Otway Gourmet Farmers Week Background Information

COSTIN FAMILY FARM, GLENAIRE The Costin Family first came to the Apollo Bay region in the 1870’s to establish a mill, which supplied timber to the Ballarat goldfields.

Henry Lazenby Costin later founded the Ballarat Hotel, now known as the Great Ocean Hotel, in Apollo Bay in the early 1880’s and also managed the local butchers and abattoir.

After working behind the bar, Henry’s youngest son Les decided to select a piece of land at Hordern Vale in the Valley, which has since been farmed by the Costin family over the generations and seen extensive growth, to a farm which today produces more than 3,500 lambs and 400 young cattle annually.

The family has continuously farmed in the Aire River Valley producing premium grass-fed beef and lamb from some of the most naturally productive land in Australia. All stock is finished on prime Otway pastures, drink pure Otway water and breathe fresh ‘Glen’aire.

Bruce Costin and son, Rob, specially select Aire Valley lamb from their Romney-based flock and high quality Aire Valley young cattle from their Angus breeding herd to supply Udi Sharabi’s Otway Prime branded meat. Sold throughout southern under the Otway Prime label at local farmers markets and retailers. Udi, who is passionate about supplying prime, dry aged , pasture fed beef and lamb has established a reputation throughout southern Victoria as a premium supplier in the industry.

Further information on Udi and his products visit the Otway Prime website.

ANDY, MITCH AND BEER After finding his father’s old fermenter in the garage during a cold winter in Glenaire, Andy Costin quickly became curious about learning about the craft of brewing beer. Keen to master the art, Andy began brewing beer, which included his infamous, but exquisite, “Fart Beer”. After travelling through Europe sampling many different styles of beer, Andy was inspired to expand his repertoire and spent many years researching his passion, graduating to “All-Grain” brewing.

Since 2009, Andy and his youngest brother, Mitch, have built on Andy’s original repertoire and are continually refining their recipes. Mitch has been working tirelessly on the consumption side-in summary, he has tasted every beer he could get the top off, while studying business part time.

They are proud to launch their first batch from the Crowes Nest label. With a moderately malty flavor and dry finish, balanced with significant hop character, Steam Train is made to be a perfect session beer that will surprise those avid pale beer drinkers.
