Calveley School Report Staff and children have been congratulated on their efforts devoted to environmental education and have been awarded their fourth Eco Green Flag. The assessor commented that Calveley has a ‘great eco team… and it is especially good to see parents and governors actively involved in projects and promoting eco with other schools’. Eco coordinator Kate Huntbach stated that very few schools in the area hold such a prestigious award. Senior leader Kelly Spencer said,” This award reflects the dedication and commitment throughout the school and especially from the eco committee.” In order to achieve the Green Flag status, Calveley is working on nine different topics; energy, water, healthy living, bio diversity, school grounds; global citizenship, waste minimisation, transport and litter. The award is presented every two years. 7 ‘WHERE DOES ALL THE MONEY COME FROM? This morning, a member of the congregation at St. Oswalds was surprised to learn that bills for electricity and gas were paid for by us – the Church. She was under the common misconception that they were paid for by the state – or at least by the Church of England. Our vicar Anne, thinks quite rightly that we should draw this to the attention of the parish by inserting the following facts in the parish magazine. How much do you know about how your church is funded? One of the following statements is false – but which one? • Parish share - the amount our parish pays for a Vicar is £9,190 per year. • It does not matter if we fall behind on paying parish share. The Church or the government will pay. • If every person on the Church electoral roll (at present 58) gave £2 weekly we would cover the Parish share easily – similarly if everyone in the parish paid only £2 per month. • The only source of income for the Church is from the people who give regularly, or those who have services such as funerals and weddings in Church. • Parish share covers the cost of the vicar and the cost of housing, pension, etc. and also the costs of support from the Diocese. Legal advice, Reader and Clergy training, professional support and advice for the school, and other expert advice for the running of the parish. • Parish share does not cover gas, electricity, insurance or building maintenance. • The government gives no help towards the upkeep of Church buildings – only occasionally giving grants towards Church roof repairs.
