Season Summary: The 2011 season was filled with many questions. A new coach, 3 new faces and 4 returners left to fill some very big shoes from 2010. New England spring golf is challenging. Wet, cold and wind were common conditions throughout the entire season and keeping spirits up was difficult but credit is given to the 2011 team. They competed hard in every match, overcame adversity and injuries and kept their spirits up. Highlights of the season include the first win of the season versus Williston and a tie with Ethel Walker thanks in large part to freshman Tory Peterson coming back in both her matches on the last 2 holes, a sweep of Portsmouth Abbey at Taft with a jumbled lineup (missing players due to illness and injury) and a 4th place finish at the Founders league championship with 3 girls scoring in the 40s, of course playing in cold and rain. The 2011 was memorable and the seniors leave behind a positive legacy for the underclassmen to follow.

MVP: Samantha Nicolau Sammy was a 4 year varsity golfer. This year she held the #1 spot for the entire season and was captain. Sammy’s scoring average was 44 for 9 holes and capped off a solid season with a 20th place finish at the Pippy O’Connor New England golf championship scoring an 89. Sammy’s competitive spirit and love for golf will be referred to for years to come.

Coaches Award: Olivia Acuna Olivia was a 3 year member of the golf team. She was a team captain and played both the #2 and #3 positions throughout the season. Olivia was an enthusiastic member always keeping a positive attitude and striving to get better. Olivia’s shining moment was when she shot a 45 at the Founders league tournament, which was the team high, helping lead her team to a 4th place overall finish.

2011 SOFTBALL HONORS:

WNEPSGSBA ALL-STAR: Alex Stevenson WNEPSGSBA ALL LEAGUE HONORS: Rebecca Scanlon

The 2011 Softball season was – as they say – a “building year”. Despite the cliché , as those of us who have been through these seasons know, adversity does, indeed, build character and camaraderie. These players stuck together, lifted each other’s spirits when needed and cheered on their accomplishments. What we did, we did together with a shared sense of purpose. For the coaches, the most important part of the season was the never-give-up attitude that these players brought to every practice and every game. It would have been easy to get frustrated and to give up, yet each inning of the season saw our players go out to play their best; we applaud that Pelican spirit! Leading us through all of the ups and downs this season were our seniors; co-captain Claire Kokoska, co-captain Alex Stevenson, 3 year player Rebecca Scanlon and 2 year player Victoria Garbo. Garbo – as she is known to all – joined the team last year and was ever eager to put in extra time and energy to learn the position of . As a senior, her bat came alive as she many singles and doubles to move players around the bases. We will miss her presence and her love of softball!

Rebecca Scanlon has been a top-notch offensive player since her first Varsity game; she bunts and hits consistently well and her base running is unparalleled. Defensively, she grabbed just about every ball that came her way at 3rd and she can field a bunt incredibly well. As recognition of her many accomplishments, Rebecca earned a spot on the 2011 WNEPSGSBA All-League Softball Team. Congratulations!

Alex Stevenson wins the MVP award this season; her work ethic and intensity on the field set the bar for her teammates each and every day. Many opposing coaches this season remarked on Alex’s tough and gritty play at shortstop. Offensively, she was our lead off batter and consistently made things happen at the plate. Unsurprisingly, she was chosen as a Western New England All-Star this spring. Most important, however, was her connection to her teammates and her ability to get the most out of them. Congratulations, Alex.

Claire Kokoska earns our Coaches Award for her unwavering positive outlook and resilience on the mound. She worked hard this season to become a savvy and smart pitcher – able to read batters and change speeds accordingly. In addition, her wonderfully upbeat attitude and overall demeanor in practice and games was infectious and will be impossible to replace. Thank you, Claire, for holding this team together through thick and thin!

Each one of our players brought valuable gifts to the field everyday, but it was the blend of energy, desire, athleticism and enthusiasm that brought them together as a team. We learned a great deal this season and can’t wait to get back on onto the field in the spring of 2012 to keep improving our teamwork!

Lastly, thank you to Karolina, our manager, who make things smoothly on a daily basis and many thanks to assistant coach and former player Error! Contact not defined (Maggie Kennedy). who brought her love of sports, knowledge of softball and unstoppable enthusiasm to every practice and game. We also thank Bob Howe, Sue Billera, Joe Billera, Keith Armstrong, Glenn Buckley and Craig Lamenzo without whom things would never run as smoothly as they do!

GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS 2011

The girls tennis team had a good season. Although their W-L record was lower than hoped coming into the season (3-6), there were a lot of moments of incredibly good play, good sportsmanship and team bonding. The lineup this year was as follows:

Singles: #1. Maria Pylypiv ‘11 #2. Alexis Ditomassi ‘12 #3. Kaily Williams ‘11 #4. Annie Ferreira ‘13 Doubles: #1. Zoë Zachs (C) ‘11 Lucia Zampaglione ‘11 #2. Morgan Kille (C) ‘11 Melanie Silverman ‘12 #3. Amanda McParlane ‘13 Madeline Pariash ‘12 Alternates: Nell Pinkston ‘11 Jaclyn Davis ‘12 Rowan Rice ‘13 This season was defined in many ways by the weather and by the series of unlucky events that seemed to go against the girls at many turns. Against Hotchkiss, the winners of the Kent tournament and one of the stronger teams the Pelicans would face, the team had to play indoors, 8 game pro sets, and had to try and beat strong opponents in their first match of the season – a set of circumstances that led to a 6-1 loss. Against Taft, a 4-3 loss ensued, featuring Alexis Ditomassi in the battle of the season, playing 3 full sets (a 2 hr 55 minute match) and just getting eked out by a pusher in the third, losing the game and the match. A 7-0 win against Miss Porter’s raised spirits and kept the team going into a 5-2 win over Suffield. It seemed the girls were on a roll, but an unfortunate loss to K.O. set the girls back. Later in the year the girls beat Williston Northampton, but a late season injury led to placing 7th at the Kent tournament as well as two difficult losses against Westminster and Kent to end the year. However, the girls all came together and kept their spirits high, staying cheerful and sunny throughout even though the weather itself could not be bothered to do so. All in all it was an incredible term, with a great bunch of girls having a great time. Girls Varsity Tennis Brief Season Summary

The Girls Varsity Tennis team had a tough but successful season this year. The first two weeks of the season were spent sloughing off the rust accrued over the fall and winter terms, and getting everyone prepared to play a tough season of tennis. However, the weather worked against us, and a bunch of matches were canceled, shortened or abandoned partway through. This didn’t deter the girls in the least, and spirits remained high throughout the season. The team placed well in the Kent tournament despite entering only two flights out of three, and have really come together as a team to endure tough times and play good tennis throughout. Great work girls!

Most Improved: Amanda McParlane

Amanda had a solid start to the season, showing strong potential during tryouts and making it solidly onto the third doubles team. As the season progressed, it became clear that she was not only a good tennis player but making rapid strides in her mental game as well. Together with her doubles teammate Madeline, Amanda played some excellent matches where their team was overmatched to start with, and came back to strongly challenge their opponents. Against K.O., this doubles team lost to strong opponents in the first set 6-1, coming back to push the second set into a tiebreaker they barely lost 7-5. She followed this strong performance with a great win at #6 singles against Andover, one of only two singles wins that day. Her improvement bodes well for her performance on the team next year.

Sportsmanship Award: Melanie Silverman and Morgan Kille

As two veteran doubles players, Melanie and Morgan soon established themselves as a strong team with many victories throughout the year. However, it was not their play in which they stood out the most, but their decorum on and off the court. Morgan and Melanie both always strove to be cheerful, taking losses in stride and smiling throughout every match. They were always ready to cheer on their teammates, bringing fun and enjoyment to both practices and matches. Thank you girls!

GIRLS VARISITY LACROSSE 2011 12-3 Founders League Co-Champions Western New England Co-Champions #3 in New England

Many would think that a 12-3 season, Founder’s League Co-Champions, Third ranked team in New England according to LaxPower (behind Nobles and Middlesex) would suggest that we coasted through the spring. But coasting wouldn’t be the first word that comes to my mind. We definitely hit some bumps along the way. None of the bumps were insurmountable but they were bumps nonetheless-bumps with the weather and with a field that was underwater more than it was playable; bumps with the schedule where we opened our season less 5 starters including 2 captains; and bumps because we were the team with the target on our back. Every team wanted to beat us and every coach would say after the game that this was their team’s best game. When we played as a team, we were virtually unstoppable. Up 9-0 against Choate at halftime, up 10-0 against Taft at halftime, we quickly got a bit too complacent and Hotchkiss caught us on our heels and beat us by 1. It was the first Founders League loss in 4 years for the girls lacrosse team. It was good for the team in many ways and taught us that it’s going to take the entire team to win games and ball movement and team play would be of the utmost importance. And that would be the final loss of the season for a team that essentially rolled over the rest of their opponents. We scored 182 goals and gave up 88. Most games, we had more than 8 different players score goals and we had the luxury of having 2 strong goalies split every game.

I don’t think I’ve ever coached a group of more competitive kids. They competed in absolutely everything and anything they did. Add to the equation the fact that they all liked to be in charge and with only 5 new players added to our roster, this was a team that had an opinion on absolutely everything and anything. But, they were also an outstanding group of athletes. They played with passion, they played with grit and they played because they simply loved to play the game.

This was a team where it’s impossible to single out any one or two players for a coaches award. It was the collective efforts of every player that pulled this team together. To try and describe any one players contribution over another’s, would do a disservice to the manner in which this team succeeded.

Emily Fluke’s diehard enthusiasm and relentless work ethic, Laura McConney’s consistent goaltending and unflagging level headedness, Alexandra Crerend’s superlative stickwork, and unmatched game sense, Kathy Yannopolous’s tenacity and grit, Sarah Byrne’s remarkable resilience and her sheer lacrosse athleticism; Emily Riccio’s impeccable timing and her ability to read the offense; Mal Collin’s uncanny scoring ability and her perpetually positive attitude ; Maddie Gardner’s lightning speed and strong defensive instincts and Lindsay Macdonald’s virtually flawless defensive play all combined for a senior class where the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. This is a great group of seniors and it’s hard to imagine lacrosse at Loomis without them. We wish them all the best as they head off to their many, varied college lacrosse careers and we are excited to watch their next chapters unfold. And, we’re excited for the next generation of Loomis lacrosse players to unfold! Congratulations to New England All-Stars: Alexandra Crerend and Mallory Collins. BOYS VARSITY LACROSSE 2011

The 2011 Varsity Lacrosse team returned some key experienced offensive and defensive players from the 2010 squad. With the return of an experienced and talented offensive group of players which included, Tyler Goldmam, Teddy Black , Will DelaMater, Cal Paduda, Jake Gorman, and Dan Trompeter along with a returning game tested defensive core led by Morgan Lee, Nick Yannopolous, Freddie Pfund, Addison Wright and James Jurgens, the team had a positive outlook heading into the upcoming season and were looking forward to taking on the ever present daunting challenges of New England Prep school lacrosse competition. As in the past during spring break, the coaching staff took an aspiring and motivated group of Pelican lacrosse players for five days to Clearwater, Florida to practice and prepare for the upcoming New England season. Newcomers to Loomis Chaffee, Chris Cook (Attack), Nick Sterge (Attack), Chris Pauzer (Midfield), Jack Rowe (Midfield) and Benjie Colberg (Midfield) all demonstrated significant lacrosse prowess at their positions, and their addition to the team reinforced a positive spirit amongst the team members in terms of being a team to be reckoned with when the regular season unfolded in a few short weeks. Upon the team’s return to the Island to begin the spring season, the Loomis fields were inundated with flood waters, which forced the team to find dry locations indoors in order to practice. It was not the best case practice scenario, but the highly motivated Pelican squad brushed aside the daily weather disruptions and stayed focused to the task at hand as they prepared for their opening game to be played in Pawling, NY against a much improved Trinity Pawling squad. In an exciting back and forth contest where the lead changed hands 5 times, the Pelicans came back from three goals down with six minutes left as they scored the winning goal on a beautiful feed from Dan Trompeter to Teddy Black in an unsettled situation during the waning minutes of the game. Jack Rowe’s incredible success at the face-off position helped launched the 12-11 come back opening game victory for the boys from the Island. The satisfying hard earned victory gave the Pelicans a great deal of positive momentum heading into their next two games, both at home versus a tough Brunswick Bruin squad and the always competitive Hotchkiss Bearcats. The confident Brunswick squad featured a potent attack and an athletic midfield. Once again, face-off specialist, Jack Rowe dominated his position which helped to propel the Pelicans into a, 7-7 tie at the end of three periods. However, the Bruins held onto win a close, 9-7 game. Nevertheless, in this game, Attack men, Chris Cook and Tyler Goldman established themselves as an offensive dynamic duo as they tallied 9 points between them against an always tough Brunswick defensive unit. Despite the loss, the team looked forward with positive anticipation to hosting and avenging last season’s one goal loss to Hotchkiss Bearcats. On another day better for ducks than a lacrosse game, the two New England rivals battled back and forth in a driving rain for most of the game. Despite the horrible weather conditions, both teams made incredible individual and team plays on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. As the game progress into the fourth quarter it became a defensive battle and with just under 1:30 left in the game, Tyler Goldman scored his third goal of the game to put Pelicans ahead, 6-5. A well earned victory was in the making, however, an unfortunate unsportsmanlike penalty called against a Loomis player gave the Bearcats a man-up situation for the rest of the game and they took advantage of that gift by tying the game with 25 seconds left. The game went into over time, and the visiting team from Lakeville, Ct took advantage of their opportunity as they scored the winning goal 20 seconds into the sudden death stanza. Despite the heart breaking loss, their was little time for the Loomis team to go through an emotional hang over as they had two upcoming challenging road games confronting them versus two dangerous teams, the Berkshire Bears and the Kent Lions. These two games turned into 3 goal and 1 goal losses respectively despite the Pelicans best efforts to win the majority of the face- offs, they won most all of the ground balls, and they out shot both opponents by a wide margin. The disappointed Pelican squad now had a, 1-4 record with an average margin of loss of 2 goals per game. The Pelicans next challenge was to get back on the winning trail against the back to back nationally ranked Crimson Knights of Salisbury and the Big Green of Deerfield. The team knew that both Salisbury and Deerfield would pose the team’s toughest challenges at this point of the season. A confident and talented Salisbury team rolled into the Island, however, they squeaked by with a one goal victory in 2010 so they knew that the tough minded Pelican squad would give them all they could handle. Once again, the teams played another weekend game in the rain and once again the game was tied heading into the 4th quarter. The potent Salisbury offense could not muster many scoring opportunities against the well disciplined and determined Pelican defensive core. Goldman and Cook were once again dominating forces in the offensive end of the field and speedy midfielders, Will DelaMater, Cal Paduda, Benji Colberg, Dan Trompeter, Chris Pauzer, Jake Gorman, RJ Paige and Jared Roberts helped to control the explosive midfield units that the Knights possessed. Unfortunately, time ran out on the upset minded Pelican squad and their opponents from the woods of Western, Ct held onto a close, 10-7 victory. After the loss, it was important for the Pelican team to regroup emotionally as they had a mid week game at Deerfield. Captains, Cal Paduda and Tyler Goldman did a great job keeping the team focused in preparation for their upcoming battle with the highly acclaimed and undefeated Big Green team of Deerfield. The Big Green opened up a 2 goal lead at the end of the first quarter and it seemed like a big upset was possibly in the making early in the game for the visiting Pelicans. However, the fast transition play and unselfish play making ability of the Deerfield squad on that day was too much for the visitors from Ct. The Pelicans were now, 1-6 at the half way point of the season which was surprising because they continued to dominate in all facets of the game, however, the most important one, goal scored was turning the season into a mentally challenging experience for the players and the coaching staff. However, thanks to the leadership of the upper classmen on the team, the squad did not roll over heading into the second half of the season. Three out of the next 4 games were at home for the Pelican squad, which was a welcome relief for a frustrated team. The group showed its true grit and won two of those four games, posting victories against a talented Andover Big Blue squad and then they dominated the Williston Wildcats in a mid week match up. In both of those games, the offensive and defensive units for the Pelicans flexed their muscles and they finally put together two great team wins in a 6 day period. With four games remaining, Taft, Choate, NMH and AOF, the team had some renewed energy which they would need in order to win them all which was on the Pelican’s agenda. Unfortunately, reared its ugly head at Taft, as the Pelicans once again completely dominated the Rhinos; however, their 4th one goal Founder’s league game loss was a result of missed offensive opportunities through out the entire game. Their next game was also on the road, but his time it was to Choate to play the always-tough Wild Boars from Wallingford. This game began much like the Taft game, as the visiting Pelicans dominated their opponents early, but missed offensive opportunities left them trailing at the half, 5-2. With a new found energy level starting the 2nd half, the Pelicans tied the game up at, 6-6 with, 7 minutes remaining in the game. The Pelican defensive core had kept the game within winnable striking range by stifling the Choate offense for almost the entire 2nd half. Pelican face-off guru, Jack Rowe scored the winning goal on a beautifully executed unsettled play from the ensuing face-off. The Wild Boars had one more opportunity to tie the game up, but the Pelican team defense shut down the Boars last gasp to send the game into overtime with only seconds to play. The Pelicans had one more road trip remaining for the season and that game was next on the schedule versus the Hoggers of Northfield Mt. Herman. Both team’s offenses could not get in rhythm or generate many goal scoring opportunities during the first half, however, the Pelicans, led by Tyler Goldman, Chris Cook and Jack Rowe, did just enough on the offensive end so that the Pelicans could take a, 4-3 lead at the half. However, history was repeating itself once again as the Pelicans continued to dominate their opponents, but the game was still a one- goal margin as the lead changed hands 3 different times over the course of the 4th quarter. Left attack-man, Nick Sterge came through with a timely goal, which initially appeared to give the visiting Pelicans the extra momentum that they needed in order to finish the game with a win. However, the Hoggers fought back and thanks to an incredulous error by the game officials who had apparently not kept the time out records accurate during the 2nd half, the home team was awarded a third time out for the half which according to the rules should have resulted in NMH penalty instead of the ball possession that they had be given with 19 seconds. The Hoggers took advantage of the gift and scored the winning goal with 6 seconds to go much to the chagrin of the resilient Loomis Chaffee squad. The last game of the year was next on the schedule against traditional Founder’s league rivals, the Winged Beavers of at home on the Island. On a beautiful sunny afternoon, a huge fan base for both the home team Pelicans and the visiting team Winged Beavers showed up on the Island to witness one of the long- standing rivalries square off in the traditional last game of the season. The fans got their money’s worth as both teams played hard, fast, but not without error. A well –earned, 4-3 lead by the boys from AOF at half time did not deter the Pelicans from regrouping to take on the challenges of earning an upset win going into the last 24 minutes of the season. Both teams fought with vigor and reason and at the regulation the game was tied, 7-7. To be sure the next 4 minutes of sudden would be tense and encased with drama. The veteran Pelican defensive core held off the offensive attack of the Winged Beavers and with 2 minutes left in OT, sophomore sensation, George Fay, stripped the AOF ball handler, picked up the ground ball, raced down the field and made a beautiful pass to lefty attack-man, Nick Sterge (who in the first half, scored an incredible goal by retrieving his own rebound) who made a text book cross cage pass to the open Chris Cook who calmly tucked the ball off the goalies left shoulder into the net for the upset, 8-7 victory. A great season ending win for the never say die Pelicans. To look at the season in retrospect, it becomes much easier to understand the successes that this team had. Despite losing many close game battles, the team maintained a tremendous amount of resiliency and respect for one another. For those who gave us the great support at the games all season long, one can attest that these guys were passionate, hard working and competitive lacrosse players and never gave up no matter what the adverse circumstances might have been. It was reinforced to them all season long that playing a lacrosse game, like life in general is not a dress rehearsal and it was going to be important for the team to take advantage of the offensive and defensive momentary opportunities over the course of the season in order to be able achieve consistent success. In reflecting on the season, overall this group should be proud of the job that they done maintaining a positive team spirit despite the many frustrating close defeats. As the win over AOF indicated, everything evens out over time if you stay positive and cohesive when the adversity of the game rears its ugly head. As we begin to look forward to next season, we would like to thank the graduating players for their leadership, high caliber of play and their desire and determination to lead the team in a supportive and caring manner especially when things were not going our way. The future looks bright for the Loomis Chaffee varsity lacrosse team, a returning core of young players improved a great deal in all facets of the game during the season and they will be expected to earn bigger roles in the future. Those returning players now understand what it means to play in a close competitive game. Special thanks to Assistant Coach, Bill Ball for his continued outstanding coaching and mentoring efforts with the players. Lastly, our team managers, Charlotte Buchanan and Lauren Shaker should be recognized for all of their positive efforts and dedication towards the team’s success.

Head Coach: Ted Garber Asst. Coach: Bill Ball

Managers: Charlotte Buchanan Lauren Shaker Drew Pelletier BOYS LACROSSE 2011 AWARD WINNERS

Most Improved Player Will DeLamater The most improved award for this season goes to senior Will DeLamater. Will, a three-year varsity player, completely transformed his game this year. His diligence helped pay off this spring with much improved stick handling and a better shot on the run. Given Will’s athletic ability, it was only a matter of time before he became an offensive force from the midfield. However, his hard work and attention to detail over the summer is what helped him get to the next level. Will proved he could play with some of the best competition in NE. The coaches appreciate all of Will’s hard work and contributions over the past three years and wish him the best of luck at Trinity College next year.

Most Valuable Player Jack Rowe Anyone who watched a boys’ varsity lacrosse team this year noticed one thing: They won a lot of face-offs. This is contributed mostly to the play of standout Jack Rowe. The Duke University bound face-off specialist was one of the most dominant players at his position in all of New England. Jack won an amazing 80% of his face-offs this year. To put that in prospective, usually a percentage of 65% is very good. Jack’s tenacity and will to win helped lead Loomis to victory over Founders League rivals like Trinity-Pawling, where he was an incredible 23 of 24 at the X, and Choate where he had two key goals to go along with his dominant face-off play. Jack will be sorely missed next year, but the coaches wish him the best of luck in the ACC.

DON JOFFRAY & 3-SPORT FEMALE ATHLETE AWARD

Caleb Harris and Laura McConney

Caleb and Laura were elected by all varsity athletes in the school. You have chosen well. These two are well-rounded student athletes. Laura is a member of the cum Laude Society. If there were such a society for effort and commitment to the school Caleb would be at the top of the list. Laura plays , ice hockey ad lacrosse. Caleb played football, wrestling, and track. They were both captains of all their teams and will go on to play at the collegiate level next year. Laura will go to Middlebury and Caleb heads to Colby.

I grew up under the watchful eye of Don Joffray and I am certain he would be very proud to see both Caleb and Laura standing here today. These awards are about character, leadership, and accountability. You can’t be a high-level skilled athlete without first developing these attributes. I first congratulate your peers for their overwhelming support of you both for this award. And I congratulate the two of you for all that you have done to make our programs and your teams so successful. VARSITY BASEBALL 2011

This year’s varsity baseball team finished with just over a .500 record, going 8-7-1 on the season and landing squarely in the middle of the pack in the Colonial League standings at 6-6. How we got there was, to coin a phrase, a story of “the good, the bad and the ugly.”

First, the ugly. You can’t call this spring’s baseball weather anything but that. We had two games canceled because of the rain, had numerous games postponed to make up dates and spent almost as much time practicing in the hockey rink as our hockey teams did this winter. It was hard to get in a rhythm and pace our development. (I don’t know if the athletic department can do anything about the rain in future years, but it might be time to build those dugouts people have been talking about for several years now!)

Frankly, we also ran the bases in rather ugly ways at times, and that killed rallies or denied us runs that might have turned a few more games in our favor. The coaching staff takes responsibility for not doing a better job of instructing that part of the game, although our returning players have all been encouraged to do a lot of speed development between now and this spring in an effort to overcome the apparent lack of depth in that end of the gene pool among many of them.

Perhaps the only truly bad thing about our season was our struggle to stay away from the big inning on the part of our opponents. Defensive lapses and a couple of shaky moments by our pitchers saw them score 3, 4, 5 and even 7 runs in one inning in a number of our defeats.

The rest, as they say, was “all good.” Our defense tightened up. Our pitchers got even tougher. And our team chemistry, something that had been a positive off the field and in the locker room all year, started to shine through in the way we played on game days. That we won 5 of our last 7 games is proof of that, as is the fact that our season finale, a 3-2 extra inning loss, was as well pitched and as well played defensively as any game all spring.

The players on this team were good in many, many ways, too. We had a ton of multiple sport athletes, players who not only play baseball but everything from hockey to to football to soccer to . We have a promising group of younger players. Three sophomores and a junior played large roles in our last game of the season, and there is a good deal of talent among the other under-classmen on the roster, as well as an 11-1 JV squad.

And, we were fortunate to have a well rounded group of seniors. Three of them (Tom Crandall, Paul Richter, and Brandon Brito) were first year varsity players whose loyalty to the baseball program stands tall. Three others (Christian Smoolca, Mike DeLalio and Aaron Barrett) were key contributors to their third consecutive winning season at the varsity level. Two of them (Pete McAuliffe and Will Strabely) were newcomers to the team but fit in easily and added value quickly. Two more (Steve Michalek - a four year varsity veteran - and Dylan Pazulenic) had the best seasons of their careers. Together they made sure we “put our big boy pants on” and came away with a winning season.

The Founders certificate is not awarded every year but it is reserved for an athlete or athletes who demonstrate unprecedented accomplishments during the season, has an unselfish dedication to the team and is someone who the coaches feel is an essential aspect of the team’s philosophy and goals. This year the Girls Track and Field team acknowledges the contributions of a few members: The 3000m core: Captains Sarah Patrick and Lydia Heinrichs who ran endless miles and practice for endless hours while never forgetting their goals as student athletes. They NEVER gave up, and when the team needed them most they achieved essential points for a successful season. We wish them the very best next year; for Sarah at Georgetown University and for Lydia at Williams College.

The 4x 100m team: Junior Natalie Brown, Freshmen Nana Minder, Junior Kelsey Adamson and Senior Kendra Waters broke the school record previously set in 1984 at the Founders Championship this year and then again at Interschols, the New England Championships where they ran an impressive 50.26 seconds FAT. Kelsey Adamson did not stop there. She went on to break the school record set in 1980 in the 100m dash at this year’s Founders as well, with a new time of 12.6 seconds FAT.

AWARD WINNERS:

Girls Track MVP: Caroline Moran Coaches' Award: Shondaray Ducheine Coaches' Award: Lindsay Gabow Coaches' Award: Kendra Waters

The MVP Award is presented to the athlete who in the opinion of the coaches embodies the values, which we hope all our athletes would follow, and who has greatly contributed to the success of the season based on the her total points earned for the team. To compete at the highest level in one of the 17 events is great but to master 3 by your junior year is something to admire. This year, that distinction goes to Junior Caroline Moran. All season, well actually since her freshman year, Callie has been a coach’s dream: attentive, hard working, and willing to do anything, at times under the toughest of circumstances. This season Callie came in hoping to improve, but not really fully understanding her abilities. She trained with the sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers and competed in as many as 4 events: long jump, jump, 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles throughout the season. Despite not being a quote “captain” she demonstrated that you need not have a title to and lead a squad, as her hurdling crew would gladly say. This season she earned an impressive 77 points, was third at Founders in the Long Jump, 100h & 300h and at Interschols was 5th in the Triple Jump and 100h and finished 2nd in the 300h with a season PR of 47.67 seconds. Congratulations Caroline Moran.

The Coaches Award is one of the most important awards we can bestow upon an athlete. It is given to the athlete who went above and beyond the expectations set before them. This year, we would like to honor three young ladies; all of which infused the team with new life and willingness to do anything for it. They gave of themselves wholeheartedly and always had the best interest of the TEAM in mind. This selflessness is rare in a sport where the individual is always the centerpiece. When asked to run another race or do another event they were at the ready, even if it meant, for one of them, to sore 8’6” in the air land, race across the field so that she could high jump 4’ 10” then race to the adjacent field and throw the discus over 60 feet, and that was only on one race day. The other two, did not flinch either. One was always at the ready even when asked to do an impossible triple, the 1500, 800 and 4x400. Sometimes, the hardest conversation was explaining why she could not do the 3000m run as well; and our third candidate, who has run practically everything in two years. She started with the 100m and 200m, ran the 400m, learned both hurdles, ran legs of the 4x 400m relay while mastering the anchor position in the 4x 100m relay where her confidence, steadfast leadership, sheer determination and hard work ended in cementing her teammates names as holders of a new school record. An impressive task given that she really is not a true 100m sprinter. These girls never questioned the coaches but instead reveled in the challenges set before them. It is rare to see this determination, but we were lucky to have three young ladies that helped keep the pulse of the team. This year’s Coaches awards go to Junior Lindsay Gabow, Senior, Captain, Shondaray Duchaine and Senior, Captain, Kendra Waters. We wish them both the best next year as they embark on new ventures; for Ray Ray, as she is fondly known, good luck at Villanova University and for Kendra all the best at Wellesley College.

Thank you ladies, for your unending commitment to the Loomis Chaffee Track and Field program.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD 2011

Record: 7-1 Founders League Champions Third place in New England Division I

Every year, the boys track and field team is reinvented, taking on the personality of the senior leaders. This year, that meant a full dose of intensity (Caleb), laughter (James), optimism (Ting), versatility (Ryan), talent (LaDarius), experience (Sherman), focus (Kang), potential (Erik), knowledge (Fish), fun (Mac), dedication (Gillie) and experimentation (Nacho). What a great mixture.

With 22 returning varsity letter winners, the boys track and field team had reason to be excited about potential. However, we didn’t know that we’d also pick up a couple of new sprinters who would be lights-out good; that our juniors would develop so quickly in the hurdles, mid-distance and jumps; and that our already-experienced seniors would reach impressive new levels.

We excelled in the dual meet season, losing just one close meet and sweeping all the others. That continues the streak of more than four decades since Loomis had a losing record in track and field. At the Founders Championships, we repeated as victors, and now, as the Founders Championship meet hits the decade mark since its inception, we have won 5 of the 10 championship meets. At the New England Championships, we finished third, bringing home a plaque for the third year in a row, and the sixth year in the last nine.

We enjoyed a deep and talented team, one that somehow was able to focus even with 80 guys on the team. And, we had several amazing individual accomplishments:

Christian Bermel ’12 joined the select few high school athletes who have run under 2 minutes in the half mile as an underclassmen. He also teamed with Austin King ’12, John Abraham ’12 and Ryan Palm ’11 to run the fastest 4x400 relay in my 13 years at Loomis.

Spencer Congero ’12 achieved the rare feat of scoring more points at the New England Championships than at the Founders League, upping his performance in that bigger meet. Josh Ryu ‘12, for the second straight year, excelled at the New England’s, placing 5th in the high jump by clearing a personal best of 5’ 10”. Ian Knapp ’12 scored in both hurdle races in both championship meets, finishing third in the league in the 110 high hurdles as a high point. Darren Ting ’11 pr-ed and placed 4th in a packed pole vault finals at the New England’s. Caleb Harris ’11 scored improved five feet in the shot put this year, scoring in the New England’s in both that event and the discus.

Ryan Palm ’11 scored the most points of any athlete at the Founders Championships, winning the 800 and 1500, finishing second in the 3000, and being on the winning 4x400 relay team. At the New England’s, he won the 800 in 1:56.44. Only one athlete in Loomis history had run the 800 faster, and that alum went on to be a three-time Division I All America selection. Not bad company.

John Abraham ’12 and LaDarius Drew ’11 formed a sprinting duo that I doubt has ever been seen in New England prep school track and field. As teammates, the were never beaten this year in the 100 or 200, except by one another. They traded off wins, John winning the 100 in the league meet and the 200 at New England’s, LaDarius winning the 200 at the league meet, and the 100 at New England’s. They even shared school records. While both broke the existing records in the 100 and 200, they finished the year with John as the 100 meter record holder, LaDarius as the 200 meter record holder. John’s 100 also set the Founders League Championship record.

But, perhaps perspective would help describe their dominance: in the league and New England championships, opposing sprinters from Taft, Andover, Hotchkiss, and Choate chose to do other events like the jumps, the hurdles and the 400 meters to avoid racing in the 100 or 200 against John and LaDarius. The week we held our New England Championships, the collegiate ECAC’s were held in . In that meet, with more than 60 Division III colleges represented, John and LaDarius both would have placed in the top 5 in both the 100 and 200.

Finally, John and LaDarius were the core of a truly dominant 4x100 team, paring with Nacho Otero ’11 and Cory Morgan ’12. That sprint relay team finished the year undefeated, and the time they ran at New England’s 43.38, would have placed them second in the NESCAC championships held the week before. In other words, the Loomis boys 4x100 team would have beaten the best relays from Amherst, Middlebury, Hamilton, Tufts, Williams, Bowdoin, Bates, Trinity, Wesleyan, College. Not bad. Not bad at all.

2010 Boys Track and Field Award Winners:

MVP’s: Ryan Palm ’11: As captain and as the most versatile and most fleet-footed of all the distance runners, Ryan closed his Loomis running career with a pair of most memorable weekends: at the Founders League Championships, he competed in the 1500, the 800, the 3000, and the 4 x 400, taking first in all but the 3000, where he aimed for and took second; at the New England Championships, he competed in the 1500, the 800, and the 4 x 400, racing to personal best times in all three events, and garnering a dramatic come-from-behind, sprint-to-the-line, photo-finish for first place in the 800. At both championship meets, the coaches asked Ryan to take on more events than he might have liked, in order to tally more points for his team, and without complaint, Ryan put Loomis Track and Field ahead of personal goals.

John Abraham ’12: LaDarius Drew ’11:

And, in the week we held our New England Championships, the collegiate ECAC’s were held in Pennsylvania. In that meet, with more than 60 Division III colleges represented, John and LaDarius both would have placed in the top 5 in both the 100 and 200.

And that's only what they did on race days. During the training week, they were near-perfect examples of how one should prepare for competition. LaDarius and John’s quiet, humble and fiercely competitive natures make them great teammates and training partners who win with class and lose with grace. They were both genuinely supportive of each other while deeply wanting to beat each other…not because they wanted to beat up on one another, but because they just didn’t like to lose.

Coach’s Awards:

Caleb Harris ’11: Always passionate, always focused, but this year also always open to dedicating himself to events other than his dominant work in the shot put, Caleb Harris was an inspirational captain for us. He started running the 100 meters this spring, clocking 11.7 seconds and just destroying the Taft anchor in the 4x100 “Clydesdale” race. And Caleb began to master the discus, scoring in that event at the New England Championships. Of course, he was great in his specialty, the shot put, placing third in the league and forth in New England, and anchoring our throwing team all year.

James Yun ’11: In some ways, James represents a whole faction of guys on the team, athletes who dedicate themselves in every workout and who make teammates better by pushing them. His throwing coaches all agreed that when James partnered with captain Caleb Harris, Caleb’s lifting sessions were much more intense. Yet James is not just one of the dedicated masses. Along with that focus in workouts, James brought an infectious attitude of humor and fun to our team for the last three years. We thank him for that mature ability to work when practices demanded focus, but to help us remember that life should be fun.

Loomis Varsity Boys Tennis had an excellent season, compiling an impressive 10-1 regular season record. The team placed second in the Southern New England Tournament, second in the Founders League, and finished in the top four in the Class A Division of the New England Tournament. One of my proudest moments of this year’s squad was how, after losing to Taft on a Saturday afternoon (in a very close, four-hour contest despite the score), The Pelicans came roaring back on a Monday night to take down Deerfield, 4-3. The focus and passion that the Pelicans played with was incredible, which carried them through the rest of the season. My second favorite moment of the season came in the New England tournament. We beat Exeter, 4- 0, in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semis where we took on Andover, the #1 seed and the lone undefeated team in our division. Despite losing, 4-3, in truly an epic battle, the Pelicans played with incredible heart, focus, and sheer determination. They fought to the end, and they left everything they had on the court. Many people Remember the Titans. But, Andover will remember the Pelicans and will remember this match for a long time to come. Along with our heart, we left a mark on those courts.

Award Winners:

Matt Rollings: This year, Matt played #2 singles and #1 doubles with partner, John Megas and was a huge contributing factor to the success of this year’s team. Many coaches came up to me repeatedly this season and asked, “He is only a freshman?” Yes, indeed, Matt is a freshman who raised many heads as they watched him perform. Even more important than his impressive tennis skills, Matt understands and embraces good sportsmanship. On a tennis court, he stays focused and worries only about the task at hand. For Matt’s incredible love of tennis, his hard work and promising, ever-developing tennis skills, and the way in which he conducts himself on a tennis court, Matt Rollings has earned this year’s Coach Award.

Fred Fang: A two-year varsity and impact player, Fred has made significant contributions to Loomis Varsity Tennis. Fred started out on JV but moved his way up the ranks to varsity last year. This year, he served as Co-Captain, played at the #3 singles position, and the #2 doubles position with partner, Christian Keenum. Among Fred’s many accomplishments this year, he secured the fourth point for us against Deerfield, which was beyond huge. The final point consisted of an ace. For those of you who have ever tried to serve in near darkness, you know that this is not an easy feat, never mind the fact that there was a little pressure on Fred with this particular point. For his hard work, focus, and leadership, Fred Fang has earned this year’s Coach Award.

John Megas: A four-year varsity and impact player, John has made incredible contributions to Loomis Varsity Tennis over his tennis career on the Island. Serving as Co-Captain this year and playing at #1 singles and at #1 doubles, he compiled an impressive singles and doubles record leading the Pelican Charge. He faced some incredibly strong competition but lead our team convincingly. John will do anything for the team. He loves tennis and has improved significantly over his four years on varsity. For his playing ability, hard work, his leadership, and for his love and devotion to all things LC Tennis, John Megas has earned this year’s Coach Award.

GIRLS VARSITY WATER POLO 2011

The season began with the entire 2010 team returning in anticipation of a great season. The team began the spring with a pre-season training trip to Annapolis and the United States Naval Academy, where we trained for 5 days with the local club team and were able to visit the sights of Baltimore and Washington, DC. During this time the team progressed well, jumping right into drills and scrimmages throughout the week. At the end of the trip the team was treated to a nice dinner by the Navy Aquatics team and returned to campus ready for the challenges of the season ahead.

With the extra work and training under their belt, the Pelicans were entered in the Greenwich Aquatics tournament where Loomis was able to compete against some great competition from around the Northeast. The girls began a bit rough with 2 losses, but ended the tournament with 3 consecutive wins, winning the consolation bracket. A long weekend, but well worth the time and effort that the girls put forth. The team has long since had the mentality of being willing to play anyone, anytime, in order to gain good competition.

The girls proceeded to make their way through the regular season with some great wins against both club teams from Pittsburgh, Greenwich Aquatics, Navy Aquatics, and Greenwich HS and the other teams in the league. The Pelicans had a great showing at the Choate Tournament, finishing second with a tough OT loss to GHS. Throughout the season, the Loomis defense was solid and the team worked to develop its potent offense, making a strong transition in the pool from defense to offense with a speedy counterattack. With separate win streaks of 11 wins and 9 wins, the Pelicans were tough to beat. Greenwich HS gave us some great competition through the season, playing them 3 times, with three very close matches. Heading into the tournament, the team was pumped and seeded number one, having gone undefeated in league play.

The Final Four tournament was held this year at Wesleyan University, a more central location than in the past. In the first round game, Loomis had no trouble with the #4 seeded Deerfield, and rolled to a 16-0 win. This set up the anticipated championship game with the Wild Boars of Choate. In the first-place game, it was another epic match, worthy of two strong teams. At the end of the first quarter, Choate held a slim 1-0 lead, and from then on it was tied 2-2 at the half and 4-4 at the end of the third quarter. Neither team could muster much offense due to the great defense being played. In the fourth quarter, Choate scored on a penalty shot and Loomis could not find the back of the net. Unfortunately, while Loomis was the better team all season, on that particular day Choate got the better of the Mighty Pelicans, who were hurt by their 4 for 23 shooting (17%), after shooting almost 50% all season. It was a tough loss for the Pelicans, to be sure. At the Final 4 tournament, senior CeCe Coffey and junior Kelsey Millward were selected to the All-Tournament team.

Although the Pelicans fell short of their goal, the girls worked hard all season. The team was led by senior captains, CeCe Coffey, Erin Cohn, Dana Hubbard, and Rebekah Lohnes. All four girls were four year members of the team and their experience and leadership will certainly be missed next year. The returning athletes have learned quite a lot from their elders about winning and what it takes to be a Pelican!

This team has a lot to be proud of. Not only was their play exceptional and they competed very well against some great regional talent, but the girls developed as individuals and as a team. The improvement the novice players made was incredible and a credit to those around them. The team encountered some obstacles along the way but played through them and made the best of some tough situations. Next year there is no doubt that the returning players have the skills to make another run at the title. The Mighty Pelicans will most certainly be back! Great job to all. You’ve come so far in a short period of time and this coach is very proud of each of you and all you’ve meant to Loomis Chaffee water polo!

MOST IMPROVED: Rebekah Lohnes ‘11

In four years as a goalie and in her second year as a starter, Bekka has established herself as one of the best goalies in the league and among the best in Loomis Chaffee history. Third in LC all- time saves, and finishing the year with a 64% save percentage, Bekka gave the defense in front of her the confidence needed for them to make the transition from defense to offense. As Bekka began to “own” the crease in front of the goal, her confidence grew and it showed in her play. Great job, Bekka! Thanks for an awesome season and a great Loomis career!

COACHES AWARD: CeCe Coffey ‘11

A two-time polo captain, CeCe is intense, hard-working and loves the game of water polo. CeCe approaches practice each day with the goal of leaving at the end of practice a better player than when she showed up that afternoon. Her basic skills of passing, catching, and shooting have vastly improved over the four years and she has handled well the nuances of solid team defense. In CeCe’s four years at Loomis, the team has won 75% of their games and her play is a good reason for our success. Thanks CeCe for all your efforts and dedication to water polo and our program over the past four years. Best of luck to you next year as a Princeton Tiger!

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Kelsey Millward ‘12

Kelsey is a stud. Every team knew that to beat Loomis, they had to shut down #9. Few teams could. Kelsey established school records this year of goals in a season (112), career goals (241), career attempts, and career steals. With one year to go, Kelsey has not played her best water polo. She works hard in all aspects of the game. She has improved her off-hand and had at least 10 goals this year with her left hand. She is tough, determined, and fearless. Kelsey swam this year to improve her polo and it showed. One of the very best ever at Loomis, Kelsey was selected All-New England for the second time but in my mind, she was the best player in the league. She is Loomis’ MVP!

The Pelican Award: Given to that senior member of the swimming and water polo teams whose hard work, positive attitude, and dedication has inspired success in her teammates.

Erin Cohn ‘11

I have had the good fortune to coach Erin for 8 seasons. She has heard all my speeches, all my philosophies of life, all my stories, and all my bad jokes. But despite this, Erin came to practice each and every day in the winter and spring ready to give her best effort to Loomis Chaffee Aquatics, working hard and doing whatever she could to make herself and her teammates better. A two-time captain in polo and a captain in swimming, Erin provided the leadership and stability necessary for teams to be successful. In the polo tank, Erin had the tough job of guarding the opposing team’s best player and she did so as well as anyone to play here. We will certainly miss her next year as she heads off to Wesleyan but I am glad that she is close by to come and visit.
