Located between the mainland and Vancouver Island, Orcas is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the San Juan Islands.

Rural in nature, the ORCAS island features a variety ISLAND of lodging possibilities, from charming Bed & Breakfasts to Inns & Resorts. Shopping and activities on Orcas are nearly endless. Whether you’re looking for art galleries featuring Northwest artists or a hike in the 5200-acre , Orcas provides you with a variety of year- round activities.

The island – noted by locals as looking like an upside-down horseshoe – is geographically divided into several charming ‘hamlets.’

Orcas Village is the arrival point for the Washington State ferry. Here you’ll find gift shops, a grocery store, a post office, lodging, restaurants and outdoor activities. West Sound features a marina, lodging possibilities, and a community center. Deer Harbor is the farthest point West on Orcas, and offers full marina services, various lodging choices, a restaurant, and water activities. Eastsound is the town center on Orcas, and extends beyond the village core. Eastsound proper is largely a walking village, offering shops of all kinds, many accommodation choices, a variety of restaurants, and many family & visitor activities. To the Southwest is Crow Valley, home to lodging, a museum, and the golf course. West Beach is due west from Eastsound and offers shops, lodging, and YMCA Camp Orkila. Located just to the South and East of Eastsound is Rosario, where you’ll find many lodging choices, as well as the famed resort of the same name, a restaurant, a general store, a marina, and lots of activities, including the nearby Moran State Park. Olga & Doe Bay are small in size, but offer visitors many choices, including restaurants, lodging, arts & crafts galleries, and plenty of activities.

Getting to Orcas Island By Car & Ferry A leisurely ferry ride is the perfect transition to take you from the busy freeways of the mainland to the quiet country roads of the islands. (The ticket you purchase is for a round trip). Walk-on passengers are also welcome. By Plane Catch a small plane at various Northwest locations, including ’s SeaTac airport, Boeing Field, Lake Union, or Lake Washington, and be on Orcas Island in approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Regular and charter flights are also available from other regional airports. Take a shuttle bus from SeaTac right to the Anacortes ferry landing. By Boat There are several docking options for boaters, from day moorage to marinas. Important Ferry Information: Reservations are now available on to help make trip planning easier and more predictable. How do you save a spot? Go to www.takeaferry.com. There is no fee to make a reservation, however, you need a credit/debit card to reserve your spot. When you get to the tollbooth in Anacortes you will pay for your roundtrip fare. Reservations are highly recommended for travel to the islands and your return to Anacortes. If you need to travel at the last minute or can’t make a reservation for the day you’d like to travel, try traveling standby. While you may not always get on the sailing of your choice, there is often space available when people don’t show up for their reservations or when reservation holders end up traveling at a different time.

See current sailing schedule at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries To Washington State Ferry from Interstate 5: Take exit #230, drive west on Hwy. 20 to Anacortes (30 minutes). Turn right on Commercial Ave. and drive north, turn left at the light on 12th St. The ferry terminal is two miles ahead.

BIKING ON ORCAS ISLAND Orcas Island roads, with steep hills, blind curves, and sometimes little or no shoulder, are challenging for bike riders at every level of ability. Please use extreme caution when biking Orcas Island roadways. OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SIMPLE GUIDELINES: u After leaving the ferry, pull off the roadway until all ferry traffic has passed. u Travel single file in small groups of 3 or 4, widely spaced apart. u Stop only on straightaways and move completely off the road. u Use bicycle turnouts whenever possible. 4 A Glimpse at Our Ferrytale Life on Orcas Island by Edee Kulper • www.lifeonanorthwestisland.com Unless you own a plane, you get really familiar with traveling to and from Orcas Island on the ferry. Everything changes the moment you arrive at the ferry landing and wait to board. For visitors who are used to the fast life, it can be a challenge to stop and be. For others who are here precisely for the peace and quiet, it’s a joy to eschew busy-ness.

Once on the ferry, if you choose the warmth of the passenger deck above, the views are stunning. The 60- to 80-minute ride to Orcas is relaxing; people are friendly and one can chat the whole time or enjoy the solitude. Either way, it’s a perfect segue to life on the island.

Once here, the serenity and beauty take over your being. Summer beauty here is stunning –­ crystal clear skies, views of mountains and the sea through the forest, and breathtaking colors all around. Winter beauty incites reflective contemplation and inward creativity – windswept seas; sylvan scenes; and nature in the palettes of grays, browns, and dark greens.

9 ORCASORCAS ROCKS!ROCKS! A Brief Geological History By Sandi Friel T Williams Realty, SimplyOrcas.com Looking out from one of the stunning viewpoints atop Orcas Island’s Turtleback Mountain or , it’s easy to imagine that the evergreen archipelago spread out below you has existed as-is since time immemorial. Indeed, the rock you’re standing on may be more than 500 million years old! Far from being permanent, however, Orcas is part of a dynamic system that has changed in remarkable ways within the blink of an eye – geologically speaking. For one thing, back when dinosaurs stomped around the landscape, Turtleback Mountain was at the bottom of the sea. And it was in Mexico. Yes, Orcas was once south of the border where Baja lies today. In fact, all of the San Juan Islands are still slowly sailing through the cool waters of the , moving northeast at about an inch-and-a-half a year. Not too long ago, the island you’re visiting wasn’t even an island. Orcas was part of a larger land mass upon which very large – but now extinct – animals such as giant ground sloths, short-faced bears, mammoths, and herds of nine-foot-tall buffalo roamed. During the last ice age you could skate across Orcas Island, which was buried beneath a mile of ice! It was the advance and retreat of glaciers that ultimately shaped the dramatic setting you see today, smoothing and scarring the rocky highlands while excavating the deep channels that eventually filled with seawater and turned hilltops into islands. While the living earth’s grand forces rewarded Orcas by carrying it to this relatively dry spot in the rainshadow of the Olympics and carving its beautiful marine environment, the one thing they didn’t bestow on the island was an endless supply of fresh water. So, as we all enjoy the abundant sunshine of our Orcas summers, keep in mind that our unique geology and amazing climate also means we need to take care to conserve our precious water.

The following is a sampling of those buildings. Please respect the buildings, grounds, and businesses that may be in these historic treasures.

Orcas Hotel (Orcas Village) Victorian structure built by William Sutherland, a Canadian entrepreneur, in 1904. National Register of Historic Places.

Deer Harbor Community Club (Deer Harbor) Built as the Deer Harbor School in 1905, it is now a community gathering spot.

Crow Valley School Museum (near Eastsound) Built in 1888, and serving as the Crow Valley School until 1918, it now houses photos and artifacts. National Register of Historic Places

Outlook Inn (Eastsound) Previously housing a store, post office and barber shop, this 1888 structure took its present name in 1942.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Eastsound) Modeled after an English country church, this 1886 building was designed by Rev. Sidney Gray, the first rector. National Register of Historic Places.

Orcas Island Historical Museum (Eastsound) Six early settlers’ cabins (late 1800s) are featured on the Museum’s grounds. Originally from various parts of the island, each structure was reassembled at the site in 1956. See island artifacts; massive Heron sculpture.

Rosario Resort (near Eastsound) Built in 1906 by Robert Moran, who also served as Mayor of Seattle, the mansion’s teak and brass recall Moran’s ship-building expertise. National Register of Historic Places.

Observation Tower on Mt. Constitution (Moran State Park) Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (WPA) in 1936, of sandstone hauled from nearby , it is patterned after 12th Century watchtowers of southeastern Europe.

Artworks Building in Olga (Olga) Built in 1936 as a strawberry barreling planton land owned by local strawberry growers, it is now a cooperative art gallery and café. Washington Heritage Register of Historic Places.

Doe Bay Post Office (Doe Bay) Now part of an island resort, this 1908 building was part of a complete village port used for freight and passengers. National Register of Historic Places.

The natural beauty of the environment, abundant wildlife, and scattered state park island campsites provide a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the islands intimately from a kayak. The islands are also known for their sometimes challenging conditions, so it is important to consider your ability and options when planning your kayak journey in the San Juans.

There are several options for kayaking on Orcas Island, and it is important to consider these realistically. We have outfitters offering guided tours, and these are recommended for most visitors. Kayakers with training and practice in rescue techniques and paddling in currents may choose to bring their own kayaks. Instruction for all levels of kayakers is also available from several outfitters. If you plan on kayaking as a continuing sport, this is a great place to get the proper skills training. During part of the year, recreational kayaks are even available for rent on Moran State Park’s Cascade Lake.

As beautiful as the surrounding sea is, paddlers need to be aware of strong currents, cold water, and capricious winds as challenges in the islands. Wind and current can build up extremely rough waters in certain areas, which aren’t necessarily obvious looking at a chart or the terrain. Experienced island instructors and guides know how to avoid these hazards.

The wildlife available for viewing from a kayaker’s vantage point can be amazing. Whales, porpoises, otters, seals, sea lions, and many marine birds make the islands their home. Being aware of appropriate behavior around wildlife is important for all who paddle. Many animals are legally protected from harassment, and all should be approached with care and respect. Kayakers are in a unique position to enjoy – and impact – wildlife in the islands.

Although Orcas Island wasn’t named after killer whales (who are often called orcas because of their Latin name, Orcinus orca), it would have been a fine idea as we are lucky to have 3 types of orcas that frequent our waters.

People are most familiar with the fish-eating type or “resident” orcas. These whales are salmon eaters, preferring Chinook as shown in recent studies. In the San Juans we most commonly see resident whales from J, K, and L pods. These 85 or so animals make up what is called the Southern Resident Community. Once thought to number 200 animals, this population was recently listed as Endangered in the US and Canada. While people most often see them in large groups off of the west side of where they cooperatively hunt salmon returning to spawn, they also can be seen in President Channel on the west side of Orcas, off North Beach, or in off Orcas’ east side. Less commonly seen are resident whales from another community, the Northern Residents. These whales are more common north of the border, but they do make trips down into the San Juans. While the fish eaters hunt in large groups, the mammal-eating type

of killer whales, often referred to as “transients,” are usually seen in small groups of 3-5 animals. Because they hunt seals and other marine mammals, transient killer whales can be seen all around Orcas Island, especially in the late summer or early fall when there is a plethora of just-born fat, young and not-so-smart harbor seals.

Occasionally, we are lucky enough to see fish-eating killer whales that come into the San Juans from the open ocean. Like the resident killer whales, these “off-shore” orcas come in to eat salmon migrating back from the open ocean.

Orcas can be identified by the shape of their dorsal fin and white saddle patch and are individually known by name to experienced whale watchers. Don’t worry if you can’t tell what type of killer whale you see, some legends say that just seeing one is a gift. Get out to the beach and keep your eyes open for blows in the distance and don’t be disappointed if you don’t see an orca; there are plenty of other rewarding things to see on the beach.

Aside from a wide variety of sea food products — from the finest Spot Prawns and Oysters, to the freshest Salmon — we are also blessed with a number of small farms that produce farm fresh, organic meats, vegetables and dairy products. Many of our local restaurants are directly supplied by some of these farmers. There are not too many places left in the world where farmers and chefs have a direct one-on-one relationship like this. It’s a very intimate and mutually beneficial system. Farmers benefit by having a consistent market for their product. Chefs benefit by having access to the very best farm fresh products available to them. Farmers take pride in delivering their products to local establishments and often the chefs will include the farms names on their menus. It is truly a win-win situation. Patrons to the establishment also benefit by having great dining experiences that are unique to Orcas.

Chefs at home are also in luck. Orcas Island has a vibrant farmers’ market that runs from May through November. You will find a vast array of local farm products throughout the entire season. Some farms offer Community Supported Agriculture memberships (CSAs) where you can pre-purchase a share of the harvest. These types of relationships help farmers survive by being able to cover a portion of their seasonal operating costs. We all benefit by creating a direct relationship with farmers and also by strengthening our community by making a financial investment in a small local business.

Another way farmers contribute to the health and well being of their community is through the Farm to Cafeteria Program and the public school cafeteria. Fresh local organic items are delivered daily during the school year to feed our Island kids, and many farmers welcome classes to their farms to learn first-hand the art of good farming and healthy eating.

32 Our Natural Marine Environment by Jonathan White Author, Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean With 176 islands and reefs at high tide, and 743 at low tide, San Juan is the smallest of our state’s 39 counties. Despite its small size, the county has more than 408 miles of rocky and sandy waterfront, boasting more shoreline than any other county in the nation and home to about 20 percent of the shoreline in . The Island’s natural beauty and rich marine environment draw thousands of people from all over the world who come to relax, kayak, SCUBA dive, whale watch, beachcomb, fish, birdwatch, and sail. Hundreds more come each year to engage in marine studies at one of the many research organizations, including the SeaDoc Society, The Friends of the San Juans, the Marine Resource Committee, Beachwatchers, the Whale Museum, or the famous Labs.

These waters and shorelines are home to salmon (six species!), orca ‘killer’ whales, Dall’s porpoise, Stellar sea lions, river and sea otters, lingcod, 26 species of rockfish, and approximately 150 species of marine birds. Twenty- two varieties of endangered Puget Sound Chinook salmon use the San Juans in various life cycle stages. Visitors enjoy ready access to this unique marine environment, either on one’s own or with locally owned and operated guided tours.

Orcas Island’s economic and environmental prosperity is supported by, and compatible with, the protection and restoration of the marine ecosystem. In 2004 the waters surrounding these islands were formally designated a Marine Stewardship Area, which supports the preservation of our natural marine environment while allowing sustainable use by the tribes and other historic users, current and future residents, and visitors. The park has over 5,500 acres to explore by foot, bike, horse, boat or car. There are 38 miles of trails, 5 freshwater lakes, picnic areas, overnight camping, a vacation house rental and an overnight retreat center that holds up to 144 people. We have beautiful flora, fauna and water falls as well as scenic views from the trails and/or from the comfort of your vehicle. Cascade Lake has a swimming beach, a playground for the kids, and fishing for bass, trout or Kokanee (a land locked Salmon) stocked from our hatchery. Concessions provide quick snacks and rentals for kayaks, row boats and paddle boats.

For the history buffs and architect enthusiasts, we have over 20 historical buildings that were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and ‘40s. The stone tower at the top of Mt Constitution contains information about Robert Moran and the CCC. The views from the top are spectacular. Interpretive panels provide information about panoramic views from the summit.

The Gift Shop (May-Sept) has something for everyone. It is staffed by volunteers for Friends of Moran.

All proceeds to Friends of Moran benefit Moran State Park projects and educational outreach. FOM is a 501(c)3 organization. Moran is open year-round, but campsites fill up early in the summer, so call ahead to 888-CAMPOUT.
