RESTRICTED GENERAL AGREEMENT ON L/1298 TARIFFS AND TRADE 26 1960 LimitedSeptemberDistribution CONTRACTING PARTIES Original: English Seventeenth Session RENEGOTLATIONOF SCHEDULE XIII - NEW ZEALAND (Decision of 4 Tune 1960)1 Request for Extension of Period The following communication, dated 19 September 1960, has been received from the Delegation of NewZealand: "By this Decision of 4 June 1960 the CONTRACTING PARTIES suspended the application of the provisions of Article II of the generall Agreement to the extent necessary tc enable New; Zealand to apply, subject tc specified conditions, the new customs tariff simultaneously .with its submissionto the New Zealand Parliament. "The CONTRACTING PARTIES undertook to decide at the seventeenth session upon any additional period Subsequent to 31 December 1960 during which effect may be given to the new.. tariff pursuant to the waiverand during which the consequent renegotiations and consultations shall be comleted. "In outlining the reasons for the request (docmmleont L/1211) the NewZealand Government stated that the introduction of the new tariff would be carried out in two stages - the first stage this year and the second stage next year. The first stage was carried out this year in accordance with the terms of the Decision. "The second part of the operation will be introduced during the 1961 Parliamentary Session. Work is now proceeding on this stage but as stated. in document L/1211, the final draft will not be available until well into 1961 and there will not be sufficient ime to undertakenegotiations prior to its presentation to the New.Zealand Parliament. "It is necessary therefore, to request t:he extension of the period of the Decision to 31 December, 1961, and I should be pleased if you would arrange for this request to be included on the agenda for the seventeenth session."
