City of New York DEPARTMENT of CORRECTION Job Posting Notice City of New York DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION Job Posting Notice Civil Service Title: Chaplain Level: None Title Code No: 54610 Salary: $47,496 - $54,620 Frequency: Annual Business Title: Chaplain Work Location: Ministerial Services Rikers, Island, East Elmhurst, New York 11370 Division/Work Unit: Ministerial Services Number of Positions: 3 Job ID: 292342 Hours/Shift: Day/Evening/ Weekday/Weekend Job Description The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is one of the largest municipal jail systems in the United States providing for the care, custody and control of persons accused of crimes or convicted and sentenced to one year or less of jail time. The DOC operates 12 inmate facilities, 9 of which are located on Riker’s Island. In addition, the department operates two hospital prison wards (Bellevue and Elmhurst hospitals) and court holding facilities in Criminal, Supreme, and Family Court in each borough. The Chaplains assigned to Ministerial Services will under direction conduct religious mandated and non-mandated services, provide spiritual and moral guidance, as well as interview and counsel inmates. Other duties will include but are not limited to the following: Instruct religious education classes Conducting individual and group counseling, religious education study groups Notify next of kin in cases of serious injury, illness or death of an inmate Assisting with the coordination of arrangements for inmates to attend the wake or funeral of an immediate family member Supervise religious volunteers Collaborating with other staff members in carrying out institutional programs, and performing related work Ensuring the religious services offered are in full compliance with all applicable laws, rules, directives, policies, protocols and standards. Minimum Qualification Requirements Ecclesiastical endorsement by the official endorsing agency of the candidate's faith which thereby encompasses all required educational and work experience necessary. BACKGROUND At the National Anglican Schools Conference held at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar in April 1997 the National Anglican Schools Consultative Committee was asked to conduct a survey on Religious Education and Chaplaincy in Anglican schools in Australia. The Survey was conducted on behalf of the Committee by Dr Peter Coman, Executive Director of the Anglican Schools Office in the Diocese of Brisbane in February 1998. An Interim Report was presented to the National Conference in May 1998. The Rev’d Dr Tom Wallace of the Anglican Schools Commission in Western Australia was asked to give consideration to ways in which the Report may be followed up and a small consultative committee, representative of all the States, was appointed to work with him. It was agreed that Dr Wallace would prepare a discussion paper on Chaplaincy in Anglican Schools, which would be considered initially by members of the representative committee with a view to wider circulation to Principals, Chaplains and Diocesan Bishops. That discussion paper was prepared and feedback on it was received from several Chaplains from three Australian States. As a result of the feedback the Paper was revised with a view to it being considered at a national gathering of Chaplains at the National Anglican Schools Conference in May 1999.
