Correspondence: António Pais de Lacerda, Servicio de Medicina Intensiva, Hospital de Santa Maria 1649-035 Lisboa (Portugal). e-mail: [email protected] Received 14 July 2006; accepted 24 July 2006 Summary It was 25 years ago, in the summer of 1981, when society as a whole and particularly the scientific community was faced with an unknown disease that came later to be known as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Several films have sufficiently reflected the initial fears and uncertainty, the responses of the different social groups, the fight against ignorance, the urge of having access to treatment and the suffering of the infected individuals and their families that were due to this disease. Taking into account that these movies were fil- med when these epidemics took place they can actually be considered as true historical documents that deserve being analysed by the genera- tions to come. Films such as And The Band Played On; Long time Companion; Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt; Les Nuites Fauves; Angels in America; Yesterday and My Brother... Since the initial visibility of homosexuality with the coming-out of Bengt Martin on Swedish television in 1968, dominant gay rights discourses in Sweden have been characterized by internal dissent over the “proper” image of male homosexuality. Rather than tracing is origins to the Stonewall Inn Riots of 1969, this dissertation focuses on the AIDS crisis as a crucial and pivotal turning point in the history of homosexuality, and as playing an integral role in the shaping of contemporary discourses on male homosexuality. The project expands the history of homosexuality in Sweden beyond legislative milestones, and analyzes key sociopolitical moments in Swedish history in order to locate the literary representations into a broader context. This study is organized into four chapters that examine the literary representations of male homosexuality. The first two chapters of this study offer analyzes of the literary history as iii well as the political and legal discourses through which ideas about homosexuality were circulated. -

This essay explores the commodification of queer identities in independent cinema, offering particular attention to P. J. Castellaneta’s 1998 film, Relax ...It’sJust Sex. Like many contem- porary queer independent productions, Relax is ensnared in a representa- tional cinematic hedonics, aspiring to sustain a traditional gay and lesbian politics and simultaneously produce pleasure for multiple audiences. The construction of “America” has been a social, cultural, political and economic process fraught in both past and present with complications, contradictions, and contestations. To address the U.S.’ process of nation- building through inclusion and exclusion, this course will introduce you to the construction of identity and difference; the cultures of everyday life; and the transnational. Through these three avenues, this course will explore the meanings given to diversity, freedom, citizenship and subjectivity within situated contexts and discourses of “embodied identities.” This course will introduce you to the key analytical categories of race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, place and dis(ability). As we explore the construction of identity and difference; the cultures of everyday life; and the transnational through the lens of “the American body,” we will examine the ways in which American studies has addressed how collective and impersonal forms of political agency are routinely embodied in propertied, white men . .. Queer Approaches to Film, Television, and Digital Media
IN FOCUS: Queer Approaches to Film, Television, and Digital Media Introduction by PATTY AHN, JULIA HIMBERG, AND DAMON R. YOUNG, editors t is a tragic coincidence that the Queer Caucus of the Society of Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) was asked to curate a spe- cial “In Focus” on current approaches in queer media studies at the same time that we were devastated by the news of Alexander Doty’s untimely passing. Doty was a cofounder of the caucus and— Iboth by the example of his scholarship and through his career-long commitment to mentoring—he helped make queer media studies what it is today. At a memorial event at the 2013 annual meeting for the SCMS, members from the community refl ected on Doty’s im- mense intellectual and personal legacy. Corey Creekmur’s poignant tribute, adapted here, refl ects on the distinctive qualities that made Doty such a formative fi gure in the fi eld. Foremost among those quali- ties is courage—the courage, as Creekmur puts it, of the Lion in The Wizard of Oz (a fi lm on which Doty has offered perhaps the defi nitive queer analysis), not the courage of patriarchs but that of “sissies.” Doty’s courage was at once intellectual, personal, and pedagogical; it was the courage to forge a queer way of being in a world whose norms remain defensively, and sometimes violently, straight. It was also the courage to allow personal “investment” to register at the surface of his scholarly work. We open this “In Focus” with Creekmur’s contribution in dedication to Alex and his irreverent, generous, and brilliant “queer approach” to life and work.
