Raised in Worcestershire, Deb found herself becoming fascinated with the idea of performing music. Her eldest brother John had joined Led Zeppelin when Deborah was just five years old. When Deb became a teenager, she would often sit and jam with her nephew Jason who was only a few years younger. They would write their own material and perform for family and friends. • Examining Rhythmic and Metric Practices in Led Zeppelin's Musical
Popular Music (2008) Volume 27/1. Copyright © 2008 Cambridge University Press, pp. 53–76 doi:10.1017/S0261143008001487 Printed in the United Kingdom Examining rhythmic and metric practices in Led Zeppelin’s musical style JOHN BRACKETT University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City, UT 84112-0030, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this essay, I examine how aspects of rhythm and metre play a fundamental role in shaping and defining Led Zeppelin’s musical style. At the same time, I will show how Led Zeppelin was able to modify, manipulate, and develop pre-existing musical models and forms through various rhythmic and metric strategies. Comparative analyses will be used in an effort to show how Led Zeppelin’s flexible conception of rhythm and metre enabled the band to put their own stylistic ‘stamp’ on (i) specific musical genres (‘The Crunge’ and the song’s relation to James Brown-style funk), (ii) their riff constructions (‘Black Dog’ in relation to Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Oh Well’), and (iii) their cover versions (‘Dazed and Confused’). Drawing upon my analytical points, I re-visit the complex issues that persist regarding the possibility that Led Zeppelin even has an ‘original’ or ‘unique’ style given their often overt reliance upon earlier musical models and forms. Therefore, in my conclusion, I argue that the development of any artist or group’s individual style necessarily involves the ability to assimilate and transform pre-existing musical features – features such as rhythm and metre – in novel ways and where issues relating to musical style intersect with influence.

My colleague and fellow scribe Tony Wilson had secured the precious black vinyl LP and dropped it onto the turntable, awaiting my reaction. We were immediately transfixed by the brash, bold sounds that fought their way out of the lo- fi speakers – Robert Plant’s screaming vocals, the eerie Hammond organ sounds of John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page’s supreme guitar mastery. But amid the kaleidoscope of impressions, the drums were the primary element that set pulses racing. We marveled at the sheer audacity, the sense of authority, the spatial awareness present on every track. Within moments, John Bonham’s cataclysmic bass drum triplets and roaring snare rolls had signaled a new era of rock drumming. The first time I saw Bonham up close was in December 1968, at The Marquee Club on Soho’s Wardour Street. While The Marquee has long held a mythical status in the rich history of the London rock scene – hosting early appearances by such legendary bands as The Who and The Rolling Stones – it was actually a dark and rather cramped facility with a tiny stage that fronted an even stuffier dressing room.

SONG MAIN PLAY MODES Songs will play continuously throughout the playtime of a ball. Songs will be divided into “sections” (verse, chorus, solo, bridge, etc.) and each of those sections have their own rules that dictate which shots are available. Song Scoring All of the following go into the song shot values: ● Base Song Mode Scoring ● Number of songs completed ○ A song is considered completed if you reach enough gold records (adjustable, default of 5). You can see this on the back panel as a solid light. ● Number of songs gone platinum ● You can see this on the back panel as a pulsing light ● Number of song shots made during this “section” ● Number of song shots made during this song ● Number of song shots made during this ball ● Number of song shots made throughout the game ● Record sales made during this song ● Record sales made throughout the game Record Sales There are 3 ways to earn record sales. ● Switches ● Time the ball is in play (not trapped on a playfield, with recent playfield activity) ● Song mode shots Gold records are earned after enough record sales are generated. Earn enough gold records in a song to complete the song where it will be lit solid on the backboard (if playing on an LE/Premium). Completing a song will boost all song values going forward and advance you towards lighting “Top of the Charts”. Platinum records are earned after enough gold records (more than just the amount to “complete” a song). Going platinum on a song will make the light on the backboard pulse, count towards Top of the Charts Bonus, and work towards “? Multiball”.
