The Boston Red Sox Thursday, October 29, 2020 * The Boston Globe Your guide to the Red Sox' offseason Julian McWilliams The Red Sox offseason is officially underway with the conclusion of the World Series, and it will certainly be different from years past because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That reality isn’t exclusive to the Red Sox. The sport as a whole has taken a financial hit throughout 2020 and each team will have to navigate an offseason with even more uncertainty ahead. Nevertheless, here’s a guide to what to expect this offseason. Who will be the manager? It’s clear that Ron Roenicke was just a bridge manager in 2020, helping to get chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox to this point, but he wasn’t Bloom’s choice for the job going forward. Many have speculated that former Sox manager Alex Cora would be a good choice to return as manager after serving a year-long suspension for his involvement in the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal. Cora’s suspension ended when the World Series did, and teams are now free to contact him. The Sox have interviewed Chicago Cubs third base coach Will Venable, Arizona Diamondbacks bench coach Luis Urueta, Pirates bench coach Don Kelly, Twins bench coach Mike Bell, Padres associate manager Skip Schumaker, and Marlins bench coach James Rowson. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman suggested that they could have interest in Dodgers first base coach George Lombard, a former Red Sox minor league instructor. Cora has a good rapport with the players in addition to Red Sox owners John Henry and Tom Werner as well as team president and CEO Sam Kennedy, who said last month that the managerial search will ultimately be Bloom’s decision.

This will start a 4-game set (in 3-nights) against the Mud Hens who come to town with the best record in the entire International League at 11-4. Tonight’s twinbill is the first of the season for Pawtucket. Please note…the PawSox will be the home team in Game 1 today while Toledo will act as the “home team” in the nightcap. Tonight’s doubleheader was necessitated by a rain out in Toledo just over a week ago (Sunday, April 15) in what was to be the finale of that 4-game series in Ohio. Double Your Pleasure – Pawtucket played in 11 doubleheaders last season which tied with Rochester and Syracuse for the most in the league in 2017. The Sox posted three sweeps, were swept five times, and also were involved in three doubleheader splits last year. Pawtucket was swept in their final twinbill of last season at Louisville on August 15 by 3-1 & 5-1 scores.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, June 6, 2018 * The Boston Globe Steven Wright in a word: ‘Outstanding’ Peter Abraham When Steven Wright walked out to the mound in the first inning at Fenway Park on Tuesday night, it was his first start in the majors in a little more than 13 months. But in his mind, it had been so much longer. Wright had not started a game with complete confidence in his abilities since Aug. 5, 2016, at Dodger Stadium. Wright threw a shutout that day, baffling the postseason-bound Dodgers with his knuckleball. Wright was selected to the All-Star team that season but didn’t get into the game. The performance against the Dodgers almost made up for it, he was that good. The satisfaction didn’t last even 48 hours. Wright was used as a pinch runner two days later and wrenched his right shoulder diving back into second base. Because of the injury, Wright started only two more games that season. When he reported for spring training in 2017, Wright’s shoulder had recovered, but he injured his left knee and made only five starts before undergoing season-ending surgery. The recovery lasted into this season and he was on the disabled list for the first month of the season. Wright then served a 15-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy for a December arrest. The Red Sox had long since filled their rotation and needed him only as a reliever. Wright pitched well and earned a chance to face the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
