It was the Ray Schuler Memorial Tournament, planned and run by Noel Mendoza, who owns the Schuler cue-making franchise. Noel was assisted by Brian Haff, George Theobald and Mike Melloy. Camaraderie and competition ran full force as players from nine states competed for $6,000 in prize money. First place was won by Lupe Cruz from Iowa, second by David Camarena of Chicago and third by Alex Cruz, also from Chicago. Lupe won a Schuler cue in addition to the $1500 first prize money. Although both players are Hall -of-Famers, Earl has been competing and practicing regularly while Mike has only practiced for this contest. As we all know, both Earl Mand Mike like to talk to anyone who will listen and that’s what they did. Both players were mic’d and were free to express themselves without limitations. The variety of six disciplines: 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball, Straight Pool, Banks, and One- Pocket made each player a favorite in several disciplines. The 10-Ball match started out similarly, but a Strickland skid on game ball changed things including a swelling confidence from Sigel. It ended up a squeaker as Mike tied it up at 7-7 yet Earl closed it out at 8-7. Again, the player’s mic’d made it a blast. Straight Pool was the game that all thought Mike had his best chance at turning the tables on Earl.

    26th Annual Allen Hopkins Super Billiards Expo by Ricky Bryant he 26th annual Allen Hopkins Super Billiards Expo, SBX, was held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in The Oaks, Pennsylvania, which is in the Valley Forge area. This was the fifth time the event was at this venue, and keeps Timproving. The four day event was Thursday April 12th through Sunday April 15th. There were two Pro events, Open 10-Ball and Women’s 9-Ball. There was one Pro Arena for these events, which was a paid venue with VIP and General seating, all of the other events were open to general admission. Again this year the Expo had over a hundred great vendors, American Cuemakers Association Show and the TAP League Rally in the Valley, plus the following Pool and Billiards events: Pro Pool Diamond Events: Open 10-Ball, Women’s Open 9-Ball Professor Q Ball 3-Cushion Qualifier for Nationals – Challenge Matches Open Pro-Am Bar Box 9-Ball Amateur Events: Open Amateur, Women’s Division, Seniors Division, Super Seniors Division Juniors 17 & Under and Juniors 12 & Under - Pennsylvania Juniors Championships The Pro-Am, Amateur Events and Junior events had almost 1900 entries and a waiting list of players that wanted to play. As with all SBX events a player can enter multiple events but due to time constraints if there is a conflict the player will select the match to forfeit. Missing this year from the Pro events was the 1-Pocket event which had been a fan favorite. The Pro Events were directed by Tournament Director Doug Ennis and Frank Del Pizzo.
