PRESIDENT'S CORNER Hello Pasadena Rotary, Congrats once again to all the Dodger fans in our club. As a sports fan, I remember the many years and decades of waiting before my SF Giants finally won a Ring in 2010. I have loved playing sports, coaching sports and officiating sports, which I still do. As a league commissioner for AYSO soccer, I have seen and experienced the good, the bad and the ugly. It's interesting to see adults misbehaving badly, when it comes to their sideline behavior or coaching style. Being President of the Pasadena Rotary is a cakewalk! People's "true colors" come out when they are coaching their own children. For example, you have the parent who favors their child over all the rest of the kids on the team. You also have the exemplary parent who treats all the kids fairly and all the kids have an amazing experience. One of the key principles of youth sports is, "it's all about the kids," which is a subtle, but clear way of saying it's not about your kids only or your ego. People's egos, temperament and pride become very transparent in athletics. I especially value athletes who have a maturity and humility that transcends the game. I am extremely happy for Clayton Kershaw, although I willingly admit it would have been nice to see my Dodger friends wait another year for that Ring! Am always available to you at [email protected] and or to meet for a cup of coffee. In Your Service, Ken THE SCOOT ZONE By Justene Adamec, Bureau Chief President Ken Joe welcomes everyone! . After Ross Jutsum gave a Dodger Stadium organ flourish ending with Charge!, he led us in Take Me Out to the Ball Game and The Star Spangled Banner. Sandy Goodenough gave the inspiration, reading two quotes: Voting is the expression of our commitment to ourselves, one another, this country and this world. - Sharon Salzberg It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there'll be any fruit. -Mahatma Ghandi President Ken Joe announced the date for our Christmas Holiday Party will be on Friday evening, December 11, outside at the University Club parking lot and held jointly with the University Club. He also announced that last week, we raised $2600 for the Polio Pig. The poll asked who has gone to Dodger Stadium to watch the Dodgers play. 95% of respondents said yes. President Ken congratulates his Dodger fan friends for the World Series win and expressed his admiration for Clayton Kershaw. Speaking of the Dodgers, our speaker was Fred Claire, former Dodger Executive Vice President and general manager. We were delighted to have him speak the day after the Dodgers won the Series. Phil Hawkey, in his introduction said that the last time Fred spoke to us was after the 88 World Series win. Speaker Fred Claire Phil also told us that Fred had cancer which was successfully treated at City of Hope. Fred has now written a book called Extra Innings, the proceeds of which will go to the City of Hope. Fred said he is proud to know all 3 Dodger managers who have won the World Series: Walter Alston, Tommy LaSorda, and Dave Roberts. The Dodgers also have well put together teams including young, unknown players coming out of their farm system. He directed us to the principles set forth.in Good to Great that companies should follow: 1. Level 5 Leadership: Leaders who are humble, but driven to do what's best for the company. 2. First Who, Then What: Get the right people on the bus, then figure out where to go. Find the right people and try them out in different seats on the bus (different positions in the company). 3. Confront the Brutal Facts: The Stockdale paradox-Confront the brutal truth of the situation, yet at the same time, never give up hope. 4. Hedgehog Concept: Three overlapping circles: What lights your fire ("passion")? What could you be best in the world at ("best at")? What makes you money ("driving resource")? 5. Culture of Discipline: Rinsing the cottage cheese. 6. Technology Accelerators: Using technology to accelerate growth, within the three circles of the hedgehog concept. 7. The Flywheel: The additive effect of many small initiatives; they act on each other like compound interest. He shared examples about how the Dodgers followed those principles. Shifting gears, he spoke about his cancer and his recovery. In 2015, a small cancerous spot was removed from his lip. A year and a half later, he had pain in the left side of his jaw. The cancer had spread there. He had surgery to remove the tumor but in 2017, the cancer spread to his neck. At one time, that was incurable but new immunotherapy drugs eliminated the cancer. Finally, in 2019, he had an operation where they took bone from his femur to reconstruct his jaw. He began fundraising for the City of Hope and with the help of Dodger greats, he raised over a half million dollars. Finally, he wrote the book "Extra Innings" and all book sale proceeds go to City of Hope. He also spoke of Jackie Robinson, the first black player signed in Major League baseball. Jackie Robinson said he was proud of how the Dodgers stood up for him and stood by him. It was a long time after that when there were black men in management. Now Dave Roberts has won the World Series. Fred shared his favorite quote was by Jackie Robinson "A life is not important except on the impact it has on other lives" and how much this quote reflects what Rotarians believe." After breakout sessions, Fred stayed for Q&A moderated by Kat Rogers. COMMITTEE EVENTS & CALENDAR ROTARY READERS Monday - November 2nd at 6:00 pm via Zoom.
