Stephen Paget (1855 – 1926) was the founder of the Research Defence Society, a forerunner of Understanding Animal Research. He believed passionately that better science and understanding of physiology would lead to better medical treatments. After his death in 1926, he was greatly missed by his medical colleagues and the scientific community. The first Stephen Paget memorial lecture was given in 1927 to commemorate his life and allow leading bio-medical scientists of the day to talk about their research. The Openness Awards The Concordat on Openness launched in May 2014 and has to date brought together 109 organisations in a pledge to be more open and transparent about the use of animals in research. This year the Openness Awards celebrate five recipients that have met the Concordat commitments and encouraged the widespread sharing of best practice. Professor Sir Mark Walport, FRS, FMedSci Sir Mark is the Chief Scientific Adviser to HM Government and Head of the Government Office for Science. Previously, Sir Mark was Director of the Wellcome Trust. -

David has a particular interest in older consumers, adult vaccination, active ageing, financial services, and the role of technology in an ageing society. He has a strong knowledge of UK and global ageing society issues, from healthcare to pensions and from housing to transport. David has worked extensively on the issue of adult vaccination over the past eight years. He was a leading member of the SAATI coalition and is a board member of the Coalition for Life Course Immunisation. -
Research Council (MRC)
The Medical Research Council (MRC) The Medical Research Council (MRC) is a national organisation funded by the UK taxpayer. It promotes research into all areas of medical and related science, with the aims of maintaining and improving public health and of contributing to national wealth and quality of life.The research it supports and the scientists it trains meet the needs of the health services, the pharmaceutical and other health- related industries and the academic world. MRC has funded work, which has led to some of the most significant discoveries and achievements of 20th century medicine, for example the clinical use of penicillin – the first antibiotic –, deciphering the structure of DNA, and establishing the link between smoking and cancer. The MRC has three major MRC Institutes: the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR, Mill Hill, London); the Laboratory of Molecular Biology; (LMB, Cambridge), and the Clinical Sciences Centre (CSC, Hammersmith Hospital, London). In addition, there are 32 smaller MRC Units, an MRC Health Services Research Collaboration and three grant-funded Centres, most of which are attached to higher education institutions and hospitals throughout the UK.The MRC also has laboratories overseas, in The Gambia and Uganda.About half of the MRC’s expenditure of £345 million in 1999/2000 was invested in MRC establishments, where it employs its own research staff.The remaining half funded grant support and training awards to individuals and teams in universities and medical schools. In 1999/2000, the three main MRC Institutes; spent a total of £52 million between them, while spending on Units amounted to £72 million.
