combined protected species report.docx Executive Summary enims Ltd was commissioned to carry out protected species surveys at Church Lane, Stowmarket, which is located off OS Grid Reference TM 05256 57052, located at Combs Fords, to the south-east of Stowmarket, Suffolk. This follows a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal by Wild Frontier Ecology (2017) of the site, which confirmed the potential for great crested newt, breeding birds, bats, water vole, and reptiles to be present on the site. enims Ltd subsequently found the potential for otter and dormouse to be present in the surrounding area. These species are protected under national and European conservation legislation, as well as planning policy. It was therefore necessary to perform further survey work, in order to establish if these species were present on-site and population sizes where possible. From the data gathered it is concluded that great crested newts were present in the on-site pond and surrounding waterbodies, and likely moving between Church Meadows Nature Reserve, the on-site pond and Combs Woods SSSI via hedgerows and planted arable field. A breeding bird survey assessment conducted by enims Ltd during June 2018 found low breeding bird population densities over the site. Significant species included four red data list species and two amber list species. The red data list species present were skylark, song thrush, starling and house sparrow. Moderate levels of bat activity were present to the field margins. Bat species recorded were in general common and widespread species with pipistrelle species dominating the site. Low numbers of Leisler’s and brown long-eared bats which were found infrequently over the site. The ditches and streams surrounding the site were dried up during the 2018 survey for water vole and otter. Despite some suitable habitat identified off-site, the surveys showed no evidence of either species being present, therefore they were likely absent from the site and wider surrounds. Juvenile grass snakes were observed during two different surveys under refugia located at the field access to Church Meadows and at the boundary with the triangular unmanaged grassland area located to the north-west of the site. An adult grass snake was seen during the great crested newt surveys at Church Meadows, a low breeding population is present and utilising the site for foraging and commuting. A dormouse survey assessment was carried out by enims Ltd in 2018, in the site boundary hedgerows and the western extent of
