and report the exact location of Jesus. Joseph is warned in a dream that Herod has resolved to kill every child under two in and around Bethlehem. Joseph, Mary, and Jesus flee to Egypt and after some time, when Herod has finally died, Joseph is advised to go back to the land of Israel in one dream, and then advised to go not to Bethlehem, but to Nazareth in still another dream. The part of the story I particularly want to emphasize today is the flight into Egypt. Egypt, the land from which the once enslaved Hebrew people fled at the time of the Exodus, becomes in Matthew’s Infancy Narrative a safe haven – a refuge – a place to hide for the Infant Jesus and his Holy Family. So we have the horribly ironic and timely story of a mad ruler seeking to destroy the very Infant who came into the world to save his people.

  • What Should We Say About Mary?
What Should We Say about Mary? As Protestants show new interest in the mother of Christ, they often think they need to have something to say about Mary, rather than to her. Why not begin with the first words spoken both to and about Mary from God’s own messenger, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28)? • A1604 ~ the Flight Into Egypt
BIBLE RADIO PRODUCTIONS www.bibleradio.org.au BIBLE ADVENTURES SCRIPT: A1604 ~ The Flight into Egypt. Welcome to Bible Adventures. Help for today. Hope for tomorrow. Jesus is Lord of all. A few years after the year 1900, a little girl was born to English parents. From when she was old enough, her mother sent the little girl to Sunday School. But when she turned 14 years of age, she thought she was too grown up to go anymore. She had a problem which upset her. When every other teenager was growing tall, she didn’t grow at all. This meant she was much shorter than her friends. However, she had beautiful black hair. God gave her both of these things to help her in the work that He wanted her to do in China. Until she was 26 years old, Gladys lived a very worldly life. One day, a group of her friends went to a revival meeting. She went along just for the laughs. The preacher spoke of dedicating one’s life to God. Gladys did so and soon after, believed that she should go to China as a missionary. She failed her exams set by a missions board but worked hard and saved all the money she could. She heard about a 73-year old missionary lady in China who was looking for a younger woman to help her. Gladys wrote to her and was accepted, provided she could pay her own way. Gladys didn’t have enough money for a ship fare but enough to travel by train.

  • My Brothers and Sisters, Today We Celebrate the Feast of the Holy
Holy Family - A Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14; Colossians 3:12-21; Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 Little Flower - 12/29/19 My Brothers and Sisters, Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Each year the Feast of the Holy Family invites us to reflect on family. Today’s reading from Sirach has great relevance in today’s world. Sirach challenged his readers to take care of their elderly parents even if their minds failed. Living in a world where people live longer and many suffer from dementia, many families experience role reversal. Adult children are put in a position of caring for their parents although they often have their own children to take care of and, as they get older, their own health problems. On the 4th Sunday of Advent, I mentioned the book Holiness is Wholeness and living in right relationships with God, others, the world, and ourselves. When we need to help our parents more, it is very important that we strive to maintain a healthy balance in our own lives. Writing about the relationship between adult children and their elderly parents, Sirach stressed the importance of extended family. Families are more than just parents and their children. Many years ago, a well known Catholic writer wrote a cautionary tale about his family’s journey. When he and his wife married, they moved from Pennsylvania to California for what seemed to be great personal and professional opportunities. Later in life, however, they were not so sure they made the right choice.

Rest on the Flight into Egypt by Luc-Olivier Merson © SOPHIA INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS 116 SESSION PLAN Share Your Faith Consider sharing with your students a story about one of your own favorite possessions. Share what it is and why it is important to you. Most important, emphasize how you take great care of this possession because of its importance to you. Perhaps explain that you keep it in a special place and are gentle and careful with it when you use it, and so forth. Help your students recognize that we take good care of the things that are important to us. 1. Explain the following to your students: ӹ Jesus is God’s Son and God loves His Son very much. (As we have learned, the Father and the Son eternally share their love for one another. That reality of love is at the very heart of our understanding of the Trinity.) Just as we care for and protect the things that we love that are important to us, God ensured that His Son, who He loved the most, was cared for and protected. And so He gave His Son an earthly foster father, St. Joseph, to care for Him as a human father, to protect Him, and to raise Him. Note: We call St. Joseph Jesus’ foster father because Jesus did not have a biological earthly father. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit — as Scripture tells us and as we affirm in the Nicene Creed. Therefore, God the Father is the true Father of Jesus, from whom Jesus receives His divinity.
