It was November 3rd, and a new blanket of snow had just fallen in the valleys and mountains of Utah. For JT, this was what he had been waiting for all year. His morning started early, around 3 a.m he loaded his hounds and went to start trying to cut a track. About two hours in, JT cut a fresh lion track but it was a small female so he kept searching. If he couldn’t cut a bigger tom track, he would just have to come back and run the female. After hours of searching he finally ran into the track of a big tom he knew well; he called him Old-Three-Toes. Two years earlier, he had ran this cat and it had killed two of his best dogs, JJ and Junior. JT put tracking collars on his dogs and led them to the lion track. JT knew that the tom had been through within the last hour due to the way the dogs were running it. Watching on his GPS, he could see exactly what his dogs were doing. He knew it was going to be a long day when he saw the lion was heading to a canyon known as Devil's Den. Many houndsmen had lost dogs in there, but JT couldn't do anything to help it now. He unloaded his mule and set out to find his dogs. When he reached the rim of the canyon, he couldn't hear or see any of his dogs. The GPS wasn't picking them up, and JT had a bad feeling. After hours of no luck, it was getting dark so he had to head home without his dogs. Needless to say it was a long, sleepless night. The next day he got back to the canyon at first light. Sitting quietly, he listened for his dogs. Way down in the bottom, he heard a faint bay from his lead dog, Rock. Being so far away he could barely hear them at all. JT decided it was now or never, so he tied his mule up and headed off the steep, rocky face of the mountain towards his dogs. As he got farther and farther down the hill, he could hear his dogs better. Then it all went quiet, as if someone had just shut off all sound. JT got nervous so he called one of his good buddies, Zac, to see if he would come help find his dogs. When Zac got to JT, it was about 2 o’clock in the afternoon, and still JT had no clue where his dogs were. JT and Zac continued to the bottom of Devil's Den. That's when all heck broke loose. They heard the dogs, but there was something different going on. The dogs’ barks sounded like they were echoing. That's when JT realized that his dogs had chased the cat into an old mine shaft. When the two arrived at the mine shaft they saw how deep it really was. JT made the decision to go in after his dogs and try to get the cat, but if his plans failed he would just run him another day. He could hear the dogs fighting the lion in the back of the mine so he hurried in to try to get to his dogs. With just a bad flashlight and an old revolver, he got to the dogs just in time to see Old-Three-Toes almost get one of his dogs. They were all still alive and had Old-Three-Toes bayed up. Taking careful aim, JT pulled the trigger and finally ended the two-year quest for the lion that had killed his best two dogs. The cat ended up being nine feet long and just under two hundred pounds. It was the hunt of a lifetime that neither JT nor Zac would ever forget.
