PRESS RELEASE United Nations Secretary-General appoints the Japanese singer MISIA as Honorary Ambassador for the 2010 United Nations Biodiversity Conference Montreal, 1 March 2010. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed the Japanese female singer and songwriter, MISIA, as the Honorary Ambassador for the forthcoming tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which will be held from 18 to 29 October 2010 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. In her honorary role, MISIA will help raise awareness of the continuing depletion of biological resources and inform the public on the sustainable use of biodiversity. “In this International Year of Biodiversity, we must counter the perception that people are disconnected from our natural environment. We must increase understanding of the implications of losing biodiversity,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Referring to Honorary Ambassador MISIA, the Secretary-General said she could “help highlight our common struggles for protecting life on Earth and the actions we can take to slow down biodiversity loss.” Throughout her successful career, MISIA has been an advocate of sustainable development. Through her performances, she has worked to raise public awareness on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and, in 2008, she established a voluntary organization, Child AFRICA, to support education in Africa. This honorary appointment will help bring much needed attention to the importance of biodiversity and the urgent need for progress to meet the three objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). On learning of her appointment, MISIA said, “While travelling to different parts of the world, I have realized that our life and culture vary a lot and this diversity has been nurtured by the rich natural environments of different regions.

Malaysia launches e-visa to lure tourists from China Malaysian Insider March 1, 2016 Malaysia's visa programmes to further boost Chinese tourist arrivals, namely the electronic visa (e-visa) and electronic travel registration and information (Entri), were officially launched today by Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz. Also present was Malaysia's Ambassador to China, Datuk Zainuddin Yahya. Starting today until December 31, Chinese tourists can enter Malaysia without hassle as they can apply for visa online and print the e-visa on their own. Between midnight and noon, the Malaysian Visa Application Processing Centre in Beijing has received over 100 applicants. Nazri said the visa programme was the key initiative to help accomplish the government's goal of further expanding and developing the tourism industry of Malaysia and China, as well as strengthening diplomatic relations of both nations. "China has been among Malaysia's top 10 source markets and we deeply treasure the recognition and support from Chinese tourists. To show Malaysia's sincerity in welcoming tourists from China, we now promote e-visa to realise the goal of receiving eight million tourist arrivals from China annually," he said. Nazri said he received positive feedback from travel agents in China regarding Chinese tourist interest in Malaysia as the country was "very close" to their culture. "Chinese tourists are comfortable travelling to Malaysia as the Chinese community in Malaysia was not only able to speak Mandarin but also various dialects like Cantonese, Hokkien and Teochew," he noted. He said the ministry and its agencies had several tourism programmes in the pipeline to further boost Chinese tourist arrivals, in line with the implementation of e-visa programmes.

  • Living Bv the Music
Living bv the Music: Cohesive Influences in the Song Repertoire of French-American New Englanders by Deborah Waldman It has always been a traditional attitude among French-Canadian folk singers that "le bonheur vient en chantant" (happiness comes with singing). The fraternal cultural organization La Societe Richelieu expresses this social philos ophy in a similar way: "chanter, c'est fraterniser" (to sing is to be together in brotherhood). French-Canadian folk song represents an oral heritage which originally played a crucial role in the everyday life of the rural Quebecois. Social life in Quebec before World War II centered around the activities of the parish, family and neighbors. Communally shared musical gatherings, known as veiltees, were nearly universal, for public concerts and other entertainments were rare in a small village, if they occurred at all. The veiltee served both as a reunion for old friends and relatives, and as an opportunity for young people to survey and actively court potential mates. Held in the large kitchen of some farm house, the veillee included dancing, clogging, playing of fiddles, accordions and spoons, singing, eating and drinking. Some families had pianos, and an evening of family singing at home was a common and popular pastime for many of today's older French New Englanders who were raised in the villages and countryside of Quebec. Traditional French-Canadian music addresses interpersonal themes. The two most prevalent types of songs are in fact structured in performance to demand human interaction: the lively chanson a repondre features a leader who sings a few lines and is answered musically with a refrain sung by a group.
