The library KOLKATA AN INTRODUCTION National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) is the first national level institute in pharmaceutical sciences with a proclaimed objective of becoming a center of excellence for Advanced studies and research in pharmaceutical sciences. The Government of India has declared NIPER as an 'Institute of National Importance'. It is an autonomous body set up under the aegis of Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India. NIPER is a member of Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities. National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER),Kolkata was created in 2007 under the aegis of Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizer as a Centre of excellence for higher education, research and development in pharmaceutical sciences. The institute was declared as an Institute of National importance by Government of India through Act of Parliament ( NIPER Act 1998 & NIPER amendment Act 2007). At present the new Institute is housed at Indian Institute of Chemical Biology(IICB), a premier Institute of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, India. VISION “To become a globally recognized brand in the areas of education and research in pharmaceutical sciences for the benefit of people of India and other countries and the growth of the pharmaceutical industry." MISSION ! Imparting quality education in the areas of Pharmaceutical Sciences. ! Promotion of innovative and translation research. ! Study of national/ international pharmaceutical policy issues. ! Creation of specialized centers to cater to the needs of pharmaceutical industries and other research and teaching institutes. 1 INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES The institute as it stands today housed in CSIR-IICB. The Centre has the following state-of-the-art facilities: Air-conditioned auditorium-260 seats . Air-conditioned seminar hall-80 seats . Conference Hall and Class rooms . LIBRARY It is spread over 2500 sq.ft consisting of 1000 books and more than 2000 journal volumes encompassing all disciplines of pharmaceutical sciences and technology viz. !Pharmaceutics !Pharmaceutical Technology ! NIPER-Kolkata admits students for M.S. (Pharm.) in three disciplines, Medicinal Chemistry, Natural Products and Pharmacoinformatics. All the students are GATE /GPAT qualified and get admitted through Nation-wide open joint entrance examination. NIPER- Kolkata boasts of an excellent faculty numbering to more than eighty guest faculty members. NIPER-Kolkata is currently housed at Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB), a premier Institute of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), India. With the untiring and sincere efforts of the faculty and the dedication and devotion of the students, the first six batches of students have graduated and majority of them have secured Placements in Universities, Research Institutes, Industry and Academic Institutions. After completion of the second semester the seventh batch of 49 M.S.(Pharm.) students in Medicinal Chemistry, Natural Products and Pharmacoinformatics are currently undergoing their thesis work, some in the mentor institute and some in the University departments, in other research institutes in Kolkata like Bose Institute and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and in companies like Chembiotech and TCG Life Sciences. The students will be graduating in June,2015 to offer themselves for suitable academic and research opportunities in academic organizations, research institutes and pharmaceutical industry. I am confident that our students are well prepared, competent in their subjects, well behaved and well groomed to fit well as professionals in their future carriers. I welcome the academic and research institutions and the pharmaceutical industry all over the country to come and visit NIPER-Kolkata, conduct campus interviews and offer suitable opportunities to the deserving students. Hence NIPER-Kolkata students are virtually from all parts of the country as can be seen from the state-wise break up of the seventh batch of students given below.
