AUSTRALIAN NATIVE PLANTS SOCIETY AUSTRALIA HAKEA STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER No. 65 OCTOBER 2017 ISSN0727- 7008 Leader: Paul Kennedy 210 Aireys Street Elliminyt Vic. 3250 E mail [email protected] Tel. 03-52315569 Dear members. We have had a very cold winter and now as spring emerges the cold remains with very wet conditions. Oh how I long for some warm sunshine to brighten our day. However the Hakeas have stood up to the cold weather very well and many have now flowered. Rainfall in August was 30mm but in the first 6 days of September another 56mm was recorded making the soil very moist indeed. The rain kept falling in September with 150mm recorded. Fortunately my drainage work of spoon drains and deeper drains with slotted pipe with blue metal cover on top shed a lot of water straight into the Council drains. Most of the Hakeas like well drained conditions, so building up beds and getting rid of excess water will help in making them survive. The collection here now stands at 162 species out of a possible 169. Seed of some of the remaining species hopefully will arrive here before Christmas so that I can propagate them over summer. Wanderings. Barbara and I spent most of June and July in northern NSW and Queensland to escape the cold conditions down here. I did look around for Hakeas and visited some members’ gardens. Just to the east of Cann River I found Hakea decurrens ssp. physocarpa, Hakea ulicina and Hakea teretifolia ssp. hirsuta all growing on the edge of a swamp.

  • In Vitro Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Potential of Sterculia Urens Roxb
Shukla et al. Future Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2020) 6:45 Future Journal of https://doi.org/10.1186/s43094-020-00063-9 Pharmaceutical Sciences RESEARCH Open Access In vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of Sterculia urens Roxb. root extract and its bioactive phytoconstituents evaluation Anjali Shukla, Krishna Desai and Nainesh Modi* Abstract Background: The plant Sterculia urens Roxb. of Malvaceae family is comparatively understudied. Genus Sterculia is widely recognized by its phytomedicinal and ethnomedicinal attributes. The study is aimed to evaluate the qualitative analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thin layer chromatography (TLC), total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the crude hydro-methanolic extract of S. urens root. Results: The antioxidant activity, antimicrobial assay for clinical isolates, and TPC were measured by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity, agar well diffusion method, and Folin–Ciocalteu assay respectively. Hydro- methanolic extract confirmed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, saponins, steroids, and glycosides as primary and secondary metabolites, which was later confirmed by TLC. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed the presence of alkanes, alkenes, alkyl halides, halogen compounds, primary alcohol, tertiary alcohol, aldehyde, aromatic amine, secondary amines, amide group, and carboxylic acid. The crude extract was composed of a significant quantity of total phenolic content with 705 ± 0.40 mg GAE/g. Synergistically, the IC50 value of the crude extract and ascorbic acid was found to be 27.055 μg/ml and 37.244 μg/ml, respectively, which suggests that root extract possesses strong antioxidant properties. The majority of the microbial strains exhibited varying degrees of sensitivity to the root extract with a notable inhibitory effect against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, andPenicillium glaucum.

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. For more information please see: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/anhat/index.html Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. • Australian Native Plants for Use in Finch Aviaries
The Avicultural Society of New South Wales (ASNSW) (Founding in 1940 as the Parrot & African Lovebird Society of Australia) PO Box 248, Panania NSW 2213, Australia Australian Native Plants for use in Finch Aviaries (The Avicultural Review August 1986 Vol. 8 No. 8) The reason for restricting this article to native plants is simply that Australian finches show a marked preference for them, as evidenced by large numbers of red-browed and double-barred finches resident in the Canberra Botanic Gardens. These species rarely turn up in the suburbs where most of the plantings tend to be of exotics. As a planted aviary is, of necessity, outside and Australian birds make up a great majority of the finches that can be kept outside in Canberra, it would seem pointless to consider the exotic species of plants. The plants suggested have been selected primarily for the protection afforded the birds due to the dense foliage. Finches are by nature wary of wide open spaces and will appreciate being provided with the conditions that they have evolved to survive and breed in. Some of the plants are included because of their ability, when flowering, to produce an abundance of nectar which will entice insects in the cage - saving you much trouble when breeding time comes around. Although finches are seed eaters, at this time of the year, insects are a vital ingredient in the parent birds' diet in raising the young. It is suggested that species of plants are selected such that flowering coincides with the breeding season of your birds. Finally the list has been limited to plants reaching a height no greater than two metres and those species which have proved hardy in Canberra conditions.
