Born and raised in Scotland, Whyte has been living in Canada since He resides in KelownaBritish Columbia. Whyte's major work to date is a series of historical novels retelling the story of King Arthur against the backdrop of Roman Britain. This version of the popular legend eschews the use of magic to explain Arthur's Excalibur: Legends of Camelot 1 (Arthur the Hero - Book I) to power and instead relies on the historical condition with some artistic licence of post-Roman Britain to support the theory that Arthur was meant to counter the anarchy left by the Roman departure from Britain in AD and the subsequent colonization and invasion of Britain by various peoples from Northwestern Europe, including the SaxonsJutesFranksand Angles. Whyte incorporates both traditional Arthurian names, places and events albeit in Gaelic or Latin form as well as the names of various historical figures that have been suggested as being the possible basis for the original King Arthur legend. The tacit implication is that Whyte's version of history is the true story that has become distorted over time to become the legend and stories of magic that we know today. The series has been published in different locations under three different titles. When the series was first published in Great Britain in andthe books were retitled as indicated above, placed in a different order, and organized into several sub-series. The British editions thus came close to reversing the internal chronological and publication orders of the series.     Arthur - Fact and Fiction By Baron Hrolf Herjolfssen Each culture, everywhere in the world, has its hero figures. These are the people who have created the early history of their nation, or are held to have done so by popular myth. Some of these are familiar to us as fairly reliable history, such as Charlemagne, and others are mainly mythical. Most of these myths have some basis in historical reality although some, such as those surrounding Roland, have been very distorted by the passage of time. Some of these distortions are so bad that we have to look very hard to find the truth in them. In our Anglo-Celtic culture, one of the most popular folk tales is of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. It is a tale of heroic struggle and victory over the invader of the homeland. It contains brave deeds but is ultimately a tragedy in that treachery (of some sort) causes the ultimate end of “Camelot”. What I have tried to do here is to present a summary of the present state of what we know about Arthur, presenting not every theory in existence, but what I regard as the most likely compilation of facts with the fewest loose ends. Various writers have contributed to our current views of Arthur. Some have given us fact and others have made up their stories using only enough fact to make themselves convincing. Most of the common Arthurian elements are artfully woven into the story line and given new and interesting context.

This comparison points to the fact that Whyte demystifies and modernizes the tale, moving away from the magical and religious towards a more pragmatic and realistic story, in order to adjust his telling for his modem audience. The first chapter addresses the general changes Whyte has made to the plotline, and his different approach to the narrative presentation by employing his Lancelot character as narrator. In the second chapter mor~ specific changes are addressed, regarding Whyte's approach to the sword in the stone, the order of knighthood, and the Round Table. The final three chapters look at alterations in the characterization of Merlyn and Mordred, Gwenevere and Lancelot, and finally Arthur. The ninth-century 'Historia Brittonum' states merely that he fought 'cum regibus Brittonum' ('alongside kings of the Britons'), but was himself merely 'dux bellorum'. What this means has been long disputed. It has been taken to represent a senior rank in the Roman army, with Arthur as a commander of cavalry forces fighting up and down Britain. Closer analysis shows this as a fantasy. Comparison with medieval Welsh texts indicates that 'dux bellorum' instead corresponds to the Welsh 'penteulu' ('captain of the bodyguard, chief of the royal host'). As commander of the king's bodyguard, the 'penteulu' was the most important of the 24 officers of the court. He had a position of supreme trust, invariably being the ruler's own son or nephew or another man of rank. Setting out his income and status (which included the right to praise by the official poet of the bodyguard), medieval Welsh legal and other sources are thus the most reliable sources of information on what the Arthur of history was and was not.
