  • Realism and Fantasy in Hindi Cinema
Excerpt • Temple University Press Introduction M ir r o r a n d L a m p n 2013 India celebrated a hundred years of cinema. During its century this cinema, and in particular Hindi-language popular cinema, arguably the Imost important of several cinema industries in the Subcontinent, has been both mirror and lamp—reflecting “Indianness” back to Indians at home and abroad, but also shaping Indianness. Movie-going in India is a special sort of pleasure—for many affording rare access to privacy, a sometimes three-hour- long respite from noise and heat in an air-conditioned, carpeted interior, where one can be alone with oneself among others, in the dark. This pleasure neces- sarily induces a different relation to interior, psychic space, without having to submit to sleep, even absenting the enjoying ego from the enjoyment: this is as close to accessing (unconscious) desire as most ever come, and could even be considered a kind of wild psychoanalysis. For many Indians without the means, it affords opportunities to travel (“transport”?), if only on the wings of fan- tasy: to alternative realities, foreign locales, alien cultures, unfamiliar aesthet- ics of self and unaccustomed social arrangements, pleasurable disorientations of everyday life. The “dream machine” is also a space-time travel machine— “motion” pictures move us to different zones, to unaccustomed emotions. Sitting in darkened cinema theaters in India, the spectator might also be struck by how often Indianness itself is what is being screened—in both senses. Hindi cinema has been, to change metaphors, a “dream machine,” producing images of collective or national identity that, with every iteration, prove more transitional, contradictory, and elusive or enable us to screen truths about our- selves from ourselves.

  • Chapter 1 Some Issues in Early Indian Film Culture 1.1 Evans' Report And
Chapter 1 Some issues in Early Indian Film Culture 1.1 Evans’ report and the early years of Indian cinema In 1921 on 3rd March W. Evans submitted a report entitled Cinema Publicity in India to Sir William Vincent, a government official in India. Evans begins the report by pointing out two requirements for publicity of cinema in India, in absence of which, the propagandists would misuse cinema which Evans terms as “most powerful weapon” (1). Evans states the requirements as: A. The extension of the industry which implies its release from the present improved facilities for bringing home the cinemas to the masses of the Indian population. B. Regulation of the programmes – a process which comprises on the one hand the negative aspect of barring out unsuitable, undesirable and useless films; and on the other, the positive aspect of supplying films of public interest, pleasure and utility. (1) While dealing with the section ‘A’ Evans states that the number of cinemas is very small for the huge population of India. Evans mentions some numbers in his report. According to Evan’s report in 1921 there were one hundred and seventy theatres in India (2). Both the sections A and B yield interesting facts about cinema in India. I would like to quote this report in some details here. Evans puts forth three reasons for his observation of theatres being not enough in India and they are as follows: First, practically, all the exhibitors are catering for the small European population who pay high prices for admission. The existing cinemas are generally out of date, and of small seating capacity.

On 28 December 1885 Indian National Congress (INC) was founded in the premises of Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit School at Bombay. It was presided over by W.C Banerjee and attended by 72 delegates. A.O Hume played an instrumental role in the foundation of INC with an aim to provide Safety Valve to the British Government. www.jagranjosh.com/general-knowledge Page 3 A.O Hume served as a first General Secretary of INC. Real Aim of Congress is to trained the Indian youth in political agitation and to organise or to create public opinion in the country. For this they use the method of annual session where they discuss the problem and passed the resolution. The first or early phase of Indian Nationalism is also termed as Moderate Phase (1885- 1905).Moderate leaders were W.C Banerjee, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, R.C Dutt, Ferozeshah Mehta, George Yule etc. Moderates have full faith in British Government and adopted PPP path i.e.
