Welcome to Elie for the first game of our 2017 season. For our season opener we are delighted to welcome back the Eccentric Flamingoes to the beach after a break of 20 years. Based in Edinburgh, the Flamingoes played against us four times in 1996 and 1997 both home and away. The Ship were victorious on all 4 occasions, our last game seeing the Ship sneak a narrow one win. Today we are delighted to welcome a new generation of Flamingoes to the beach…

TODAY’S MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Today’s man of the match award has been generously donated by today’s match sponsor Belhaven Best.

Throughout this season: Any batsman hitting a six which lands in the Ship Inn beer garden will win their height in Belhaven beer. Any non-playing spectator who catches a six in the beer garden will also win their height in Belhaven beer

The Ship Inn CC would like to thank our club sponsors for their generous support throughout the season…

An introduction to the Flamingoes, in their own words… The Eccentric Flamingoes, formed in 1987, have always been a side that promoted inclusion rather than ability. The Flamingoes have always played ‘Cutters’ Rules’ (a more informal variant of the Ship Inn’s own beach rules), ensuring that no one player could eclipse a team, but still allowing for rare flashes of inspiration.

The name ‘Eccentric Flamingoes” goes back further than 1987, with references dating back to an article by Andrew Lang (the Scots poet, novelist, literary and critic) on Borders Cricket. Lang talked about participating in a touring team with that name, founded in 1868 and who wore "red and black curiously disposed". Consequently the Flamingoes have shied away from traditional whites, and Flamingoes of all shapes and sizes can be found donned in their traditional red and black ‘feathers’.

Among former players, the Flamingoes can boast the services of Iwan Tukalo (Scottish rugby player) and also Jimmy Adams - yes, THAT Jimmy Adams, who would go on to the West Indies cricket team. It is believed that Adams is the only Flamingoes player to have played at international level, but it is perhaps more correct to assert that he is the only international player to have played at Flamingoes level.

The Flamingoes’ attitudes and ethos continue in the manner they have always done, and they remain an attractive, if slightly unorthodox, way to participate in cricket in Edinburgh.

Playing regulations for today’s match 1. Each innings will consist of 30 overs per side. 2. Each player can bowl a maximum of 3 overs each. 3. Any batsman on reaching 50 runs is required to retire . There will be a tea interval between innings. A short drinks break may also be taken after 15 overs at the side’s captain's request. 6. The boundary is as marked by any flags or boundary rope, or is the line of the incoming tide, whichever is nearer the striker’s end. 7. In the event of any dispute, the decision of the Ship Inn CC Captain is final.
