Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. This information is crucial for the conservation management of the butterfly fauna in Sri Lanka. Key words: conservation, crops, larval food plants (LFPs), pests, plant-butterfly combination. ABSTRACT The butterflies Byblia ilithyia (Nymphalidae), Pieris canidia (Pieridae) and Azanus jesous (Lycaenidae) and the day-flying moth, Nyctemera adversata (Erebidae) are oligophagous. Previously, only B. ilithyia has been reported to be occurring in this region while the other three species are being reported for the first time from this region. The larval host plants include Jatropha gossypiifolia and Tragia involucrata for B. ilithyia, Brassica oleracea var. oleracea and B. oleracea var. botrytis for P. canidia, and Acacia auriculiformis for Azanus jesous. The nectar plants include Tragia involucrata, Euphorbia hirta and Jatropha gossypiifolia for B. ilithyia, Premna latifolia and Cleome viscosa for P. canidia, Lagascea mollis, Tridax procumbens and Digera muricata for A. jesous and Bidens pilosa for 275 N. adversata. The study recommends extensive field investigations to find out more larval plants and nectar plants for each Page lepidopteran species now reported. -

The pattern of butterfly abundance and species richness are studied in wild (forest, scrub and grassland) and human-impacted (garden, plantation and grassland) areas in the 190-hectare campus of SGB Amravati University, Amravati, Maharastra, India. A total of 52 butterfly species belonging to Hesperiidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae and Nymphalidae families were recorded in five areas (biotopes). Species abundance rose from the beginning of the monsoon (June-July) and reached a peak in early winter (August-November). A decline in species abundance was observed from late winter (December-January) and continued up to the end of summer (May). The number of species within biotopes varied from 23 to 33; 17 species were noticeably absent in the disturbed and human-impacted sites (garden, plantation and grassland) and there was no occurrence of unique species in moderately disturbed areas comparable to those of less disturbed wild areas. On the basis of biotope occurrence, 67% of butterfly species were clas- sified as disturbance-adaptable (occurring in all biotopes) and 33% as disturbance avoiders (restricted to wild areas such as forest, scrub and undisturbed areas elsewhere). -

Tara and Madhvi Gupta Department of Zoology, University of Jammu Jammu-180,006, India *Corresponding author: Anu Bala Abstract The present article incorporates detailed field observations of family Pieridae in Jammu region at different altitudes during spring, summer and autumn seasons of 2012-2013. The study revealed that 13 species of butterflies belonging to 10 genera of family Pieridae exist in the study area. Most members of Family Pieridae are white or yellow. Pieridae is a large family of butterflies with about 76 genera containing approximately 1,100 species mostly from tropical Africa and Asia. Keywords :Butterflies, India, Jammu, Pieridae. Introduction Jammu and Kashmir is the northernmost state of India. It consists of the district of Bhaderwah, Doda, Jammu, Kathua, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Samba and Udhampur. Most of the area of the region is hilly and Pir Panjal range separates it from the Kashmir valley and part of the great Himalayas in the eastern districts of Doda and Kishtwar. The main river is Chenab. Jammu borders Kashmir to the north, Ladakh to the east and Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the south. In east west, the line of control separates Jammu from the Pakistan region called POK. The climate of the region varies with altitude. The order Lepidoptera contains over 19,000 species of butterflies and 100,000 species of moths worldwide. -

Abstract: The life history of the Peacock pansy butterfly, Junonia almana and larval performance in terms of food consumption and utilization, and the length of life cycle on its host plant Ruellia tuberosa are described for the first time. The study was conducted during 2008 at Visakhapatnam (17o 42' N and 82 18' E), South India. Junonia almana completes its life cycle in 24.40 1.14 days (eggs 3, larvae, 15 – 16, pupa 5 – 7 days). The values of nutritional indices across the instars were AD (Approximate Digestibility) 44.10 – 95.87%; ECD (Efficiency of Conversion of Digested food) 1.48 – 34.00%; ECI (Efficiency of Conversion of Ingested food) 1.41 – 15.00%, measured at the temperature of 28 ± 20 C and RH of 80 ± 10% in the laboratory. These relatively high values of ECD and ECI explain at least partially the ecological success of J. almana in the present study environment. Some novelties are reported at the insular level and one Palearctic species of Nymphalidae is reported for the first time in the islands. The identification of the only species of Colias (Pieridae) present in the Cape Verde Islands and its biogeographical affinities are discussed. RESUMO Este artigo apresenta resultados de um estudo de amostras de lepidópteros das superfamílias Hesperioidea e Papilionoidea, provenientes de ilhas de Cabo Verde e em depósito no Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, Lisboa, Portugal. India Ashok Kumar Department of Zoology, BSNV PG College, Lucknow, (U.P.), INDIA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The city Jhansi is famous for the fort, gardens and surrounding hilly areas. These gardens and hilly areas have supported for butterflies and other insects. The butterflies are essential part of any natural ecosystem as their adults performs pollination. They are highly mobile organism and are able to maintain connectivity between the fragmental habitats. The larval stages are herbivorous and cause economic damage but adult are beneficial as pollinators of several trees and herbaceous flora. They are vulnerable to changes in flower supply resulting from deforestation and environmental pollution hence they are the biological indicators of pollution. The present study was conducted regarding the different selected sites visited by butterflies, their foraging activity and abundance at different sites of Jhansi. During the visit some species of butterflies were collected as flower visitors on different species of flowering plants (garden, cultivated, semi wild and wild) in selected areas. The species of collected butterflies were showed the most common and highly active species throughout the day. Some species namely Pieris canidia indica, lxias mrianne (Cramer), Catopsilia crocale (Cramer), Catopsilia pyranthe (Linn.), Eurema hecabe fimbriata (Wallace) Colias electo fieldi and Colias erate (Esper) were observed mostly on the flowering plants of each site during the study. -
