Alaska Welcomes Its 1,000,000 Cruise Ship Visitor in 2016 For the first time in seven years, Alaska welcomed its one millionth cruise ship visitor. Alaska Governor Walker issued a proclamation for the occasion, declaring 22 September 2016, Alaska Cruise Ship Visitor Day. The industry is expected to bring even more visitors next year as Alaska continues to increase capacity. Holland America Line recently announced that it would be adding a seventh ship to the Alaska market next year. Seabourn has also announced that it will be returning to Alaska in 2017 for the first time in 15 years. The last time Alaska saw more than 1,000,000 cruise visitors was 2009. “Following years of amazing growth, Alaska took a big hit, we lost about 15 percent of our market as many businesses suffered and statewide, Alaska lost more than 5,000 jobs. We are now seeing the benefits of the improved tax and regulatory environment enacted in 2010,” CLIA Alaska President John Binkley said.

42 October 2016 Te Papa, Wellington, New Zealand

The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is the national museum and art gallery of New Zealand, located in Wellington. It is branded and commonly known as Te Papa and Our Place. “Te Papa Tongarewa” is broadly translatable as “the place of treasures of this land”. If you are visiting Wellington this is a must see, especially the ground- breaking exhibition that tells the story of the Gallipoli campaign in World War I through the eyes and words of eight ordinary New Zealanders who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances – Gallipoli: The scale of our war. Each is captured frozen in a moment of time on a monumental scale – 2.4 times human size. The large- scale sculptures took a staggering 24,000 hours to create, and countless hours were spent researching their rich histories. Cutting-edge technology was used to create 3-D maps, projections, miniatures, models, dioramas, and interactive experiences to bring this story to life. A week out from the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in April 2015 the public had their first look at this exhibition, developed by Te Papa working closely with Weta Workshop. So far there have been over 900,000 visitors. Entry is free and it will be open till 2019. It is an outstanding exhibition allowing much time for reflection and has had profound emotional impact on many people who have visited. – JT

Cruising provides an excellent overview of New Zealand with the best itinerary including the Bay of Islands down to Milford Sound. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, P&O and Princess Cruises have frequent departures to New Zealand from October to March. For must see shore excursions book in advance but don’t be restricted by the ship’s choices. Research local tour operators (many will be waiting at the terminal) or if you want to self explore, have your day planned out with a map, transport options (shuttle buses are usually provided), NZ currency for incidentals (though credit cards are widely accepted), and list of places to see, port agent’s contact and terminal details if you get lost. Arrivals that are in the city centre such as Auckland and Akaroa are perfect for self exploration. Strict quarantine rules apply in New Zealand. Do not take food off the ship. Take a water bottle that you can refill as New Zealand has the freshest purest water often from springs. Sample local produce at farmers markets including cheeses, fruit and wine which is excellent. Bring your woollies and fleece jackets. Even in January it is cool. Get to know key ship staff by name and at the end of the cruise give thanks and pass on any positive feedback. Working onboard gave me an insight into how hard the crew try. Your appreciation means a lot.
