The suffering of the people in northern Uganda was described by Jan Egeland, the former United Nations Under- Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs, as ‘the biggest forgotten humanitarian crisis in the world’. This study is primarily concerned with the plight of child soldiers in northern Uganda and how their effective reintegration and rehabilitation (RR) could lead to successful peacebuilding. The study is premised on the hypothesis that ‘the promotion of the RR of former child soldiers by providing psychosocial support based on traditional and indigenous resources may contribute to conditions of peace and stability in northern Uganda.’ The main contribution of this research is that it explores the relevance of psychosocial support based on the traditional and indigenous resources to the RR of child soldiers and peacebuilding of war-torn societies. -

Vol. 1, No. 3, 2018, pp. 115-124. doi: 10.11648/j.ijls.20180103.13 Received : October 8, 2018; Accepted : October 25, 2018; Published : November 21, 2018 Abstract: Despite the prohibition of child soldiers by international law, recent African conflicts have witnessed a persistence of this phenomenon, which is becoming ever more specialised. An example of such specialist involvement of children in African armed conflicts is the use of young children, especially girls as suicide bombers by the jihadist terrorist groups Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab. Using children in armed conflict is regarded as amongst the worst forms of child abuse under international law and African regional law. This article examines the almost unprecedented threat to the human rights of children created by child soldiers and specifically child suicide bombers with the objective of identifying major weaknesses in the responses by both general international law and African Union legal instruments. Despite the comprehensive engagement of international regulations with children in armed conflict, they are silent on the practice of using children for the specific purpose of suicide bombings. This article considers the question whether child suicide bombers can be considered to be child soldiers and as such should benefit from the regulations applicable to the latter category. -

Victor Department of Anthropology McGill University, Montreal June 2011 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts In Anthropology with Development Studies © Letha Victor 2011 ABSTRACT From 1986 to 2006, northern Uganda was the site of a violent conflict between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Government of Uganda. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the Acholi sub-region in 2009, this thesis examines the narratives of young women who were abducted by the LRA, forced to serve multiple roles in “the bush,” and have since returned to civilian life. I explore the supernatural dimensions of the conflict and contend that women were agents of their own survival because they learned to manipulate their physical and cosmological circumstances, both during and after their captivity. At the margins of transitional justice debates, women negotiate their own memories within an intricate web of religiosity. Though forced into marriage, motherhood, and soldiering, only to come home to lives marked by stigma, patriarchy, and poverty, ex-LRA women are complex persons who defy the tropes of “sex slave” and “child soldier.” RÉSUMÉ De 1986 à 2006, le nord de l'Ouganda a été le site d'un conflit violent entre la «Lord's Resistance Army» (LRA) et le Gouvernement de l'Ouganda. Basée sur une recherche ethnographique menée dans la sous-région d'Acholi en 2009, cette mémoire de thèse examine les récits de jeunes femmes qui ont été enlevés par la LRA, forcés de servir de multiples rôles dans «la brousse», et ont depuis réintégré la vie civile. -

Lots of research has been done about the reintegration of these children after they return from the army. During the reconciliation and reintegration processes of child soldiers different actors come to the fore, like international organisations, the government and the local communities, implementing their ideas in these programmes. This research focusses on the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and their abduction of children in Northern Uganda, of the Acholi community. This research aims at enriching the knowledge about these different actors, their opinions about the reintegration and reconciliation process of child soldiers and the difficulties or clashes that occur between these actors. The reconciliation and reintegration in the local communities is mainly focused on culture and tradition. This is an important factor to take into account while implementing a programme in this area. It is also important for the different actors to keep this in mind when they have to work together for the reintegration of child soldiers. Furthermore acceptance of the community and the communication between the different actors; community, children, family and other institutions, is an important aspect for a smooth reintegration of children in their community. Pathways to African Feminism and Development- Journal of African Women’s Studies Centre, University of Nairobi (http://www.uonbi.ac.ke/journals/) Volume 1, Issue3, December 2015 ISSN 2309-3625 Beyond Victims: Re-Representation of Women in Conflict -Jackie Ojiambo1 Abstract The intransigent nature of war in parts of Eastern Africa continues to be a grave concern to the world. Periods of violence within the region have invoked memories of conflict by both men and women. Drawing on feminist studies of women‟s autobiographical writings, this paper examines the experience of women during conflict. The memoirs highlight the special concerns of women, such as: malnutrition; shelter; reproductive health including childbirth and family planning; rape and sexual abuse; relocation stress; role strains and role change; family separation and perceived helplessness. Of specific interest is the manner in which female memoirs of conflict contest stereotypical images of women as passive victims of war. I argue that stereotypic images of women as apathetic victims of conflict overshadow their agency and contribution to peace building. The memoirs examined from Uganda, Sudan and Somali disprove the portrayal and treatment of women solely as victims. The writers under study help to institute a female role in national conflict and female literature of conflict. They provide concrete examples of how women demonstrate resilience in overcoming despair, participating in conflict prevention, management and resolution. This paper aims to contribute to the discourses on the inclusion of women in the different phases of conflict and peace building processes. Introduction The memoirs of Grace Akallo, Halima Bashir and Hawa Abdi represent the life experiences of three survivors of conflict. -
