Mendelssohn’s String Symphony was written in a year the youthful Felix Mendelssohn’s family vacationed in the beautiful mountains of Switzerland. Initially dark, the symphony con- cludes optimistically, much like these past months. We feature two works, dark to bright, by Atlanta composer Carlos Simon: Elegy: A Cry from the Grave and The Warmth of Other Suns. The concert con- cludes with Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, music first sketched during a visit to the sunny southern countryside of that memorable Italian city. 2021-2022 SEASON Iris Orchestra Iris 4 NOVEMBER 20, 2021 GEN-Z CELLIST Zlatomir Fung, cello Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme in A Major, op.33 Mozart: Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550 The first American in four decades and youngest musician ever to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition Cello Division, Zlatomir Fung is poised to become one of the preeminent cellists of our time. Astounding audiences with his boundless virtuos- ity and exquisite sensitivity, this 21-year-old has already proven him- self to be a star among the next generation of world-class musicians. We had to wait an extra nine months to bring him to GPAC, but the wait will be worth it as he joins Iris for this much-anticipated evening beginning with Tchaikovsky’s sparkling Rococo Variations and closing with Mozart’s landmark Symphony No. 40 in G minor. 2021-2022 SEASON Iris Orchestra Iris 6 JANUARY 29, 2022 CONDUCTING PIANIST Jeffrey Kahane, piano & conductor Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat Major, K.482 Shaw, Caroline: Entr’acte Haydn: Symphony No. 92 in G Major, "Oxford” Equally at home at the piano or on the podium, Jeffrey Kahane is recognized around the world for his mastery of a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach and Mozart to the music of our time. On this program, we meet Kahane first as player-conductor, leading Mozart’s Concerto No. 22 in E-flat from the keyboard, a traditional practice in Mozart’s era. More traditional in our time, he leads from the podium as conductor in Haydn’s Symphony No. 92, “Oxford.” Tucked betwixt these two classic works is Caroline Shaw’s 2011 Entr’acte (perfectly named after the interval between two acts of a play). This is a pro- gram to leave you entranced and wanting more. 2021-2022 SEASON Iris Orchestra Iris 8 MARCH 5, 2022 IN ALL A concert honoring the life TIME of Peter Formanek Inon Barnatan, piano Alon Goldstein, piano Fesjian, Cara: Iris Orchestra Commission Mozart: Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major, No. 10, K.365 Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 in E minor, op.95, “From the New World” Two heavy hitters in the classical music realm join Iris Orchestra in March. Israeli pianists Inon Barnatan and Alon Goldstein have each performed with Iris in seasons past: this commemorative concert doubles the impact by bringing both as they band together to perform Mozart’s delightful Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major. The piece will be preceded by a work commissioned in memory of Peter Formanek, a passionate sup- porter of Iris whose passing in 2020 marks a deep loss. In this new, post- COVID world, the program will appropriately conclude with a work that was one of Peter’s favorites: Dvořák’s New World Symphony. “There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is 2021-2022 SEASON Iris Orchestra Iris unique” - Martha Graham 10 APRIL 23, 2022 WHERE PAST & FUTURE GATHER Awadagin Pratt, piano Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1, op. 25 “Classical” Montgomery, Jessie: Iris Orchestra co-commission Leshnoff: Score Beethoven: Symphony No. 8 in F Major, op.93 The final program puts the pandemic season in the past by taking up works we had intended to, and now are able to, bring to the stage. The program opens with Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1, the “Classical,” his contemporary take on the style of Haydn, originally scheduled to open the 2020 season. The concert continues with two commissioned works: composer and violinist Jessie Montgomery’s work for solo piano and orchestra is inspired by a T. S. Elliot poem (referenced in this concert’s title). “Score” is a tribute to Iris’ past twenty years from longtime Iris friend Jonathan Leshnoff. Finally, Iris Orchestra’s 22nd orchestral season comes to a triumphant close with 2021-2022 SEASON Iris Orchestra Iris Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8. 12 What makes Iris Unique?
