Henry VI, Part III In the wake of the Yorkist victory at St. Albans, York now has the Dramatis Personae crown of . Henry arranges for a parley and presents an offer to York: Henry will rule England until his death, with ascen- King Henry the Sixth sion at that time passing to the house of York. York agrees, but this Edward, , his son infuriates Queen Margaret; the Prince of Wales, her son, will be Lewis the Eleventh, King of France the next king. A rally by the Yorkists, however, leads to Margaret and Earl of Oxford Henry fleeing to France and Scotland, respectively. However, Warwick Edmund, Earl of Rutland enters the scene trying to broker a marriage between Edward and George, the King’s sister-in-law, Bona, and the King temporarily lends his Richard, allegiance to Edward—only to revoke it when word comes that Duke of Norfolk Edward has hastily wed a woman he fancies, Lady Grey. Warwick, Marquess of Montague also affronted by the betrayal of his mission, joins forces with Earl of Warwick Margaret as well. Earl of Pembroke Lord Hastings Meanwhile, back in England, further dissension is sown between Lord Stafford the York brothers. Richard seeks the throne for himself, and Sir John Mortimer George, Duke of Clarence, is disgruntled with his own lot. Warwick, however, manages to capture Edward be- Earl Rivers fore the major combat begins, thus temporarily restoring Henry Sir William Stanley to the throne. But Richard rescues Edward and gathers a force to Sir John Montgomery meet Warwick. Clarence rejoins his brothers as well, and at Bar- Sir John Somerville net and Tewkesbury, Warwick is defeated and slain by Edward. Tutor to Rutland Though the French troops attempt to rally, Margaret and the Prince Mayor of York of Wales are captured; the sons of York slay the Prince, but Edward Lieutenant of the Tower grants mercy to Margaret. A Nobleman Two Keepers Anticipating Edward’s further mercy to Henry, Richard pays a A Huntsman visit to the Tower of London, where Henry is held as prisoner. A Son, who has killed his father When Henry foretells Richard’s bloody future, Richard kills him. A Father, who has killed his son Edward now holds the throne as King Edward IV, but Richard yet Queen Margaret plots his own means to usurp the crown for himself.
