COMPANY PROFILE Jeffery W George & Associates was set up in 1990 as a buildings conservation consultancy specialising in sensitive planning and listed building consent issues. Jeffery George BA. FASI. FFB. FRSA. FCIOB. MRICS. IHBC. Assoc AIA. trained in architecture and surveying and, following an initial four year’s experience with a major international construction company has gained more than thirty years experience in the field of conservation and planning. This experience began with the Ancient Monuments Branch of the Department of the Environment where he was responsible for the surveying, recording and upkeep of monuments throughout England. In 1974 he joined the Historic Buildings Division of the Greater London Council’s Department of Architecture and Civic Design where he was engaged in all of the working aspects of planning with particular regard to the processing and negotiation of applications for planning permission and listed building consent to alter buildings of special architectural and historic interest. Duties included the making of grants, the giving of expert evidence by means of written representations or at public inquiries and the designation of conservation areas. Upon the abolition of the GLC the Historic Buildings Division was wholly absorbed by English Heritage. The Associates of the practice are also former English Heritage professionals with similar ranges of qualifications and experience. Clients of the practice have included private individuals, leading property developers, banking institutions and international architectural practices. Notable projects have included a scheme of residential development and underground car parking in the garden of Lowther Lodge, a Grade I listed building by Norman Shaw, and a scheme of residential development and conversion of The Royal Holloway Sanatorium, Virginia Water, another Grade I listed building by W H Crossland. -

PRESERVED COACHING STOCK OF BRITISH RAILWAYS AMENDMENT SHEET NUMBER 71 September/October 2004 SPECIAL AND CHARTER TRAIN COACHING STOCK 1) Old Oak Common Fire During the evening of 5 th September a fire started in Fragonset Railways Mark 1 RBR 1981 stabled at Old Oak Common. The London Fire Brigade preliminary investigation concluded that the fire had been caused as a result of the boiler in the kitchen area of the carriage having been left on and consequently boiling dry. The consequential fire then burnt through the bottom of the boiler, then through the aluminium floor of the kitchen before spreading through the whole carriage and to adjacent carriages before being brought under control by the fire brigade. In addition to the extensive damage to 1981 it is understood that Mark 2 FOs 3429 and 3300 coupled either side of it were severely damaged along with lesser damage to FO 3337 coupled to 3300. On adjacent sidings and extensively damaged were Mark 2 TSOs 5814 and 5816 on one side and Mark 2 TSOs 5389 SIR GALAHAD and 5420 LYONNESSE on the other. Other carriages close by also suffered from smoke damage. 2) Fragonset Railways Mark 1 RBR 1657 has been acquired from the Llangollen Railway (see below) and moved to the companies Derby workshops. An extensive overhaul is now taking place prior to this carriage entering service to replace fire damaged RBR 1981 (see above). 3) Riviera Trains Mark 2 TSO 5275 has been taken out of use and disposed of as shown below. Wimbledon, 1951-53 (and a few other railway memories) JDB, August 2013, minor additions and corrections May/August 2015 Neither this nor its companion piece “Derby Day, 1949” lays claim to any particular literary or other merit; they are merely pieces of first-hand reportage which may perhaps be of interest to future transport historians. In September 1951, I started going to school in Wimbledon. This involved a train journey morning and evening, an experience which put me off commuting for life but which also led to an interest in railways that still survives. In particular, one of the ways of walking from the station to school followed a footpath alongside the railway for the first half mile or so. Wimbledon is seven miles out of Waterloo, on what was originally the main line of the London and Southampton Railway. In due course, this became the London and South Western, then it was grouped into the Southern Railway, and by 1951 it had become part of British Railways. The lines from Waterloo divide at Clapham Junction, a line towards Windsor and Reading branching off to the north, and there are several connections between the two. One is at Putney, where a steep climb leads up to East Putney station on the Wimbledon branch of the London Underground District Line, and a Waterloo to Wimbledon suburban service via East Putney used this until 1941. Wimbledon station had been completely rebuilt in 1929, and in 1951 it comprised ten platforms. Four were terminal platforms for the District Line, this side of the station being essentially self-contained though there was a connection from the East Putney line to the main line just outside. -

Ref No: HT21 (14/15) Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Key Decision: Yes West Sussex County Council response to the Part I or Part II: Network Rail draft Sussex Area Route Study Part I consultation Report by Director of Highways and Transport and Electoral Director of Strategic Planning and Place Divisions: All Executive Summary Network Rail is undertaking a consultation to gather views on its draft South East Route: Sussex Area Route Study. This study sets out a 30-year vision for this area of the rail network. It primarily focuses on rail industry Control Period 6 (2019-2024) to inform Government investment decisions for this time frame, but also considers growth in demand for rail travel to 2043. Consultation responses are being welcomed on any of the ideas and interventions set out in the study. The study will inform future decisions about rail infrastructure and rail service planning as well as the capacity of major stations, rather than specific timetable, service quality and station access issues which are concerns for the rail franchisee. Key issues highlighted in the County Council response include: support for investment to expand capacity for the Brighton Main Line; a request for further investment in rail infrastructure away from routes to London to support a balanced economy; support for analysis undertaken within the Study into the Arundel Chord scheme and provision of an improved journey times along the West Coastway route; and requests for greater attention to be made to level crossing and car parking issues within the study. Recommendation The Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport approves West Sussex County Council’s consultation response, contained in Appendix A of the report, for submission to the Network Rail draft South East Route: Sussex Area Route Study. -

East Sussex County Council Local Transport Plan Rail Development Strategy Why do we need a rail strategy? The current Local Transport Plan contains an outline strategy which focusses on the rail network as a local transport system for East Sussex, together with some specific investment targets for the network. However the last free-standing rail strategy for East Sussex was produced in 1990, and it has not been reviewed substantially since then. Important changes in transport policy have taken place in that period, including the far-reaching privatisation of the rail industry. In the context of the continuing uncertainties surrounding the industry, and the Government’s commitment to invest £30bn in rail by 2011, it is now appropriate to develop a new, free-standing rail strategy. Background Two indicators of economic difficulties in East Sussex are insufficient job opportunities for local residents in the coastal areas and an over-reliance on the service sector as a wealth generator. The new rail strategy is aimed at addressing these through improved links to areas where there is a surplus of job opportunities, and, as part of a robust freight strategy for the area, exploring opportunities for freight on rail with the local business community. A key element of the strategy is aimed stimulating the economy of the East Sussex Rural Priority Area through improvements to the Hastings-Rye-Ashford line. The road network in East Sussex is under stress, particularly in the coastal strip where peak spreading is occurring, with important sections of the coastal road network operating at or near design capacity. -

Length Main Walk: 17½ km (10.9 miles). Four hours 15 minutes walking time. For the whole excursion including trains, sights and meals, allow at least 9 hours. Short Walk, starting from Frant: 15 km (9.4 miles). Three hours 40 minutes walking time. Long Walk, starting from Frant: 21¼ km (13.2 miles). Five hours 10 minutes walking time. Long Circular Walk, via Groombridge: 23¾ km (14.7 miles). Five hours 45 minutes walking time. OS Maps Explorer 135 & (if starting from Frant station) 136. Tunbridge Wells, map reference TQ585392, is in Kent, 7 km S of Tonbridge. Toughness 4 out of 10 (6 for the Long Walks). Features This walk through the High Weald near the border of East Sussex and Kent has plenty of interest and variety. After escaping from the suburban charms of Tunbridge Wells you climb through woodland to a possible early lunch stop in the elegant hill-top village of Frant, dominated by its large triangular green. The walk continues with an attractive but potentially muddy section through the landscaped parkland of the Nevill Estate's Eridge Old Park.
