February 2020 Puka-Puka Parade Addendum
FEBRUARY 2020 PUKA-PUKA PARADE ADDENDUM All the stuff that couldn’t fit in the print edition of the PPP SAVE THE DATE: HAWAII PREMIERE OF THE DOCUMENTARY SAKURA AND PEARLS: HEALING FROM WORLD WAR II IN MAY 2020 AT THE CLUBHOUSE https://gkhunter.com/movie-sakura-pearls/ Please mark your calendar for Saturday, May 2, 2020 when the new documentary Sakura and Pearls: Healing from World War II by filmmaker GEORGE KAMANA HUNTER will make its Hawaii debut at the 100th Clubhouse. There will be two showings of the film that day, the first at 2:00 pm and the second at 7:00 pm. This event will be co-sponsored by the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans and the Matsunaga Institute for Peace. The synopsis of the documentary from the film’s website is as follows: “In 2016, Japanese PRIME MINISTER SHINZO ABE and U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA met in two historic meetings at Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor to honor the World War II casualties. It took 75 years for sitting leaders from both Japan and the U.S.A to meet at the Atomic Dome and the U.S.S Arizona Memorial. The image of former U.S. President Obama hugging the crying Hiroshima Atomic Bomb survivor, SHIGEAKI MORI, made the cover of the New York Times, Japan Today, and countless other newspapers around the world. This powerful exchange of respect still reverberates today. (Photo on top of filmmaker Hunter who interviewed Shigeaki Mori after Mori embraced former U.S. President Barack Obama at the Hiroshima memorial service. -

American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Memorial Society 3156 Myers Lane - Makanda, Illinois 62958 - [email protected] STATEMENT FOR THE RECORD to the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee and House Veterans' Affairs Committee Joint Hearing To Receive Legislative Presentations of Veterans Service Organizations By Jan Thompson President American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Memorial Society 18 March 2021 AMERICAN PRISONERS OF WAR OF JAPAN TIME FOR A CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL Chairmen Tester and Takano, Ranking Members Moran and Bost, and Members of the Senate and House Veterans Affairs Committees, thank you for allowing us to describe how Congress can meet the concerns of veterans of World War II’s Pacific Theater. The American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Memorial Society (ADBC-MS) represent the POWs of Japan, their families, and descendants, as well as scholars, researchers, and archivists. Our goal is to preserve the history of the American POW experience in the Pacific and to teach future generations of the POWs’ sacrifice, courage, determination, and faith—the essence of the American spirit. This year, 2021, is the 80th anniversary of the first American battles of World War II. I testify today to encourage your efforts to remember the American men and women who became POWs of Japan after fighting the first desperate battles of WWII in the Pacific and suffering some of the War’s worst consequences. Nearly 30 percent did not return home. For all, the home front was their third battle--after surviving warfare in the Pacific and enduring atrocities as a POW. Forced to sign gag orders about the horrors they witnessed and unable to explain the after-effects of torture, abuse, starvation, and trauma, the POWs of Japan first focused, as do today’s veterans, on obtaining healthcare, disability benefits, survivor benefits, caregiver support, mental health access, and education. -
