BENEFICE MAGAZINE – September 2017 Edition for the Parishes of Herriard with Winslade, Tunworth, Upton Grey and Weston Patrick

Letter from the Benefice Ministry Team

There’s a famous passage from the Bible which has made its way into popular culture through prose and song: There is a time for everything, And a season for every activity under the heavens (Ecclesiastes 3:1) I often think of these words in the autumn, when we enter into the season of harvest. The fields turn a rich, golden amber as bales of hay are gathered together. Apple trees are laden with fruit and gardens change into the vivid hues of autumn. Produce stalls are abundant with the fresh fruit and vegetables we associate with the season of harvest. There’s a coolness in the air. And we also find ourselves getting ready for a harvest of human activity – a return to school, sports activities, music groups, volunteering, new projects at work – the list can seem endless. Our communities have woken up from their summer siestas, reinvigorated and ready to get back to the busyness of life. As your village Churches in this benefice, we are also gearing up for a busy autumn. In the pages of this magazine, you’ll see a host of activities in your local churches which are geared for all age groups, from babies to the elderly. These are the traditional autumn activities which bring villagers together to celebrate the season. Our Sunday services range from traditional to informal and our talks aim to engage with issues that mean something to you in our community. This autumn, we’ll be starting a sermon series on how to live a good and beautiful life, through a study of the gospel of Matthew. The series promises to be enlightening and also relevant to our daily lives. Why not come along and listen to some practical advice for living your life? And join us in celebrating the abundance of God’s creation in the season of harvest and plenty. I wish you all a harvest of love and peace. Rev. Mary-Beth Hawrish Long Sutton and South Warnborough

The Great Fire of London The people of London who had managed to survive the Great Plague in 1665 must have thought that the year 1666 could only be better, and couldn’t possibly be worse! But sadly a new disaster was to befall them in 1666. A fire started on September 2nd in the King’s bakery in Pudding Lane near London Bridge. Fires were quite a common occurrence in those days and were soon put out. However that summer had been very hot and there had been no rain for weeks, so consequently the wooden houses and buildings were tinder dry. The fire soon took hold: 300 houses quickly collapsed and the strong east wind spread the flames further, jumping from house to house. The fire swept through the warren of streets lined with houses, the upper stories of which almost touched across the narrow winding lanes. Efforts to bring the fire under control by using buckets quickly failed. Panic began to spread through the city. As the fire raged, people tried to leave the city and poured down to the River Thames in an attempt to escape by boat. By the 4th September half of London was in flames. The King himself joined the fire fighters, passing buckets of water to them in an attempt to quell the flames, but the fire raged on. As a last resort gunpowder was used to blow up houses that lay in the path of the fire, and so create an even bigger fire-break, but the sound of the explosions started rumours that a French invasion was taking place…. even more panic!! As refugees poured out of the city, St. Paul’s Cathedral was caught in the flames. The lead on the roof melted and poured down onto the street like a river, and the great cathedral collapsed. Luckily the Tower of London escaped the inferno, and eventually the fire was brought under control. By 6th September it had been extinguished altogether. Only one fifth of London was left standing! Virtually all the civic buildings had been destroyed as well as 13,000 private dwellings, but amazingly only six people had died. Hundreds of thousands of people 6 were left homeless. Eighty-nine parish churches, the Guildhall, numerous other public buildings, jails, markets and fifty-seven halls were now just burnt-out shells. The loss of property was estimated at£5 to £7 million. King Charles gave the fire fighters a generous purse of 100 guineas to share between them. Not for the last time would a nation honour its brave fire fighters. In the immediate aftermath of the fire, a poor demented French watchmaker called (Lucky) Hubert, confessed to starting the fire deliberately: justice was swift and he was rapidly hanged. It was sometime later however that it was realised that he couldn’t have started it, as he was not in at the time! Although the Great Fire was a catastrophe, it did cleanse the city. The overcrowded and disease-ridden streets were destroyed and a new London emerged. A monument was erected in Pudding Lane on the spot where the fire began and can be seen today, where it is a reminder of those terrible days in September 1666.

FROM THE VILLAGES

Local Police Report Dear Residents, On the night of July 25th/26th several metal containers were broken into at Hoddington Farm, Upton Grey. This was around 3.30am. I ask if anyone has any CCTV that may be of use in the village to please have a check in case the criminals were in the village beforehand. We are looking for a light-coloured Subaru with 3/4 men inside. In the same area on 1st August during the day a green quad bike was stolen from a local farm. Again if anyone saw a vehicle or anyone acting suspiciously in the Tile Barn area please give me a call direct. Locally poachers are suspected to have been responsible for criminal damage to growing crops at and several padlocks were cropped on field gates at Nutley, both crimes being on the night of July 26th and 27th. Also in the past month I have had to contact three people on my area to make enquiries about them being subject to theft and criminal damage as none had reported being a victim of crime and I heard from 7 other sources. This is totally wrong; I should not be calling people and telling them they are a victim of crime because they are not telling me. I do understand the belief that ‘Police aren’t interested’, ‘They don’t do anything anyway’, ‘Can’t get through on 101’, ‘What’s the point?’ Well the point is this: You and I know that rural crime is on the increase, police resources are stretched – BUT (and it is a big BUT) how are rural areas such as these ever going to keep/get a strong Police presence if people simply cannot be bothered to report crime on their property? If you have an area where no crime is reported, people outside that area look and see no crime records so assume there is no crime, because on paper there is not. If there is no crime, why, when resources are tight, have a police presence? You are lucky you can report crime to me on my numbers direct and, yes, I too may not be able to do anything, but at least I can record that it has happened and show to the outside world that rural crime does happen in our area. I myself had to ring 101 the other day (and, yes, it took me 12 minutes to get through!). The operator said ‘how bizarre that a member of the public can call a Policeman direct or at home – totally unheard of!’ Well, I am interested in all crime on my patch, so please if you are a victim of crime ring it in – report ALL crime however small. It may well link in with similar crime patterns or your neighbour may have seen something or have CCTV, so please if you are a victim of crime – report it. We may not detect the offender but we need to know what is happening in all our communities. Slightly further afield on Sunday 13th August, I had reports of a cold-calling door-to-door salesman offering household cleaning items for sale from a large bag and saying he had just been released from prison (which he had not). He was then rude when residents declined to purchase items. I found the man concerned and subsequently I have reported him for summons to court. I ask residents to please consider carefully whether they should purchase anything from the doorstep, and please report cold-callers to 101 or, if in our area, to me direct. May I also ask residents to check their vehicle lights as the evenings are now closing in again. Likewise please keep lights and a radio on in the darker evenings if you go out. Many thanks as always Andy Reid, Police Constable 3746, Rural Beat Officer, Police Office, Preston Candover, DD: 01256:389050, HQ: 101, Mob: 07768:776844 Email: andrew.reid@.pnn.police.uk 8

Window on the Past – Upton Grey History Project An exciting new project has started to create an attractive, easily accessible and interactive website to make available a treasure trove of pictures, documents and objects from Upton Grey’s past. The starting point is the fabulous collection of literally thousands of pictures, documents and nuggets of information which have been collected by Trevor Hart over the past thirty years. The aim of Window on the Past is to make all this information freely available in easily searchable bite- sized pieces. For example, you might want to know about the history of your own house, or Upton Grey’s role in the Civil War, or what village life was like in Victorian times. Using the Explore facility, you will be able to dip in or dive in and follow your interest wherever it takes you. But more than that, Window on the Past will enable anyone with more information, pictures or documents to add it to the website, which will be professionally designed and structured with a database engine in the background. The website will also showcase some of the material with interesting articles, picture galleries etc. If you would like to help or just find out more about the project please contact Patrick Symington on [email protected] or 07867 537373 or. Or just drop me an email to show your support if you think it’s a good idea and something you will use!

Upton Grey Summer Village Flower Show – Volunteers needed This year’s flower show was another excellent village day with the weather, attendance, entries and attractions all being good. The committee have again worked hard to make a splendid day for all. However, many of us have been undertaking various fairly strenuous tasks for decades and, unless people come forward to help or to join the committee, then it is in doubt whether the show can continue. This would be very sad and a great loss to the community, but with some helpers being in their seventies and a few in their eighties(!), the writing on the wall is clear. So please, if you have recently moved into the area, or if you could be available to help out (on just a handful of occasions during the year) contact either myself or June Hunt to discuss how you could assist. I myself now wish to step down from the committee and chairmanship of the show at the end of the year so please contact me before I hand over. I’m sure none of us want 2017’s flower show to be the last. Peter Haynes, Chairman, 862433 10

Thanks from postman, Phil Leete I would like to say a few words via these pages to everyone in Upton Grey, especially to those who I did not get the chance to speak to in person. As you will know I have now retired as the Upton Grey postman. Over the years I have delivered to many localities, not all in the Basingstoke area. However I am very glad that my last stint was in Upton Grey. I would like to say thank you to everyone for the friendship and kindness shown to me which has made my job so much better. Thank you very much for the very generous collection presented to me at the Flower Show. This was both unexpected and overwhelming. I apologise for not saying anything publicly at the time, but I can assure you that it was really appreciated, that I am very grateful for your generosity, and also for all the kind words said to me. With all best wishes. Phil Leete

Bridge Club – Upton Grey The bridge club is always looking for new members and is a very friendly club, meeting twice a month at the Stables room Hoddington Arms at 7.30pm. If anyone is interested then please just turn up or for further details phone Peter Haynes 862433. The club is free to join and play! The next dates are as follows: Monday 25th September, Monday 9th and 23rd October, Monday 13th and 27th November. A Christmas dinner on Monday 11th at the Hoddington Arms is also arranged which generally has attendance of 20 and which, whilst not free, is considered by all to be a good fun evening and has in the past been well supported. We hope to see existing and some new members whether individual or with partners on 25th September.

Upton Grey Autumn Festival – Saturday 28th October We are holding our annual Autumn Festival at the Hoddington Arms again this year – a unique, family-orientated and highly entertaining celebration of autumn. As Halloween is close, the Hodd will be themed for Halloween again this year and everybody is encouraged to come in their Halloween outfits (we had over 3-dozen entrants last year) and judged for a magnum of champagne (first prize) after the evening’s dining. Free parking in Church Meadow, RG25 2RA. Starting at 2.00pm (prize giving at 4.00pm) in the back garden of the Hodd, we have local produce to taste and buy, conkers, apple 11 bobbing, snail races, pumpkin bowling, kids Halloween fancy dress and silent disco competitions, bouncy castle, Guy Fawkes, giant pumpkins, gourds, autumn paintings, autumn photos and lots more. Newlyn’s Farm Shop will be providing a BBQ throughout the afternoon and the Bar will be open for drinks. You can help add to the success of the afternoon by providing entries for the festival. At 6.00pm gather at The Hodd for mulled wine, church bell ringing, Jack O’Lantern procession, bonfire and professional firework display. Then back to The Hodd for the pre-bookable 2-course Festival Menu (£10 only), band, Halloween fancy dress competition and then silent disco in the heated marquee. Entry to both events is free for all kids, for adults it’s £2.00 on the gate in the afternoon, £5.00 advance tickets (£10 on the day) for the bonfire etc. (tickets from the Hodd, the Shop or Roger Clark). It’s too good to miss – go to www.uptongreyautumnfestival.co.uk for all contact, festival and competition entry details. All proceeds go to the excellent charity, St. Michael’s Hospice, who help man the afternoon’s events. Autumn Festival Gourd Painting – Saturday 21st October Children are invited to Roger and Estelle’s house (11 Weston Close, Upton Grey, RG25 2RX) at 2.30pm on Saturday 21st October to paint ornamental gourds for the best-decorated gourds competition. Free gourds and paints are provided but bring your own if you like. Don’t wear your best clothes! It would be helpful if you could telephone Roger on 862776 if you intend to come. Guy Fawkes in Upton Grey Last year we had over 3-dozen Guy Fawkes on display around the village. You can see some of them on our website: www.uptongreyautumnfestival.co.uk (click on 2016 Photo Album, and then click on Guy Fawkes 2016). So start planning your Guy Fawkes designs now and let’s see if we can beat last year’s number. At the beginning of October, straw will again be available from Newlyn’s Farm Shop. Ken & Barbie Titanic Fawkes, Quasimodo Fawkes, Penny for the Guy, PC Andy Fawkes and (hopefully) a Reverend Fawkes will be among those appearing by the end of the first week. It’s great to see the Guy Fawkes spring up around the village but if you also want to enter the Autumn Festival competition on the 28th October then you need to enter a photo of your Guy (ideally A4) by 2.00pm on the day. HERRIARD AND WINSLADE NEWS www.herriard-pc.gov.uk https://www.facebook.com/herriardexservicesclub Join ‘Herriard Village’ group on http://www.Facebook.com

Herriard Garden Club At the August meeting, members were galvanized into action towards new plans to take the club forward. This year, we have worked hard to start up a Garden Club allotment in Back Lane, starting by rotovating and making raised beds, adding soil conditioner and manure, erecting a shed and greenhouse, sowing and planting a wide selection of vegetables which have grown to epic proportions. Our next project is to put down an area of hard landscaping to keep weeds down, to do up the shed, construct compost bins and add water butts. This is a thriving and valuable space both for new and experienced gardeners who can come together at a community allotment to grow crops for the table. We will be holding a celebratory supper party in September for Garden Club members and partners who have helped out on the allotment this year. We also plan to hold a workshop on ‘Composting and mulching’ at the allotment, open to all, on Saturday November 4th at 10.00am, £5.00 including coffee and cake. 13

If interested, contact: [email protected], 07957400029. As well as meeting monthly, the club organizes tours of local gardens, meeting for social evenings and visits to other Garden Clubs for talks by visiting speakers. Next year we will be running some workshops, arranging a summer trip to a Flower Show and continuing to take part in Village events such as Open Gardens. We welcome new members to join this friendly group. If you are a keen gardener or new to gardening, find out more by contacting: [email protected], 07957400029 or [email protected] 07917 693469 Jobs for September: 1. Cut lavender flower stems off and about 2.5cm of the current year’s growth. Don’t cut into old wood. 2. Divide plants such as crocosmia that have become over crowded 3. Gather seed heads such as poppies, sweet williams, lupins, scatter seed in borders or keep until spring 4. Start to make leaf mould. Collect fallen leaves in a bag, moisten them well, add a shovel of garden soil and put holes in the bag. Keep for 1-2 years for use as a soil conditioner or mulch 5. Plant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths by the end of September 6. Plant summer flowering bulbs such as lilies, alliums and crocosmia in September and October 7. Lawns- scarify, aerate and top dress with loam sand and compost. Use an autumn lawn feed. Sow grass seed on bare patches. 8. Herbaceous perennials- cut back dead and dying foliage or leave until spring in cold areas to provide some protection 9. Turn the compost heap to introduce air 10. When removing perennial weeds from the soil, it is important to remove all the root. Don’t let annual weeds flower and produce seed.
