In this jar was a diary, with directions for finding other diaries. The diaries were written by the Sonderkommando, inmates charged with disposing of the dead, which they did. But as they worked, they recorded their deeds, so that the dead they incinerated would leave behind a residue of writing: "At 10:00 in the morning, I have just burned my parents," reports one diary.' At 10:10: "I have just burned my wife." And finally, at 10:20: "I have just burned my children."'2 Perhaps some inmates accepted this grisly assignment in hopes of saving themselves, but most must have known they would last two months more at most, under conditions in which only death offered mercy. -

NUNAWADING MILITARY HISTORY GROUP MINI NEWSLETTER No. 17 The Attack on Mers-el-Kebir 3rd July 1940 “It is impossible for us, your comrades up to now, to allow your fine ships to fall into the power of the German enemy. We are determined to fight on until the end, and if we win, as we think we shall, we shall never forget that France was our Ally, that our interests are the same as hers, and that our common enemy is Germany. Should we conquer we solemnly de- clare that we shall restore the greatness and territory of France. For this purpose we must make sure that the best ships of the French Navy are not used against us by the common foe. In these circumstances, His Maj- esty's Government have instructed me to demand that the French Fleet now at Mers el Kebir and Oran shall act in accordance with one of the following alternatives; (a) Sail with us and continue the fight until victory against the Germans. (b) Sail with reduced crews under our control to a British port. The re- duced crews would be repatriated at the earliest moment. If either of these courses is adopted by you we will restore your ships to France at the conclusion of the war or pay full compensation if they are damaged meanwhile. (c) Alternatively, if you feel bound to stipulate that your ships should not be used against the Germans lest they break the Armistice, then sail them with us with reduced crews to some French port in the West In- dies—Martinique for instance—where they can be demilitarised to our satisfaction, or perhaps be entrusted to the United States and remain safe until the end of the war, the crews being repatriated. -

Bell An abstract of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in French Literature in the Department of Romance Languages in the Graduate School of Duke University 2008 Copyright by Mary Ann LaMarca 2008 Abstract The moral and ethical choices made during the Nazi Occupation of France would echo for generations: they served as a source of pain and pride when the French sought to rebuild their national identity after the ignominy of the defeat, and acted as the foundation for the intellectual legacy on which post-war life stands. In my dissertation I examine the diverse trajectory of two writers, Jean- Paul Sartre and Jean Giraudoux, during the Occupation by focusing on their dramatic works. During this period, no writer could legally exercise his vocation and receive compensation without submitting to certain legalities designed to monitor the content of artistic output. -

Heroes and Villains: The Effects of Combat Heroism on Autocratic Values and Nazi Collaboration in France* Julia Cag´e1, Anna Dagorret2, Pauline Grosjean3, and Saumitra Jha4 1Sciences Po Paris and CEPR 2,4Stanford Graduate School of Business 3University of New South Wales September 9, 2021 Abstract Can heroes legitimize strongly-proscribed and repugnant political behaviors? We exploit the purposefully arbitrary rotation of French regiments to measure the legitimizing effects of heroic credentials. 53% of French line regiments happened to rotate under a specific general, Philippe P´etain, during the pivotal WWI battle of Verdun (1916). Using recently- declassified intelligence data on 85, 389 individuals matched to 34,942 municipalities, we find that the home municipalities of regiments serving under P´etain at Verdun raised 7- 10% more Nazi collaborators during the P´etain-led Vichy regime (1940-44). The effects are similar across joining Fascist parties, German forces, paramilitaries that hunted Jews and the Resistance, and collaborating economically. Collecting novel electoral data, we show that these municipalities also increasingly vote for right-wing parties between the wars, but not before WWI. We argue these results reflect the complementary role of the heroes of Verdun in legitimizing and diffusing the authoritarian values of their former leader. Well-known landmark events , y E during this period include the bombing of Gernika; the mass exodus of d x a Basques, Catalans, and other Spanish Republicans from Spain following i y the triumph of General Francisco Franco’s forces; France’s sudden l e defeat in 1940, its subsequent occupation by Germany, and the rise of L , i J French resistance; the Allied invasion of France and the difficult process f u of liberation. Set within the broader historical context of these events, e , s the contributions to this volume focus on the experiences of ordinary t 1 i people who endured those difficult times. The people who are at the 9 c heart of this book include Basque priests who supported their homeland 3 e 6 , against the Francoist “crusade”; ordinary British, German, and Free - 1 French soldiers; Basque and Catalan refugees; the American newspaper- a 9 n reading public; foreign resisters to German occupation; Breton and 4 d French collaborationists and their accusers; German documentary 5 filmmakers; the dispossessed Jews of Paris; and French housewives who adjusted to a brave new postwar world. Throughout the book, the authors explore the themes of dispossession, disillusionment with the liberation, divisiveness in postwar society, and the permanence of exile even after the exile’s return.
