View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by New Bulgarian University Scholar Electronic Repository THRACIA XX GLUHITE KAMANI: OLD qUESTIONS AND NEW APPROACHES Georgi Nekhrizov, Lynn E. Roller, Maya Vassileva, Julia Tzvetkova, Nadezhda Kecheva The site of Gluhite Kamani is located in the most northeastern part of the Rhodope Mountains in southeastern Bulgaria. It is situated on a mountain ridge, to the east and below the peak of Sveta Marina (708.6 m), one of the most prominent peaks of the Gorata ridge in the Eastern Rhodopes. A medieval for- tress and a church are located on the peak, along with traces of habitation from the first millennium BC. The area is rich in archaeological sites (Fig. 1). Further east on the same ridge are several other sites with similar characteristics: the Mezek fortresses and Kurt Kale (on Sheynovets peak); nearby are two Thracian tombs (Велков 1937; Аладжов 1997: 48, 161-163; Филов 1937). Also to the east, in the region of the village of Valche Pole and around the rocks of Kush Kaya there is a large Late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age1 and Roman site, par- tially excavated (Аладжов 1997: 49; Попов 2009). Further to the east lies the Kovan Kaya cliff with many niches carved on it; this is the easternmost site of this group (Аладжов 1997: 4). A number of archaeological sites have also been registered to the north, west and southwest. The highest concentration of sites is in the vicinity of the town of Madzharovo (Аладжов 1997: 26-30, 57, 73-77, 90, 142-146, 148-149, 198-199, 292-301; Nekhrizov 2000; Нехризов 2004). -

Fossil Gastropods Campanile Lachesis Bayan, 1870 from the Upper Eocene of the Eastern Rhodopes (Bulgaria)

The subject of this study is the description of eight specimens of fossil gastropods Campanile lachesis Bayan, 1870, family Campanilidae, from the fund of the Regional Museum of History in Kardzhali. They were found in the area of the village of Gorna Krepost, Kardzhali Municipality, at the eastern foot of the Archeological Complex Perperikon, in the upper Eocene (Priabonian) limestone layers of the so-called Beli Plast Rhyodacite Complex. The paleoecological traits of the present fauna give ground to infer that this was a very shallow reefal environment with a rocky substrate sandy bottom, overgrown with algae, and the water was warm, with normal salinity. Eastern Rhodopes) and Their Relation to Recent Seismic Activity
Geoarchaeology and Archaeomineralogy (Eds. R. I. Kostov, B. Gaydarska, M. Gurova). 2008. Proceedings of the International Conference, 29-30 October 2008 Sofia, Publishing House “St. Ivan Rilski”, Sofia, 295-298. FAULTING AND ROCK DEFORMATIONS ESTABLISHED AT THE RUINS OF PERPERIKON (EASTERN RHODOPES) AND THEIR RELATION TO RECENT SEISMIC ACTIVITY Nikolai Dobrev Geological institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 1113 Sofia; [email protected] ABSTRACT. The ancient town of Perperikon (Eastern Rhodopes) is situated just in the epicentre of the M4.5 February 20, 2006 earthquake. The focal mechanism shows a pure sinistral movement along the main fault with direction 135°, and a dextral slip of 55° along the transversal faults. The earthquake caused rockfalling at Perperikon. The ruins reveal contemporary displacements along the main fault directions determined by the focal mechanism. Some displacements could be connected to other seismic events that have occurred in the past, as well as to a slow tectonic creep. Seismic activity evidences should be found through more detail studies including use of permanent monitoring tools. Introduction field study have already been published (Glavcheva et al., 2006; On February 20, 2006, at 17:20 GMT an earthquake with Dobrev et al., 2007). During the field studies the researchers magnitude 4.5 was recorded by the National Seismological visited the ruins of the ancient town of Perperikon, located at 1.5 Centre of Bulgaria (NOTSSI, Geophysical Institute of Bulgar- km NW of Murgovo. Parts of the ruins were cleaned during the ian Academy of Sciences). The hypocenter was situated at archaeological studies performed in the recent years. -

It is part of a study devoted to the geographic (territorial) distribution of the main immovable cultural and historical objects of this type, which are of interest for the development of tourism in Bulgaria. Author information: Keywords: Mariya Grozeva megaliths, immovable cultural and historical Assist. Prof., PhD monuments, rock-cut cult objects, cultural and National Institute of Geophysics, historical tourist locations, cultural and Geodesy and Geography – historical heritage. Bulgarian Academy of Sciences [email protected] Bulgaria ntroduction As a result of its crossroad geographic situation, as a shortest way and “bridge” I between Europe and Asia, the Balkan Peninsula has been inhabited since antiquity. In prehistoric times, the first centers of culture have arisen here, and later we have the brilliant examples of Ancient Greece and the Thracian civilization. As one of the oldest settled parts of the European continent, on the territory of present-day Bulgaria have emerged cultures and civilizations that have made a significant contribution to the development of European and world civilization. All of them, regardless of their today's assessment, have objectively left numerous and varied traces, which are of interest not only to specialists but also attract many tourists.
