AR 10-11-Online Version.Indd President’s Letter Dear Chaminade Family, Recently, I was returning a test to my junior Christian Humanism class. The test material was mostly from Man’s Search for Meaning by Dr. Viktor Frankl. Many alumni will remember this staple of the junior religion curriculum in which Dr. Frankl shares his story of life in a concentration camp and the lessons he learned. Some alumni share that it is their favorite book from their four years at Chami- nade High School; other alumni offer, hopefully jesting, that it is the only book they actually read. As I walked up and down the aisles of the classroom returning the tests, one junior looked at his grade and sighed audibly, “Thank God.” His relief about his higher-than-expected score left me smiling and wondering if either a miracle had occurred or if I had made a calculation error. We bantered about his relief and class ended. Thank God! From one perspective, this is the fundamental lesson we seek to teach at Chaminade High School. We tell our students and remind ourselves that all we have is a gift from God. Thus, both our attitude and actions ought to proclaim a common theme: Thank God! This annual report attempts to echo that theme in its own small way. We pause to thank God for you and your gener- osity. We close the books on the 2010 Torch Fund conscious of the abundant blessings received. Although the total dollar amount lags behind our record year 2008 by $291,673, the number of donors reached a new all-time high for Chaminade with 6,247 contributors. As the pages that follow bear witness, so many Chaminade Family members are committed to partnering with us to keep Chaminade affordable for the Catholic families of Long Island. And thank God – we are succeeding. The tuition of each and every student is reduced by $1,225. This is a 14% reduction in tuition for each student. Many families share that this amount makes the difference between sending their son to Chaminade or not. In the tough economic times we have been experiencing, you have made a difference in the lives of each Chaminade student regardless of the size of your donation. Every gift counts! Please do not just take my word for it. One senior shared this remark with me about the impact of the Torch contribu- tion to his tuition: “Without your help, my Chaminade experience would not have been possible. Therefore, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your kindness. It makes me very glad to know my financial issues are a little less severe, allowing me to concentrate on my academics. I pray to God regularly in thanksgiving for your generosity. Thank you. As soon as I can, I plan to give back to Chaminade just like you and make a difference in the lives of future Flyers.” There are so many aspects of Chaminade that I am grateful to have the joy and pleasure of witnessing day after day: students assisting each other through a tough homework assignment, a friend carrying the books of a classmate on crutches, or a flock of Flyers cheering for their peers at a game or match. While moments like those are gratifying indeed, they pale in comparison to the gratitude I am privileged to experience when I witness the impact of your gen- erosity toward our young men, knowing the difference it makes for them. Without you, they would not be with us at Chaminade. Without you, they would not have all those other wonderful experiences. The worldwide Marianist family is in the midst of celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of our founder, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade. His vision of education as the work of a family permeates all we do at the high school in Mineola that bears his name. In my prayers of gratitude, I imagine that he views the overwhelming support of the Chaminade Family for today’s Flyers as a testimony to the graced vision he received from God. James Williams ’87 at the Fortieth An- nual Founder’s Dinner. 2 AARR 10-11-Online10-11-Online VVersion.inddersion.indd 2 112/6/20102/6/2010 11:58:00:58:00 PPMM Principal’s Letter Dear Members of the Chaminade Family, As you are slowly passing through a highway construction zone, I am sure that you have seen the signs that say “Your tax dollars at work.” Well, I’d like to paraphrase those signs for this letter, entitling it: “Your Torch Dollars at Work.” In so many ways, your contributions have had a great impact on so many students, especially given these current economic conditions. Whether in academics, athlet- ics, or activities, Chaminade men continue to put your contributions to good use. This past September, we recognized the academic achievements of the previous year at the Academic Awards Assembly. We inducted 725 sophomores, juniors and seniors into the Chaminade Honor Society for achieving honor roll status. That represents 57% of those three divisions. Additionally, 322 students were inducted into the National Honor Society, joining the 290 seniors already inducted the previous year. In the National Merit Scholarship Competition, seven Semifinalists, twenty Commended Students, and eight Commended Scholars of the Class of 2011 were recognized for their academic achievements. Chaminade men continue to work hard and achieve in the extensive athletic and activity programs offered at Chami- nade. This past year an incredible 93% of the students participated in at least one sport or activity; many were in- volved in two or more. Hundreds of students are involved in the spiritual and service activities of the school, such as Emmaus projects, the Parish Religious Education Program, Apostles Retreat Staff, and evenings of recollection. Over 525 students are members of Sodality. Our student journalists continue to excel as demonstrated by the many sig- nificant awards garnered by our literary staffs. For several years now, our school newspaper, Tarmac, and our school yearbook, Crimson and Gold, have both received excellence awards on the state and national levels. From the Empire State Scholastic Press Association, Tarmac received a Gold Medal All-New York rating, placing it among the top fourteen newspapers in New York State. Sixteen students won individual awards from ESSPA for their work on the paper. The yearbook received three distinguished honors: a First Class Honor Certificate from the National Scholastic Press Association; a Silver Medal from the ESSPA; and First Place (including Most Outstanding Business Section) from the American Scholastic Press Association. The Chaminade literary magazine, Skylight, received a First Place Award from the American Scholastic Press Association. Our Speech and Debate Team qualified fifty-two of its members for the New York State Championship; eighteen for the Catholic National Tournament, and four for the National Forensic League National Tournament. The Science Olympiad Team took fourth place in the Regional Competition and the Envirothon Team captured first place in the Nassau County competition and tenth place in the New York State compe- tition. Finally, the 402 students in the Class of 2010 received 1,112 scholarships. Chaminade’s athletic program is marked by its hard work and effort, resulting in many successes this past year. The Flyers captured 17 season and league championships combined. The Crew Team captured the New York Champion- ship for the ninth year and, in addition to many significant placings in the New York State Championships, Stotesbury Cup Regatta and the Scholastic National Championships, the team placed 7th out of 23 teams in the US Rowing Championships. We are particularly proud that our teams received eight plaques in recognition of their sportsman- ship, including the IAABO Sportsmanship Award in basketball for the 22nd time in the past 24 years. Additionally, two of our coaches were recognized as Coach of the Year. Hard work and effort have paid off well for our athletes. “Your Torch Dollars” were clearly “At Work” this past summer.

The nominating committee proposes candidates for official ISEE positions. The Secretary of the ISEE has five main duties: to handle society correspondence and writings, excluding the web page; to convene a business meeting once a year at one of the three APAs; to arrange the ISEE program at the Central Division APA; to send the ISEE newsletter to the membership; and to exercise executive control over the membership list generated by the Treasurer. Please verify that persons nominated will be willing to serve. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is in danger. Millions of migratory birds, the Porcupine Caribou herd, polar bears, and a spectacular pristine wilderness are threatened, as pro- development forces make the strongest push ever to drill for oil in the refuge. There is scant evidence you can drill the Arctic in an environmentally sensitive manner: even under tight scrutiny, oil companies have continued to have accidents and spills in the nearby Naval Petroleum Reserve. A footprint in a wilderness area is still a footprint, and in the case of oil development, it is much more, including thousands of acres of roads and pipelines. Letters to Congress and Op-ed pieces defending ANWR are urgently needed.
