It will, therefore, be necessary to obtain the understanding of people concerned in school on the need to maintain clean toilet facilities and to remove solids when the pits are full in view of the use of the newly constructed toilets for a long period of time. Even though the arrangement of the booths in a single row in one building is economical and easy to construct, separate buildings for boys and girls will be constructed under the Project when the number of booths exceeds eight. Considering the local customs, no urinals for boys will be installed. DREF operation n° MDRNG005 GLIDE n° FL-2007-000000-NGA Nigeria: Measles 13 December, 2007 The International Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross and Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of national societies to respond to disasters. CHF 153’000 (USD 134,692 or EUR 91,665) has been allocated from the Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the national society in delivering immediate assistance to some thousands of beneficiaries. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged. Summary: The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), through its health action teams, is intervening in the measles outbreak in Zaria Local Government Area in the northern part of Nigeria. The outbreak has claimed the lives of about 200 children in the past few days. To complement the efforts of the government in preventing the disease from spreading other areas, the Nigerian Red Cross Society is planning to train and retrain its team of health volunteers in the mobilization of the communities for immunization and in Map of Nigeria carrying out health education among the community people with the aim of reducing child mortality and morbidity. This operation is expected to be implemented over two months, and will therefore be completed by 11 February, 2008; a Final Report will be made available by 11 May 2008 (three months after the end of the operation). -

FLASH REPORT: POPULATION DISPLACEMENT DTM North Central Nigeria - Igabi LGA (Kaduna State) Nigeria 23 March 2021 OVERVIEW Nigeria's North Central and North West Zones are afflicted with a mul�dimensional crisis that is rooted in long-standing tensions between ethnic and religious groups and involves a�acks by criminal groups and banditry/hirabah (such as kidnapping and grand larceny along major highways). The crisis has accelerated during the past years because of the intensifica�on of a�acks and has resulted in widespread displacement across the region. Between 13 and 21 March, the fear of a�acks by bandits have led to a fresh wave of popula�on displacement. Following these events, a rapid assessment was conducted by DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field staff with the purpose of informing the humanitarian community and government partners, and enable targeted response. Flash reports u�lise direct observa�on and a broad network of key informants to gather representa�ve data and collect informa�on on the number, profile and immediate needs of affected popula�ons. The movement involved 1,010 Individuals in 202 households from Kwatan Jatau, kwatan Waziri, Guguwa and Angwan kan� villages in Ragasa Ward of Igabi LGA to LEA Primary school also located in Rigasa Ward of Igabi LGA in Kaduna State. Remarks by Dr. Paden: Author of Muslim Civic Culture and Conflict Resolution: The Challenge of Democratic Federalism in Nigeria. Let me welcome you all here this evening, and thank Brookings institution and the Saban Center for facilitating this book launch. In particular, let me thank Peter Singer and Rabab Fayad, who have worked tirelessly on the arrangements. I would also like to thank my Nigerian colleagues who have assisted in the launch, especially Ahmad Abubakar and Lawal Idris. I am especially honored by the participation of the panel here tonight. General Muhammadu Buhari has flown in from Nigeria to be our special guest of honor. As former head of state in Nigeria, and as major political challenger of the current administration in Abuja, he has shown that it is possible to use the judicial system to seek redress of election grievances. He has also shown that it is possible to accept the results of the Supreme Court decision last July, out of respect for the judicial system, while still remaining critical of the process of elections in Nigeria. His respect for the principles of the Fourth Republic, and his leadership of the peaceful opposition parties in Nigeria, make him one of the great statesmen of contemporary democratic systems. I am also grateful for the presence here tonight of Dr. Ibrahim Gambari, currently undersecretary general/ political of the United Nations, who has just returned from international travel and made a special point of coming down from New York for this occasion. He is one of my oldest friends in Nigeria, and a wise counselor to all who believe in a peaceful and democratic Nigeria. -

Department of Geography, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria Abstract This research is aimed at assessing the adaptive capacity of rural people to climate change in Kaduna State with particular reference to some selected communities in six Local Government Areas of the state. Data and information for this study were obtained from a direct field study based on the result of 426 questionnaires that were administered to household heads in the selected communities. Simple descriptive statistics was used to describe the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents. In this study, five indices (wealth, farm inputs, availability of infrastructures and institutions, irrigation potentials, and literacy level) influencing rural people adaptive capacity to climate change were selected; and a five point Likert scale was used to assess the adaptive capacity to the changing climate. The results revealed that rural communities’ people in Kajuru LGA had the highest adaptive capacity to the impacts of climate change. Moderate adaptive capacity was recorded among the rural people in Kagarko, Soba and Sanga LGAs; while a low adaptive capacity was recorded in Ikara and Kauru LGAs. -

Sustainable Energy for the Health Sector across Kaduna State Schneider Electric and EM-ONE collaborated to provide clean energy solutions for 34 Primary Health Clinics across 19 Local Government Areas in Kaduna State. Kaduna state, Northern Nigeria A partnership with EM-ONE Energy Solutions schneider-electric.com.ng Kaduna is a state in northern Nigeria and home to over 6 million people. It also has a booming economy offering Customer a vibrant lifestyle. With all these activities happening, Overview EM-ONE saw the need to improve the health centre conditions for its rural residents to enable the state EM-ONE has been providing innovative and sustainable power solutions to continue to grow. The project was funded by UK’s to the energy sector in Africa Department for International Development (DFID) for over 20 years. through the Solar Nigeria Programme, with the objective Utilizing its years of design expertise, to improve access to clean, affordable energy to poor industry knowledge and partnerships communities through electrification of public health with leading technology providers, EM-ONE makes lasting social impacts and education facilities. on underserved communities and emerging markets through the energy Energizing Primary Health Care Centres sector. Website: www.emone.ca EM-ONE undertook the site survey, engineering and design for 40 off-grid sites, as well as the project management for the construction and installation of the 34 sites from August 2016 to May 2017. The systems were deployed in 19 Local Government Areas (LGAs) including Chikun, Giwa, Igabi, Ikara, Jaba, Jemaa, Kachia, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Kagarko, Kajuru, Kaura, Kauru, Kubau, Kudan, Lere, Makarfi, Sabon Garo, Soba, Zangon Kataf and Zaria.
