Since its beginning in 1957, Cookson Hills has offered help, hope, and healing to abused and neglected children and worked with their families to break the cycle of abuse, neglect, dependency, and failure. Set on more than 1,000 acres in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in rural northeastern Oklahoma, Cookson Hills provides a rustic and rewarding retreat for children requiring out-of-home care. When families have exhausted the resources of their local church, school, and community and still face a crisis that threatens to overcome the families’ ability to sustain itself, the most likely place to turn to is government-run foster care or the juvenile justice system. Cookson Hills provides an alternative to those families by offering residential care for their child in a family-modeled environment, individualized Christian education, vocational training, spiritual formation programs, and specialized therapeutic services.

In the mid-1950’s a church school class of the Methodist Church gathered groceries to help low-income families in Pawhuska. Soon other congregations joined this ministry of compassion. As the program grew, the Ministerial Alliance became the sponsor, and a building was acquired to facilitate the distribution. Each Tuesday and Thursday morning, any family living in Osage County may come to Christ’s Cupboard to receive food. Short term-emergency assistance is emphasized, though ministers can grant additional help, beyond the usual four times a year guideline. Most families facing food insecurity have limited income and experience some type of emergency. Christ’s Cupboard becomes a very appreciated helping-hand. They consistently serve more adults than children and many elderly have “out of work” family members living in the home. The all volunteer staff has a reputation of helping people and of being good stewards. The support of the community is tremendous.

Neighbors Along The Line 5000 Charles Page Blvd. Tulsa, OK 74127 Tulsa County Pantry Contact Info: Shannon Chambers, 918-584-1111

Neighbors Along the line began in 1976. They have four main programs: food pantry, medical clinic, community activities, and the literacy program. However, they partner with W.I.C., counseling and recovery services, Legal Aid, THD, Triad, Caring Van, N.A. and others to provide additional services to their clients. Their primary service area includes a five-square mile area within the 74127 zip code, in which a large portion of the residents are classified as low income. Although some of their programs are restricted to low-income clients, their medical clinic and literacy programs are not. They are a staff of four full-time & part-time employees. Their mission is: “Neighbors Along The Line meets basic needs and provides opportunities for development and increased inde- pendence.” Their food pantry has grown significantly over the last few years and now serves a larger portion of the community. Also, they’ve expanded their services to incorporate more community oriented activities such as life skills classes, cooking work- shops, and senior art classes. They inventory their food items and allow clients the option of picking food from a menu list. This helps to narrow the focus of the items that the client will actually use for food in their homes vs. receiving items that they may not eat. They also help every client to their automobile with the groceries to go the extra mile in providing great service.
