2010 YEAR IN REVIEW

TEMPLE EARNS EIGHTH STRAIGHT ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT BERTH; FALLS IN SEMIFINALS With a 4-3 record in Atlantic 10 play, the Owls earned an eighth-straight berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament while Temple hosted on its home turf in 2010. The Owls played top-seeded Massachusetts in the semifinals, taking the Minutewomen into overtime before losing, 1-0. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Dalrymple made an impressive 10 saves in the game and was named to the All-Tournament Team along with juniors Becca Keener and Bridget Settles. Settles and sophomore Katie Briglia each earned A-10 First Team honors in 2010, while Keener was named to the A-10 Second Team and freshman Mandi Shearer earned A-10 Rookie Team honors. Settles led the Owls with 13 goals and five assists in 2010, with her 13 goals ranking fourth among all players in the Atlantic 10. Briglia tallied seven goals and two assists. TEAM NEW JERSEY WINS HPC FIELD HOCKEY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH HELP FROM TEMPLE Team New Jersey took the title at the USA Field Hockey Senior Women's National Championship in late May with help from three members of the Temple field hockey team along with head coach Amanda Janney. Katie Briglia, Sarah Dalrymple and Bridget Settles all represented the Owls as New Jersey defeated the South, 3-2 in overtime. New Jersey won its third title in a row at the championships, held this year at American University in Washington, D.C. Janney has been an assistant coach and administrator for the team in each of those three years, and Dalrymple was the starting goalkeeper both this year and last year. It was the first time on the team for both Briglia and Settles, who previously competed at the junior level. Katie Briglia and Bridget Settles SARAH DALRYMPLE AND BECCA KEENER HONORED AT BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS Graduated senior Sarah Dalrymple and rising senior Becca Keener both earned individual awards at Tem- ple University's annual Breakfast of Champions on April 27, 2011. The ninth annual event, held in the Liacouras Center, honors student-athletes for their success both on and off the field. Dalrymple and graduate student Dutch Gaitley (men's basketball) were named as the recipients of the En- terprise Spirit and Sportsmanship Award, given annually to student-athletes who have demonstrated a devo- tion to the essence of sport through their acts of sportsmanship. Keener along with Amara Kamara (football) were named the female and male recipients of the Temple Teammates Award, given to student-athletes who have demonstrated leadership qualities in the area of com- munity service, inspiring others to engage in similar selfless civic endeavors for the purpose of improving the quality of life for those in the local community. It was also announced at the Breakfast that 286 student-athletes were named to the Director's Honor Roll Sarah Dalrymple and Dutch Gaitley (3.0-3.49 cumulative grade point average) with an additional 47 student-athletes to the President's Honor Roll (3.50 or above). Field hockey's Katie Briglia, Kaylee Keener, Becca Keener, Caryn Lambright and Kylee Yetter all earned President's Honor Roll dis- tinction, while Tori Cox, Emily Fuertsch, Lauren Hunt, Taryn Nichols, Yvonna Osborne and Bridget Settles were named to the Director's Honor Roll.

FIELD HOCKEY HONORED AGAIN IN NCAA ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE PROGRAM RECOGNITION Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year academic performance rate (APR), and the Temple University field hockey team was one of those teams for a second straight year as announced by the NCAA on May 17. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commit- ment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APR's within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APR's in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. “We are very proud of the improved academic performance of all our teams,” said Temple Athletics Director Bill Bradshaw, “and in particu- lar the field hockey team for their exceptional performance yet again this year.” The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. “We are very grateful for this recognition of our team's academic success,” said head coach Amanda Janney. “This is a huge honor for our current players, our recent alumni, and also for our great academic advisors. Temple provides a tremendous amount of academic support for our student-athletes and we are thankful that each one of our players has graduated.” 2011 Temple Field Hockey Media Guide 24 Philly Proud.

TRIBUTE TO TEMPLE FIELD HOCKEY ALUMNI

GIVING BACK Temple Field Hockey is extremely grateful to some very generous alumni of the program who have con- tinued to stay involved with the Owls in a big way. Ann (McKernan) Robinson, pictured on the right, is a 1958 alum who contributed the single largest gift to Temple Athletics in 2007. Robinson and her husband, Armand I., pledged a total of $2 million to Temple including $1.1 million to the field hockey program. In 2010, Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth (‘98) and her husband, Greg, donated a brand-new state-of-the-art wire- less scoreboard for Geasey Field, the site of Temple Field Hockey and Lacrosse. Howarth played field hockey at Temple from 1993-97, and her 33 career goals rank eighth all-time in the history of the program.

It was the best experience for me being part of a family and that's what our team was- "a family." If one person was having a bad game, someone else stepped up. We had a lot of fun on our road trips and en- Cherifa and Greg Howarth pictured joyed spending time together on and off the field. The main reason we accomplished a lot was because we were not in- with their children in front of the dividuals. We were a TEAM. What I loved most about Temple is that you could be yourself and you weren't being judged. scoreboard they donated to Geasey GO OWLS. PLAY HARD EVERY GAME." Field. -Jane Catanzaro-Delaney '90

What I loved most about Temple was the diversity of people and activities that only a large metropolitan campus can offer. This allowed me a world class qual- ity education at (the Tyler campus) coupled with the opportunity to be a part of an exceptional Division I field hockey program. It was the best of both worlds, bar none! GO OWLS! -Mary Anne Morgan, TYL '65

"On and off the field I had the support of the coaching staff and teammates; we were a family. Although time has passed and some relationships have changed, I am forever grateful that I experienced college with the people I did. TUFH was a consistent aspect of my life that continually made me happy, was a safe place to express myself and pushed me to become a better person. My time at Temple and playing hockey, without a doubt, helped shape who I am today." -Haley Dervinis ‘04

“I experienced the best of everything at Temple. I received an excellent education that served me well for 37 years as a teacher and my field hockey years were very rewarding. I played for a Hall of Fame coach, Eleanor Pepper, who I admired and emulated. My teammates were supportive and driven to succeed against the top field hockey programs in the country at the time. I thoroughly enjoyed my years at Temple and I am proud to be a Temple Owl.” -Elvetta Gemski ‘72 (2011 National Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee)

“It’s hard to pick a favorite memory, because there are so many fun ones to choose from, but I would have to say that one of my favorite memories of TUFH was staying at the Conwell Inn during preseason. As a team we really bonded there and got to know the newcomers so well during our stay. It gave me a sense of unity with the team knowing that we all went back to the hotel to crash and reboot only to get up and do it all over again a few hours later.” -Mandi Ruth ‘10

“We played well and we were friends. We enjoyed all aspects of university life and getting to know about the great city of Philadelphia. Temple was such a friendly place with great academics. I had a sense of loyalty and I’m so grateful for a wonderful all around education and have such a love of Philadelphia. Your greatest success can come from your contributions in your own backyard. -Mary Ann Harris ‘61

“I can honestly say that I wish I knew then what I know now. As an alumni I understand what it means to be a Division I Field Hockey player. I understand now that it is not anyone that can be described as such. Temple University is my “house” and the TUFH team is my family. It just keeps growing every year!! I am very blessed!” -Cherifa Howarth ‘98 2011 Temple Field Hockey Media Guide 35 Philly Proud.

SAAASC Staff Services Academic advisors work closely with stu- dent athletes from the time they arrive at Temple through the completion of their academic careers. Through team, group, and individual meetings, these SAAASC staff members monitor academic and athletic eligibility and encourage students to strive for academic excellence and personal growth. All student athletes meet with the aca- demic advisors to discuss academic and athletic eligibility, changing/declaring a major, faculty is- sues and course selection. In addition to advising services, the follow- ing support services are provided by the SAAASC staff through regular individual and team meet- ings:

• Educate student athletes about Temple University resources, opportunities, and services • Assess transition from high school adjustment, academic progress, and overall academic, personal, and social well being • Monitor academic performance, including regular contact with faculty and reviewing progress reports • Assist with all academic matters, focusing on degree completion in four years • Develop plans to accomplish academic goals • Refer students to appropriate faculty, academic departments, campus resources, and advisors • Discuss team travel and academic responsibilities • Coordinate tutoring services when appro- priate

College academic advisors are equally as important as the athletic academic advisors. Often student athletes will need to obtain in- formation from both sources in order to best eval- uate degree progress and eligibility. Temple University is committed to providing student-athletes with the necessary support serv- ices to succeed. However, academic success is ultimately the responsibility of each student-ath- lete.
