A detailed Access Guide to The Iron Bridge & Tollhouse This Guide contains an overview of Access for: Visitors with physical and sensory disabilities Assistance Dogs are welcome at all Museum sites. www.ironbridge.org.uk • The information given in this booklet is a detailed guide about access to the Iron Bridge & Tollhouse. • The Iron Bridge & Tollhouse are accessible from either side of the River Severn. From Ironbridge Town, the Square car park on the North side and from the Station Car Park on the South side. Both car parks are local authority Pay and Display car parks with accessible parking spaces for Blue Badge holders. • Access to the Iron Bridge & Tollhouse from the Square Car Park in Ironbridge town is via 100 metres of mixed tarmac and paving varying in levels. Access to the Iron Bridge & Tollhouse from the Station Car Park is via a ramp with a tarmac surface leading to a dropped kerb onto a tarmac path. The Iron Bridge has quite a steep slope (1 in 8) to its crest, and a firm ‘peanut brittle’ type asphalt surface. There is a defined footpath on each side with a 10cm cast-iron kerb, but no dropped kerbs. • The Tollhouse is accessible through a single entrance door with a 7cm step up and a 5cm step down onto flagstone flooring. The ground floor is accessible to wheelchair users. The upper floor houses an exhibition with graphic panels and is only accessible by stairs. A full colour booklet of the exhibition is available on the ground floor. • An Act of Parliament was passed in 1776 giving permission for the Iron Bridge and Tollhouse to be built. -

For Victorian and later writers the Watt steam engine became synonymous with industrial growth and progress in Britain. Today Muirhead’s biographies remain the major source for scholars of James Watt, his life and achievements. Muirhead was born in Lanarkshire in 1813 the son of Lockhart Muirhead who was principle librarian and regius professor of natural history in Glasgow University. His maternal grandmother was the first cousin of James Watt. Muirhead was educated in Glasgow College and later Balliol College, Oxford, practising law in Edinburgh for eight years before moving to Haseley Court in Oxfordshire. In 1844 Muirhead married Katharine Elizabeth, daughter of Matthew Robinson Boulton and granddaughter of Matthew Boulton, the manufacturer and entrepreneur. During his time at Oxford Muirhead became acquainted with James Watt, jnr who later requested Muirhead to write the memoir of his father. -

A Bristol / Coalbrookdale Connection
BIAS JOURNAL No 19 1986 A Bristol-Coalbrookdale Peggy K Stembridge The fame of Coalbrookdale, a small tributary valley to the Severn, in Shropshire, is inevit- ably associated with Abraham Darby and his family because of Darby innovations and develop- ments in the iron industry there during the eighteenth century. This connection has been well chronicled in A Raistrick's Dynasty of Iron Founders:The Darbys and Coalbrookdale (1953), and some aspects have been explored in more precise detail by R A Mott in journal art- icles.(l) International prominence has also come to the district with the establishment of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, with Abraham Darby's Old Blast Furnace as its core ('Birth- place of the Industrial Revolution’). More recently, however,some recognition has begun to come to members of the Goldney family of Bristol, who made both a financial and a practical con- tribution to the survival and development of the iron works at Coalbrookdale and to the expansion of the industry in the area. The Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, opened in 1979, displays a larger-than-life likeness of Thomas Goldney III, and in the newly opened exhibition (September 1986) in Rosehill, one of the Darby houses nearby, his contribution and that of his father, Thomas Goldney II, is again acknowledged. It is impossible to give a complete narrative of the early Coalbrookdale venture because of the nature of the surviving records: business and legal papers, diverse, fragmentary, and dispersed in various collections. The purpose of this article is to give a brief account of the Bristol connection with Darby and Coalbrook- dale in the early years, and to consider parti- cularly the significant contribution of the two Thomas Goldneys, father and son, by making use of records and information relating to them and their association with the Darby ironworks of which Raistrick and Mott were unaware. -

This historical invention, work of the Englishman William Reynolds, allowed the transportation of boats through channels located at different levels. Autodesk Inventor Professional software has been used to obtain the 3D CAD model of this historical invention and its geometric documentation. The material for the research is available on the website of the Betancourt Project of the Canary Orotava Foundation for the History of Science. Also, because the single sheet does not have a scale, it has been necessary to adopt a graphic scale so that the dimensions of the different elements are coherent. Furthermore, it has been necessary to establish some dimensional, geometric, and movement restrictions (degrees of freedom) so that the set will work properly. One of the main conclusions is that William Reynolds designed a mechanism seeking a longitudinal symmetry so that, from a single continuous movement, the mechanism allows two vessels to ascend and descend simultaneously.
