East Africa Highlights: Kenya & Tanzania II 2016

Our July 2016 East Africa Highlights tour took us on our well-tried route from Gibb's Farm, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, and Tarangire in Tanzania to Nairobi, Lake Nakuru, Kakamega Forest, Baringo, and Mount Kenya in Kenya. Beginning our first day in Nairobi National Park, we drove across the grasslands, seeing our first Common Ostrich, Saddle-billed Stork, Gray Crowned- Crane, Blacksmith Lapwing, Rufous-naped Lark, Stout Cisticola, and Superb Starling, while the bush country held Dusky Turtle-Dove, Speckled and Blue-naped mousebirds, Long-tailed Fiscal and gorgeous male Variable Sunbirds. However, it was around the small lakes where we found the most species, with just a few of our highlights being Sacred and Hadada ibises, African Spoonbill, African Fish-Eagle, Black Crake, and Malachite Kingfisher. The mammal spectacle included Burchell's Zebra, Warthog, Hippo, Common Giraffe, African Buffalo, Hartebeest, Impala, and two distant Black Rhinos. We then flew to Tanzania and drove to Gibb's Farm, on the slopes of the Crater Highlands. A walk in the forest the following morning brought such varied species as a fabulously close Schalow's Turaco, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Black-throated Wattle-eye, Tropical Boubou, White-tailed Blue- Flycatcher, Brown-headed Apalis, Gray-capped Warbler, Collared Sunbird, and Thick-billed Seed-eater. -

South Africa Mega Birding III 5th to 27th October 2019 (23 days) Trip Report The near-endemic Gorgeous Bushshrike by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Tour leader: Daniel Keith Danckwerts Trip Report – RBT South Africa – Mega Birding III 2019 2 Tour Summary South Africa supports the highest number of endemic species of any African country and is therefore of obvious appeal to birders. This South Africa mega tour covered virtually the entire country in little over a month – amounting to an estimated 10 000km – and targeted every single endemic and near-endemic species! We were successful in finding virtually all of the targets and some of our highlights included a pair of mythical Hottentot Buttonquails, the critically endangered Rudd’s Lark, both Cape, and Drakensburg Rockjumpers, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Pink-throated Twinspot, Southern Tchagra, the scarce Knysna Woodpecker, both Northern and Southern Black Korhaans, and Bush Blackcap. We additionally enjoyed better-than-ever sightings of the tricky Barratt’s Warbler, aptly named Gorgeous Bushshrike, Crested Guineafowl, and Eastern Nicator to just name a few. Any trip to South Africa would be incomplete without mammals and our tally of 60 species included such difficult animals as the Aardvark, Aardwolf, Southern African Hedgehog, Bat-eared Fox, Smith’s Red Rock Hare and both Sable and Roan Antelopes. This really was a trip like no other! ____________________________________________________________________________________ Tour in Detail Our first full day of the tour began with a short walk through the gardens of our quaint guesthouse in Johannesburg. Here we enjoyed sightings of the delightful Red-headed Finch, small numbers of Southern Red Bishops including several males that were busy moulting into their summer breeding plumage, the near-endemic Karoo Thrush, Cape White-eye, Grey-headed Gull, Hadada Ibis, Southern Masked Weaver, Speckled Mousebird, African Palm Swift and the Laughing, Ring-necked and Red-eyed Doves. -

Scopus 34: 1–23, January 2015 Systematic and taxonomic issues concerning some East African bird species, notably those where treatment varies between authors Donald A. Turner and David J. Pearson Summary The taxonomy of various East African bird species is discussed. Fourteen of the non- passerines and forty-eight of the passerines listed in Britton (1980) are considered, with reference to treatments by various subsequent authors. Twenty-three species splits are recommended from the treatment in Britton (op. cit.), and one lump, the inclusion of Jackson’s Hornbill Tockus jacksoni as a race of T. deckeni. Introduction With a revision of Britton (1980) now nearing completion, this is the first of two pa- pers highlighting the complexities that surround some East African bird species. All appear in Britton in one form or another, but since that landmark publication our knowledge of East African birds has increased considerably, and with the advances in DNA sequencing, our understanding of avian systematics and taxonomy is con- tinually moving forward. A tidal wave of phylogenetic studies in the last decade has revolutionized our understanding of the higher-level relationships of birds. Taxa pre- viously regarded as quite distantly related have been brought together in new clas- sifications and some major groups have been split asunder (Knox 2014). As a result we are seeing the familiar order of families and species in field guides and checklists plunged into turmoil. The speed at which molecular papers are being published continues at an unprec- edented rate. We must remember, however, that while many molecular results may indicate a relationship, they do not necessarily prove one. -

Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Research, 72:293–301 Two hundred and seventy-three elephant shrews, consisting of 193 Elephantulus myurus, 67 Elephantulus edwardii and 13 animals belonging to other species, were examined for ixodid ticks at 18 localities in South Africa and Namibia. The immature stages of Ixodes rubicundus, Rhipicentor nuttalli, Rhipicephalus warburtoni and a Rhipicephalus pravus-like tick were the most numerous of the 18 tick species recovered. Substantial numbers of immature Rhipicephalus arnoldi, Rhipiceph- alus distinctus and Rhipicephalus exophthalmos were also collected from elephant shrews at par- ticular localities. Larvae of I. rubicundus were most numerous on E. myurus in Free State Province from April to July and nymphs from June to October. Larvae of R. nuttalli were most numerous on these animals dur- ing April, May, August and September, and nymphs in February and from April to August. The imma- ture stages of R. warburtoni were collected from E. myurus only in Free State Province, and larvae were generally most numerous from December to August and nymphs from April to October.
