Spotted-Tailed Nightjar Nesting in Veracruz, Mexico
124 Vol. 59 SPOTTED-TAILED NIGHTJAR NESTING IN VERACRUZ, MEXICO By DALE A. ZIMMERMAN The Spotted-tailed Nightjar or Whip-poor-will (CaprimuZgus macdicaudus) was first reported from Mexico by Blake (1949~) on the basis of ten specimenscollected between January 1 and April 2, 1941, near Tutla, Oaxaca, at an elevation of about 4850 feet. Alvarez de1 Toro ( 1952 : 113) next collected one at Ocozocoautla, Chiapas (elevation 3305 feet), on April 24, 1949. Blake (19493: 211) wrote that “available records indi- cate that the speciesis relatively sedentary.” However, he later (1953:233) referred to it in his field guide as “apparently a winter visitant from South America.” In 1953, Davis and Morony (1953:360) found these nightjars “common on all the prairies of extreme southern Veracruz which we were able to visit during April” (the birds were common on the prairie south of Las Choapas on the night of May 3 which was the last day the observers were in the region). The elevation of the area was given as 100 feet. On April 26, 1956, Marian Zimmerman and I went with L. Irby Davis to Las Choa- pas where we camped out on the “prairie,” more properly termed a savanna, at the edge of a dense thicket (fig. 1). About 7:00 p.m., just after sundown, we heard a high- pitched, passerine-like pit szere&which Davis said was the voice of the nightjar. I soon saw the bird, a male, perched crosswayson a large fallen tree at the edge of the thicket. Before long, at least four more were calling near us-from the trail, where we could walk to within six feet of them as they sang; from the spindly low shrubs in the grassy areas; and from the air not far above us. -

AMBIVALENCES AND ASYMMETRIES IN THE URBANIZATION PROCESS IN THE GULF OF MEXICO: ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURES AND POPULATION CONCENTRATION Cuauhtémoc León and Hipólito Rodríguez FRAMEWORK: A DEFINITION OF THIS SPACE Three different countries surround this great marine water body; human activities both inland and in coastal zones and marine areas have modified, and will continue to modify this space’s biochemical, ecosystemic and, of course, socio-economic conditions. Such activities can be formally identified as the Gulf of Mexico’s economic and social space. From a historical perspective, they have had certain common traits and have perhaps been evolving at different intensities, but at least in a parallel fashion. The pace of changes has left marks shaping the landscape that can be “read,” yet unfortunately, in most instances these comprise an expansion and sequence of deleterious transformations. The boundaries of the Gulf of Mexico and, therefore, of what is considered to be its coastal zone, were defined a priori. Actually, they are of an operational nature so as to be able to deal simultaneously with three dimensions: the terrestrial landscape analyzed as ecoregions; socio-demographic dynamics studied on the basis of municipalities (or counties); and urban cores or cities, which enable us to easily visualize population concentration. Thus, the coastal zone was delimited as a mostly terrestrial strip having municipal boundaries (and therefore jurisdictional ones) and landscape features. As a result, this is not necessarily a region in the economic or geographic sense but rather, most likely, it is composed of asymmetrical, disconnected, and perhaps complementary territorial and political units which at most depend upon one another to a certain degree. -

ENMONTADA 43.1% Uso del Suelo BOSQUE En el estado existen 457,596 unidades de producción rurales las cuales abarcan una extensión O SELVA de 5'992, 142 ha; de ellas, 52.5°/o son de Labor; 43.1 °/o tienen Pasto Natural, Agostadero o están 2.9% Enmantadas; 2. 9°/o son de Bosque o Selva y 1.5%) Sin Vegetación. Los municipios con las mayores extensiones de superficie de Labor son Pánuco, Minatitlán, Ozuluama, Las Choapas y Tierra Blanca, en ellos se concentra casi una quinta parte del total estatal, 614,646 hectáreas.
