Calveley School Report

Staff and children have been congratulated on their efforts devoted to environmental education and have been awarded their fourth Eco Green Flag. The assessor commented that Calveley has a ‘great eco team… and it is especially good to see parents and governors actively involved in projects and promoting eco with other schools’. Eco coordinator Kate Huntbach stated that very few schools in the area hold such a prestigious award. Senior leader Kelly Spencer said,” This award reflects the dedication and commitment throughout the school and especially from the eco committee.” In order to achieve the Green Flag status, Calveley is working on nine different topics; energy, water, healthy living, bio diversity, school grounds; global citizenship, waste minimisation, transport and litter. The award is presented every two years.

7 ‘WHERE DOES ALL THE MONEY COME FROM?

This morning, a member of the congregation at St. Oswalds was surprised to learn that bills for electricity and gas were paid for by us – the Church. She was under the common misconception that they were paid for by the state – or at least by the Church of England. Our vicar Anne, thinks quite rightly that we should draw this to the attention of the parish by inserting the following facts in the parish magazine.

How much do you know about how your church is funded? One of the following statements is false – but which one?

• Parish share - the amount our parish pays for a Vicar is £9,190 per year. • It does not matter if we fall behind on paying parish share. The Church or the government will pay. • If every person on the Church electoral roll (at present 58) gave £2 weekly we would cover the Parish share easily – similarly if everyone in the parish paid only £2 per month. • The only source of income for the Church is from the people who give regularly, or those who have services such as funerals and weddings in Church. • Parish share covers the cost of the vicar and the cost of housing, pension, etc. and also the costs of support from the Diocese. Legal advice, Reader and Clergy training, professional support and advice for the school, and other expert advice for the running of the parish. • Parish share does not cover gas, electricity, insurance or building maintenance. • The government gives no help towards the upkeep of Church buildings – only occasionally giving grants towards Church roof repairs. • If we fail to meet Parish share costs, there will not be a full time Vicar in the future.

The false statement is the second one. If we cannot pay our parish share no one else will pay it for us. Instead in due course we would be grouped with even more parishes, or we would have a part time vicar.

10 11 World Book Day at St Oswald’s School

The Assistant Head Teacher said about the day - We encouraged the children to come to school dressed as their favourite character from a book they had read. We also based the day around a book called 'The Day the Crayons Quit' by Drew Daywalt. The older children in KS2 were also asked to bring in their favourite book and prepare a 5 minute talk about why they liked it. The day was great fun and even the staff got dressed up as you can see

from some of the photos. To round the day off we had a Whole School Collective Act of Worship where we captured the moment with a Whole School, World Book Day Photo.

18 Worleston WI “Jerusalem, Jitterbug and Jeeps”

Vice President Marilyn Booth opened the Worleston WI March meeting by welcoming members, visitors and special guest speaker Rena Tillinger. There are always plenty of activities and new events for the ladies to enjoy, often with competitions and opportunities to learn and practice new skills, both within the Worleston membership and in friendly competition with other local institutes. The Worleston quiz team are through the preliminary quiz round and we wish them good luck in the quiz final at Comberbach. The regular Worleston activities are all well attended and everyone is encouraged to come along and “have a go”. Marilyn is planning several new outings and social events and the walking group will set off again in April. The drama group are back in rehearsals for their next entertainment. Janet and Kath had attended the Annual Council meeting with Betty, who gave an excellent report. After the business agenda, Marilyn invited Rena TIllinger to tell the ladies all about the “GI’s in Britain”. Rena delighted the ladies in her enthusiastic tales and slides and with memories told to her by her own GI father. “Over paid, over sexed and over here”, “Got any gum chum?” and “Got a sister Mister?” along with jazz, jitterbugs and jeeps featured in Rena’s lively presentation. Rena will certainly be invited for a return visit to Worleston as everyone thoroughly enjoyed her presentation which is only one of many in her repertoire. Dorothy Barley gave a vote of thanks to Rena and Pam Parton won the monthly competition with an embroidered cushion. Worleston WI is a friendly and active mixed age group of ladies who enjoy a variety of good speakers, sociable, interesting and fun activities and crafts, frequently including families and friends. The next meeting, at the Worleston & District Village Hall, will be on Wednesday 13th April 2016 at 7.15pm when members and visitors will turn “detective” to solve a murder mystery presented by the Worleston WI Drama Group. Visitors and new members are always welcome at Worleston WI. For details or to visit, please contact Annita on tel: 01270 629164 or Linda on tel: 01270 781220, or see the Worleston Village Hall website under “Groups”.
