All store cattle should be penned by 10am and selling will commence at 11.30am approx. Fatstock should be in the market well before 10am. The market will be open at 6.30am approx. Refreshments are available. CONDITIONS OF SALE All heifers are assumed to be clear of calf on the day of sale unless it is announced to the contrary. If (i) within 6 calendar months after the day of sale a heifer warranted as aforesaid proves to be in calf and (ii) within 6 calendar months and 5 days after the day of sale the purchaser gives written notice to the Auctioneers that such a heifer has proved to be in calf at the date of sale either (a) the vendor shall pay to the purchaser a sum equal to 25% of the purchase money to cover all losses or (b) the purchaser may return such heifer(s) and her calf (if any) to the vendor who will reimburse the purchaser with the full amount of the purchase price (purchaser to pay for return haulage). All steers are assumed to be properly castrated on the day of sale but if any have been imperfectly castrated and no announcement to this effect is made by the Auctioneers at the time of sale, then the purchaser shall be entitled to return such animal(s) upon the day of sale or within 14 + 5 days of the sale, but after removal of the animal from the sale yard a vets certificate must be produced stating that such animal(s) are imperfectly castrated (vendor to pay for the return haulage). Vendors are responsible for the correctness of all information relating to the identification of all animals. There are plenty of masts across Britain today, many of them built recently to provide mobile phone signals, but this is a radar mast dating back to the Second World War. Many of the structures hastily constructed to defend Britain during the war have since been lost, together with the stories that they told. This is especially true of the radar stations, so the mast at Stenigot is a remarkable survivor. So what did this mast do and why is it here? The radar system warned Britain of impending attack from German aircraft. The mast itself transmitted radar signals and the low concrete structures visible beyond the modern buildings housed the radar equipment. There were separate buildings for the transmission and receiving apparatus. A radio signal was sent out through the mast, it bounced off enemy aircraft and the time it took to return revealed how far away the planes were. This is why it is called ‘radar’ – RAdio Detection And Ranging. But why is the mast located here? Radar waves travel in straight lines, so they are limited by the natural curve of the Earth. As the Earth’s surface curves away from us the signals go off into space. Setting a radar transmitter in a high location increases its range, allowing the waves to travel a little further around the Earth.

The relationship between the development of iron sulfide and barite nodules in the Cenomanian Chalk of England and the presence of a red hematitic pigment has been investigated using sulfur isotopes. In southern England where red and pink chalks are absent, iron sulfide nodules are widespread. Two typical large iron sulfide nodules exhibit δ34S ranging from -48.6‰ at their core to -32.6‰ at their outer margins. In eastern England, where red and pink chalks occur in three main bands, there is an antipathetic relationship between the coloured chalks and the occur- rence of iron sulfide or barite nodules. Here iron sulfide, or its oxidised remnants, are restricted to two situations: (1) in association with hard grounds that developed originally in chalks that contained the hematite pigment or its postulated precursor FeOH3, or (2) in regional sulfidization zones that cut across the stratigraphy.

But by the tender age of 28 he had experienced more than many of us see in the whole of our lives. He was born during the First World War at Lansdowne, Spilsby Road, Horncastle, the fourth child of six and the eldest son. His father was an auctioneer and land agent and came from a family of factors or land agents who had started in Perthshire. His great grandfather, George Bell, had secured the post of resident land agent on the Revesby Estate in 1842 bringing his family to Lincolnshire. His quick open mind fostered an interest in a wide variety of subjects including, centrally, agriculture. It was his perseverance that kept Horncastle cattle market going (perhaps beyond its natural life).

The range of situations, and of emotions, to which we can be exposed is huge. These things help to form the richness of human living. But in themselves they can sometimes be immensely difficult to handle. Jesus’ promise was to be with his friends. Although they experienced the crushing sadness of his death, and the huge sense of betrayal that most of them felt in terms of their own abandonment of him, they also experienced the joy of his resurrection and the happiness of new times spent with him. They would naturally have understood that his promise to ‘be with them’ meant that he would not physically leave them. However, what Jesus meant when he said that they would not be left on their own was that the Holy Spirit would always be with them. It is the Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, that we celebrate during the month of May. Jesus is taken from us, body and all, but the Holy Spirit is poured out for us and on to us. The Feast of the Holy Spirit is Pentecost. It happens at the end of Eastertide, and thus marks the very last transition that began weeks before when, on Ash Wednesday, we entered the wilderness in preparation for Holy Week and Eastertide to come.
