Diversity Micronesia – 23 species, Mariana Isl. – 10 species, CNMI - 9 species Ecological and human significance Short-horn grasshoppers are herbivores usually living in open grassy or weedy areas. Although they have been implicated in crop damage, such as maize, severe damage usually occurs only when there is a buildup of numbers, such as that occurring sometimes with the locust (Locusta migratoria). It is unlikely that any of the grasshoppers are indigenous to the Northern Mariana Islands as they are dwellers of open grassland or of, at least, low-cover, open areas. It is probable that most of the islands were mostly covered by forest prior to the advent and influence of man. It does seem that Stenocatantops splendens has recently entered the Northern Marianas, as , although it is now common on Saipan, there were no records prior to the recent (2000) collected material. It is a moderately sized animal and unlikely to be missed by collectors. Heteropternis obscurella seems, similarly, to have recently colonised the CNMI although its presence on Sarigan indicates a longer occupation period. Both species are in the University of Guam collection but were not recorded by Kevan et al 1997 from the Marianas. Conservation There are no conservation issues recognised at present, and none can really be determined until a thorough survey of the areas has been undertaken. All remaining natural habitats need to be conserved as much as possible. Identification There are no keys for in house identification, specimens have been sent (2002) to Dr. -

This Mariana Archipelago Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (MARAMP) cruise is part of NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) to conduct biennial coral reef ecosystem monitoring at each of the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands. ELDREDGE University of Guam Marine Laboratory, UOG Station, Mangilao, Guam 96913 Abstract- The shelled molluscan fauna of the Northern Marianas, a chain of volcanic islands in the tropical western Pacific, consists of at least 300 species. Of these, 18 are unknown from or are very rare in the biologically better known southern Marianas. These northern-restricted species are over-represented among limpets and in the middle to high intertidal zones of the northern Marianas. At least 22 gastropods which are common in the intertidal zone and on reef flats of the southern Marianas are absent in the northern Marianas. The northern Marianas lie within the presumed source area of the planktonically derived part of the Hawaiian marine fauna. The ocean barrier between the northern Marianas and the Hawaiian chain appears to select against archaeogastropods and against intertidal species but is unselective with respect to adult size and to other aspects of gastropod shell architecture. These findings are consistent with those for other dispersal barriers. Introduction The Mariana Islands form the southern part of an island chain which extends northward through the Bonin, Volcano, and lzu Islands to central Honshu, Japan. Whereas the marine biota of the southern Marianas (Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan) is becoming relatively well known, that of the northern Marianas (Fig. 1) is largely unstudied. -

Pagan Island, CNMI Volcanic Eruption Emergency Action Plan for Biological Survey Workers I. Introduction The "Marianas Expedition Wildlife Surveys 2010" (MEWS) is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) project funded by the Department of Defense – U.S. Marine Corps to gather information on fish and wildlife resources in the Mariana Islands, especially those species that are designated federally threatened or endangered. Micronesian megapode, Mariana fruit bat, and opportunistic seabird colony surveys will be conducted on nine islands (Anatahan, Sarigan, Guguan, Alamagan, Pagan, Agrihan, Asuncion, Maug and Uracas). Surveys on Pagan Island in addition to megapode, fruit bat and seabird colonies include reptiles, tree snails, insects, vegetation, and the near shore habitat including corals and marine fish. To facilitate these survey projects, temporary encampments will be established on five of the islands for logistical support. The primary base camp will be on Pagan Island (Figure 1) since it is centrally located and has an airplane landing strip. The base camp will be established on Pagan in May and maintained until early August. Fieldwork and data collection on Pagan will be conducted between May and July 2010 with peak activity in June and early July. Pagan has a small village area with 1 to 2 semi-permanent residents and minimal infrastructure. The camp on Pagan will consist of personal tents, a large, walled Army tent for cooking, portable 500-gallon fiberglass cisterns for water storage, ridge-hulled inflatable boats (RHIB), and small, portable toilets. The camp on Pagan will be staffed with a camp manager, a staff member from the CNMI Emergency Management Office (EMO), a single DOI MOCC trained boat operator for each ridge-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) and technicians familiar with Pagan to assist biologists.
